IFPO Photographer Chosen to Shoot Book Cover

People want to know if they can trust you. Thats

the key. If they cant trust you, it doesnt matter
what your skill sets are. Keith Cephus

I have been truly blessed in so many ways. I fell in love with photography in the late 80s and love it more every day. I joined IFPO on
January 15, 1989 and ordered the guide, How to Get Your Work
Published. From that I learned that you must have good quality,
interesting photos and the tenacity to go after the publishers who use
what you shoot. I learned quickly not to waste time trying to convince publishers to use my work if it was outside the focus of their
readership. It also became apparent that you must have access to
events to get many of the photos that publishers need. So I applied

for Olympic Gold Medalist

Olympic Gold Medal Gymnast Gabrielle
Douglas chose IFPO member Keith
Cephus of Virginia Beach, Virginia as the
exclusive photographer for her book
Raising the Bar.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - When

Olympic Gold Medal Gymnast
Gabrielle Douglas needed a photo
spread for her latest book, she turned
to a photographer based in her hometown for the job. IFPO photographer
Keith Cephus was selected as the
exclusive photographer for her book
Raising the Bar. Cephus photos are
featured on the front and back covers
and throughout the book.
When Cephus saw Douglas make
history at the 2012 London Summer
Olympics, he quickly drummed up an
idea to congratulate the two-time gold
medalist and add her to his portfolio.
As he watched history unfold, he sent
a Facebook message to Douglas. On
behalf of Keith Cephus Photography,
I would like to give you a complimentary photo shoot to let you know how
much we appreciate you in Hampton
Roads, Virginia, he said.
A little more than one year later,
Cephus portfolio includes more than
6,000 photos of Douglas. He has captured some of her most prized
moments since the Olympics, including the moment when she received a
congressional award in Richmond,
Virginia. He also photographed the
ceremony when Virginia Beach gave
Douglas the key to the city. Cephus
www.ifpo.net

remains amazed
by his newfound relationship with Douglas and her
team -- especially since she
never saw his Facebook offer! It was
God. It was a blessing, because when
I made the offer, I didnt know the
opportunity would really come,
Cephus said. It turned out to be the
opportunity of a lifetime.
The chance to add Douglas to his
portfolio actually started with her
mother, Natalie Hawkins. When
Hawkins was nominated for an award,
NBA Referee Tony Brothers called
Cephus to photograph the event. By
the end of the photo shoot, Hawkins
was impressed enough with Cephus
and his team to put her daughters
photo needs in his hands. After
building a great relationship with
Natalie, she trusted me with Gabby;
therefore, she gave me the opportunity
to do a photo shoot with her daughter,
so it was truly a blessing and an honor
to be a part of the documentary of
Gabbys life, Cephus said. He didnt
simply capture Douglas the gymnast.
He was also able to capture the glamorous side of Douglas for the book.

Cephus credits his national and

international success to not only his
talent, but his tenacity, strong work
ethic, and willingness to build strong
relationships with his clients. People
want to know if they can trust you.
Thats the key. If they cant trust you,
it doesnt matter what your skill sets
are, Cephus said.
A retired Navy Chief Petty Officer,
Cephus fell in love with photography
during his first tour of duty in Japan.
He joined IFPO on January 15, 1989
and has been active since day one. He
often offers workshops and plans to
sponsor a photography camp for
underprivileged children. He also
speaks to groups in the community
about photography and business. The
New York native also serves on the
Academic Review Board for the Art
Institute of Virginia Beach and is a
member of Wedding and Portrait Photographers International and Professional Photographers of America in
addition to IFPO.

How To Make A Good Im-PRESS-ion

By Henry Smith IFPO, Warwick, New York

YOUNG KELLY CLARKSON IN CONCERT AT

BETHEL WOODS (WOODSTOCK)
HENRY SMITH

I had shot my first press event

twelve years earlier in college. The
college just had a new Observatory
built and there was an official Dedication Ceremony complete with college
officials and local politicians including
guest of honor keynote speaker, the
(then) Mayor of New York, Edward
Koch! Since I was on the yearbook
t has been 24 years since I was staff, I had access to this event and
first introduced to the Interna- others. But after college, there were
tional Freelance Photographers literally no organizations that would
Organization, Todays Photographer offer press credentials, unless I
Magazine and American Image Press enrolled in a traditional degree bearing
in 1990. The third component, IFPOs Photojournalism Program.
Press Program, is what got me hooked.
Being a Natural and Social Science
I distinctly remember flipping through (Biology, Psychology) major and
the pages of the magazine to find a wanting to work in science education,
double-page ad with the following I had no desire to enroll in such (phowords that seemed to reach out to the tographer/reporter) programs to obtain
very core of the type of photography press credentials.
that I was so keenly interested in:
It stood to reason, that since I
PRESS CREDENTIALS THAT already had a strong background in my

favorite hobby of photography,
without having to endure an arduous photojournalism curriculum, I
should enroll in a program that
offers immediate use of its press
credentials. So, when I saw that
Todays Photographer Magazine
promised PRESS CREDENTIALS
THAT REALLY WORK my initial reaction was it sounded too
good to be true, but then I thought
I am DEFINITELY willing to try
this Press Program! So I read the
ad, several times, then I cut out the
mail-in application and submitted
them for simultaneous membership in IFPO and its Press Credentials Program.
About two weeks later I
received a large, thick, tan envelope. Inside, were two cardstock
sheets with IFPO IDs and Press
IDs, badge clips, laminate sleeves,
BRET GARDNER OF THE NY YANKEES SWINGS AND
assembly instructions, order forms,

and an accreditation letter from

Vonda Blackburn, Editor in Chief! I

quickly perused the letters, set them
aside, and went straight for the
instructions on how to assemble my
new press pass. In no time I had a
wearable press credential.
By todays standards, my first press
pass didnt look all that impressive
after all, it was only a small credit card
sized ID with simple black text on a
plain white background and a small
passport style photo of myself. It was
around Thanksgiving, so I figured I
would try this Press Pass That Really
Works on a tough barrier a police
line at the Macys Thanksgiving Day
Parade in New York City.

H ENRY S MITH

Armed with my professional Minolta film camera and lens, I nervously,

and excitedly showed my American

THE AMERICAS CUP 2013 UP CLOSE

BY RICHARD B. RESSMAN, M.D., IFPO, CUPERTINO, CA

Covering the 2013 Americas Cup Races in San Francisco was one of the most spectacular sports events Ive covered. Down eight races to one, The American Team
came back to win the next eight races and the Americas Cup in dramatic fashion.
Richard B. Ressman, M. D. IFPO
JIMMY SPITHILL, THE AMERICAN SKIPPER

During the 2013 Americas Cup

Races in San Francisco last summer,
after being down eight races to one in
the best of seventeen (nine races to
win), the American Team of Larry
Ellisons Oracle AC 72 made some
modifications in the housing for the

hydrofoil and won the next eight races

in dramatic fashion. During one of the
last races, Team New Zealands Emirates AC 72 was approaching the finish line to capture the Cup; however,
time ran out and the crew did not finish in the allotted forty minute maximum. The New Zealand team never
got any closer.
Jimmy Spithill, the American skipper, did a magnificent job in getting
his boat to hydrofoil sooner than the
New Zealand boat in nearly every
race; his technique at the starts was
most admirable. Dean Barker, the New
Zealand skipper, seemed to be devastated after losing the final race. One
had to share tears with him.
Only three challengers, Artemis
Racing (Sweden), Emirates Team New

Zealand,
and Luna
Rossa Challenge (Italy) competed in
the 2013 Louis Vuitton Challenge to
win the right to challenge the defending American team, Oracle in the
Americas Cup Races. Emirates Team
New Zealand won.
The cost of a challenge was prohibitive for most potential teams. Estimates to fund a challenge exceed half
a billion dollars, and each boat costs
about eight million dollars to build;
crews and support teams also require
housing and meals for months. Rent in
San Francisco in not inexpensive.
As usual, my AI News Service Press

editorial staff, provided the access to
this preeminent sports event.

USPRESSCORPS.ORG

ASSOCIATION OF VOLLEYBALL PROFESSIONALS

experience achievement reliability prestigious

By Frank and Brenda Lamica IFPO

St. Petersburg, FL

AVP KICK OFF 2014 SEASON

Every year IFPO tries to launch at least one major program based on what we've
learned from experience and requests from IFPO member photographers working in the
field. The new USPRESSCORPS.ORG Press Program is the latest expansion of IFPO
press programs which were originally launched in 1984. We encouraged and received a
tremendous amount of feedback in the past year which was the basis for the format of
the new USPRESSCORPS.ORG Press Program.
The recurring theme seemed to be that many venues around
the world now require press photographers to show more than
one press card. To meet those requirements and other considerations, IFPO expanded the press programs to include a new, elite
US Press Corps program which issues a Press Hard Card -- coveted by most press photographers. USPRESSCORPS.ORG will be permanently limited to
only 1500 experienced IFPO press photographers.
The new USPRESSCORPS.ORG Press Credentials serve 3 purposes:
1)

Press hard cards are now issued by most respected media organization and are
expected at most major venues. The photo hard card symbolizes the highest
level of credentials and presents a positive image for the serious press photographer.

2)

Many venues, especially for professional sports, are now asking for at least
two press cards in order to be considered for access to the event. The hard card
is expected to elevate the prestige of the photographer and will certainly epitomize the preeminence of the issuing organization.

3)

Press hard cards with the photo placed in the manufacturing process are the
most recognized cards for serious photographers. They cannot be duplicated
effectively and, therefore, command respect whenever presented. IFPO now
has the technology to turn almost any photo into a professional head shot for
the production process.

The USPRESSCORPS.ORG program is specifically designed to enhance the stature

of IFPO press photographers and to meet the expectations of press officials and law
enforcement internationally. In the near future only press hard cards will be recognized
at most venues.
Qualified IFPO photographers have been notified of their status and invited to join
USPRESSCORPS.ORG. If you have not been notified and believe you qualify, contact
IFPO customer service at 336-468-1138 or email homeoffice@ainewsservice.net.
Fact-based, well-documented, unbiased press coverage may be more important today
than almost any time in history. With major newspapers folding monthly and others cutting publishing schedules there is soon going to be vacuum to be filled. Also, the mainstream media is either left or right leaning and true journalism seems to be in jeopardy.
Since 1984 IFPO Press photographers have covered some of the most high profile
events in the world including the Inauguration of Presidents Barack Obama and George
W. Bush, the Chinese Protest March in Tiananmen Square in 1989, the 1995 bombing of
the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and the 9/11 Terrorist Attack of the
World Trade Center in New York in 2001. Thousands of sports and entertainment events
and hundreds of other lesser events are covered everyday in the most populated cities of
the world as well as the most remote regions by IFPO press photographers.
The mission of the USPRESSCORPS.ORG is to create a core of 1500 top notch press
photographers to provide comprehensive coverage that is factual and in context directly
to major news outlets for distribution. For more information contact IFPO at 336-4681138 or email homeoffice@ainewsservice.net

An IFPO Exclusive Interview with Bernard

(Buddy) Bregman - Space Engineer
... to get what you want, you just need to ask and be persistent.
You may not encounter a Buddy Bregman but in every community
there are interesting people with stories to tell.
By Jim D. Fermo, Ph.D, IFPO

Once a month several men friends and I meet and take the subway
to different parts of the Los Angeles area and have lunch and do city
tours. Last month Bernard (Buddy) Bregman happened to join the
group as a newcomer. I began inquiring about his profession. When he started talking, I was just
floored by his experiences.
I explained IFPO and my wonderful years as a member and asked if I could have a private interview
with him. He said, I'll do one better. He invited me and my grandson to the Science Center in Los
Angles. Since I was a member of the IFPO Press, Buddy asked the Director if he could bring us in for a
private tour and pictures before the crowds arrived. The Director approved.
The next thing I knew we had an appointment at the California Science Center prior to it being
open to the public, and a personal interview with Bernard "Buddy" Bregman. There was so much
knowledge exchanged that I could have written a book filled with his exciting life's stories and pictures
from the center. The interview concluded two days later when I was invited to his home. In his private
office I shot his portrait and viewed the many awards of his accomplishments, pictures of astronauts
and rocket displays along with other space memorabilia he had gathered over the many years.
I though this article was important to share with other members of IFPO for two main reasons.
First, to get what you want, you just need to ask and be persistent. Just as in Buddy's case your
dreams can be your reality. Second, over the years my IFPO credentials when presented have gained
admission to a great variety of venues both here and abroad.
I am a firm supporter of IFPO and believe that an organization that provides so much support to
photographers and the advancement of our craft deserves the ultimate support from its members.
Although I have several press credentials, I really use only one when I travel.
Warmest Regards to Vonda Blackburn and the entire team at IFPO. Keep up the great work.
Jim D. Fermo, Ph.D.
P.S. I really enjoy the actual magazine immensely.
neer are too numerous to mention in
one article. His lifes dreams have
been fulfilled and his goals successfully accomplished. Few if any know of
Bernard Bregman as his merits have
been achieved with a quiet humility in
the space program.
One of Buddys exciting projects
was his work on the proposal for astronaut interaction and cargo payload
integration. His area of expertise for
the proposal was the conceptual design
of the remote arm used by the space
shuttles to deliver and bring back

objects from the far reaches of space.

The Space Shuttle Endeavour
recently arrived in Los Angeles and
was transported to the Science and
Space Museum. Another exhibit there
is the robotic arm that Endeavour and
the other space shuttles used to
retrieve items from space and launch
satellites - another Bregman success
Today Buddy has new goals. He is
determined to educate and excite
young people. He leads by example
that there are no limits to what one can
achieve with only some imagination,

learn they have been used? Contact the

user. Try to work through the steps listed
here. Most everyone understands that
copyright infringement can be serious business. In most situations, something fair and
equitable can be negotiated even after photos have been used.
Its much easier to take the simple steps
required to protect your work at the time it
leaves your possession than to try to get
control of it after use.
Keeping a log of photo packages, digital
images etc that are in the hands of potential
users helps you track usage, payments and
packages that should be returned. It also
often serves as a reminder of where your
best work is located and where and why
you should submit it elsewhere.
Using business forms designed especially for photographers not only help protect
your work, its a short cut to learning about
copyrights, rights to use, terms and conditions. Just select the form that seems to
match your job and complete it! You
should never have to worry about protecting the use of your photos again.
Finally, posting photos on social networking sites is not recommended. If you
post a photo of a logo or trademark (pro
sports uniforms etc) without permission of
the owner of such, you are violating logo
and trademark regulations which could get
you into trouble. Dont do it -- even though
you own the copyright to the photo. You
can submit such photos for editorial purposes to a recognized publisher, TV or
broadcast outlets as a news item or a feature story. So always remember to protect
yourself as well as your work.

SELL PHOTOS YOU ALREADY HAVE!

S TA R T S E L L I N G YO U R P H O T O S
Successful stock libraries contain HIGH QUALITY images of everyday life situations. IFPO members shoot such images everyday as a matter of
course. However, unless a photographer has hundreds or thousands of images, he may be shunned by the large stock houses. This could happen for two
reasons, he simply may not be recognized as a successful stock photographer or his stock of a few dozen images is too small for an agency to consider.
The IFPO Stock Listing service removes these barriers totally and opens doors to the international sales market.

IFPOs Stock Listing Service

The following elements clearly distinguish the
differences in the IFPO Stock Listing Service and
a stock agency:
1. The service provided to IFPO members is a
STOCK PHOTO LISTING SERVICE and
NOT an agency.
2. Each photographer manages his own sales.
3. No commissions will be charged ever.
4. Image buyers will browse the IFPO image
bank on the internet, select the photos, get the
price, index number and contact information to
order directly from the photographer who
owns the images.
5. Members may set their own pricing for each
photo sold.
6. Complete copyright standards will be available at the site for image buyers and IFPO
member photographers (the sellers).
7. Image searches by buyers may be made by
subject.
8. The most important part of any Stock Photo
Service is its indexing system that allows an

image buyer to identify a photo for purchase. There are no commissions ever -- unlike

FREELANCE PHOT OGRAPHERS HALL OF FAME

1983- 2014

ESTABLISHED IN 2008 TO COMMEMORATE THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF IFPO

ore than six years ago to

celebrate the 25th
Anniversary of IFPO
many things were considered. The
intent was to commemorate our first
25 years in a way to honor the contributions of the members who had been
the driving force and heart of the organization. After long deliberation it was
determined to induct those still active
charter members and other deserving
members into a permanent Freelance
Photographers Hall of Fame and to
award each an Honorary Degree of
Distinction title.
When the International Freelance
Photographers Organization (IFPO)
was founded in 1983, no one could
have possibly foreseen 25 to 30 years
into the future. Now, 30 years later,
the original mission of IFPO -- to be
the primary source of support for the
universe of freelance photographers -has stood the test of time and has surely grown beyond the wildest imaginations of the original founders and
members.
IFPOs first member was actually
enrolled on January 9, 1984. From
that day forward IFPO evolved into a
member driven organization. That
simply means that members asked for
services and support and IFPO
responded with research and development. That process evolved over the
years to make IFPO what it is today,
the longest continuing central source
of support for freelance photographers
around the world.
Fortunately, it was easy to identify
the original Hall of Fame candidates.
Since day one IFPO has maintained a
transactional data base that records
every single activity of each IFPO
www.ifpo.net

member. That includes program participation, editorial submissions, press

assignments, photo contest entrants
and other information such as publishing credits, internet home pages URLs
and more. Many members have shared
their success stories outside IFPO
which is also noted in our membership
records. The original process pinpointed 3319 IFPO members (out of 78,656
at that time) to be permanently inducted into the IFPO Hall of Fame.
The first Hall of Fame IFPO members were inducted on January 2,
2008. Each one was notified by letter
or e-mail. If you were not notified, but
believe you may qualify, you may
check to see if your name is listed as a
Hall of Fame member at
www.ifpo.net/halloffame. Enter your
member number plus the first 3 characters of your last name (8 characters
total). If you were inducted your name
will appear on the list.
It is possible that there are deserving Hall of Fame Members that we
were not able to identify from our
extensive records and other research
who should be honored. If you did not
receive notification of your induction
and feel that you should be considered,
please call 336-468-1138 to update
your records and discuss your potential to be inducted.
To further honor and recognize the
Freelance Photographers Hall of Fame
members, IFPO created a unique,
definitive Hall of Fame Portfolio
exclusively designed to share the Honorary Degree of Distinction with
clients and the most discerning friends
and family. Each item in the portfolio
is graced with the distinctive IFPO
Hall of Fame Logo.

T h e
portfolio includes 1 Commemorative
25th Anniversay IFPO Hall of Fame
Lapel Pin of silver inlaid into a field of
black, 1 IFPO Hall of Fame Honorary
Degree of Distinction Diploma and
Charter in a Leatherette Presentation
Case plus 1 IFPO Hall of Fame Member Passport distinctly marked.
The Freelance Photographers Hall
of Fame will be permanently located
on the IFPO internet site. Each Hall of
Fame members record will be also
marked permanently. But it is the Hall
of Fame Portfolio -- The Lapel Pin,
Honorary Degree of Distinction Diploma, Charter and Passport ... that convey the prestige of being inducted into
the IFPO Freelance Photographers
Hall of Fame.
Congratulations to each of you. It
was your lasting interest and ceaseless
suggestions that drove an organization
from its infancy in 1983 to more than
80,000 members strong with international recognition in 2014 ... and still
growing.
With your continued interest the
IFPO Hall of Fame will continue to
review members qualifications and
induct even more members in the next
twenty-five years.

WHAT IS IN YOUR FOCUS?

By Ken Luebbert IFPO, Florissant, MO

Human interest stories are a favorite

in every communitys newspaper and
are some of the first items read or
reviewed in most publications, after
the headlines. Developing human
interest stories accompanied by
insightful and personal photos are the
kind of photo activity that can provide
many exciting opportunities -- and
promote your photography business.
You can meet very interesting individuals and discover insights into new
art, talents, technologies and ethnic
characteristics, etc. You can stretch
your photographic skills in many
directions by keeping the photographic
focus on the subject of your project,
their specialties and unique gifts. Let
your photos capture the subject, their
surroundings, and their passion to support your written words.
This benefits the community by
increasing their awareness of the
unique attributes of the individuals
residing there and can inspire readers
to pursue their own dreams and goals
as well.
If time permits prepare and submit
articles frequently for publication to
your local paper. This will increase the
communitys awareness of you as a

Q&A
I already have Press Credentials.
Why do I have to buy the Chase Kit?
You DO NOT. The Chase Kit was simply
designed to make the breaking NEWS CORRESPONDENTS job easy. It gives you
everything you need on the spot to do the
job, do it right and get it to your nearest editor. The Chase Kit actually serves as your
assistant to make sure you collect all the
facts and then get them to the right place.

What is a Chase photographer; what

do they chase?
We consider any photographer who is in
search of breaking news events to be a
Chase Hound. He chases sports, entertainment, fires, accidents, storms, natural disasters, plane crashes, train wrecks, press conferences and even goodwill tours.

Will the Chase Kit be recognized?

The following Correspondent Photographer has met all standards and requirements to receive full accreditation as a

Will Todays Photographer publish

these news stories?
Todays Photographer WILL publish stories
about YOU covering these stories. The
breaking news stories themselves need to go
to daily newspapers and wire services.

How do I find out if a newspaper or

TV station can use my news photos?
Lets use an auto accident as an example.
You have photographed the wreck and are
leaving the scene without having seen any
other photographers or news teams. Pick up
the nearest phone (using the numbers listed
in your Reporters Field Directory) to notify
news agencies that photos of the accident are
available even though the film has not been
processed. Breaking news is HOT and
should be reported immediately.

AI NEWS CAPTURES
THE SEATTLE SOAR OF THE SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONS
By Ilya Moshenskiy IFPO, Redmond, Washington
I have covered a large variety
of major events all over the
world in the last 35 years of my
photo journalism career. But I
have never witnessed anything
like the sea of blue and green
12th Men who flooded the streets of Seattle and poured into
Century Link Stadium to welcome the Seahawks, our
Superbowl XLVIII champions home.

The energy was absolutely electrifying as QB Russell

Wilson carried the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy onto
the field at Century Link. There was an incredible sense of
community and camaraderie that is very seldom experienced in a lifetime.
You don't have to be a football fan to know that this is
one of the biggest things to ever happen to the Emerald city
of Seattle. It has been a long wait -- but a very proud day to
be a Seattle-ite.

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS CORNERBACK RICHARD SHERMAN #25 (UPPER LEFT) TAKES TO THE PODIUM AT THE WELCOME HOME RALLY; PRESIDENT OBAMA
(UPPER RIGHT) CONGRATULATES THE CHAMPS AT THE WHITE IN MAY 2014. HEAD COACH PETE CARROLL (ABOVE) PRAISES HIS SUPERBOWL XLVIII

E d i t o r i a l Submission Guidelines

Editorial Submission
CHECKLIST

USE THIS FORM to submit ARTICLES, PHOTOS, and TIPS to be considered for
publication in Today's Photographer. USE THIS FORM and follow these guidelines to
make sure your submission package is complete.
LOOK AT THE MAGAZINE!! When you look at examples of what is
actually published in the magazine, it's like looking at the test
answers before taking the test!!
HOW TO SUCCEED is what we are all about! How to make money,
gain access and get published. How did you get the celebrity to let
you get the picture. How did you get the model to pose for you. What
surprise barriers were you able to overcome? How did you get those
death defying pictures right from your car window?
INSPIRATION is the word our readers use most to describe the magazine and it's content! Have you had some success with your camera
or an idea that would inspire others?
SELDOM SHOOTERS: So you only picked up your camera once or
twice in the past few years, shot a lot of film for an afternoon or a
week, then let it get away from you. What was so important that
caused you to pick your camera up? Family reunion? Your kid's big
soccer game? Beach trip of a lifetime? Favorite group finally came to
town in concert? House down the street caught fire? 2 weeks in Yellowstone? Big celebration at work?
DIFFERENT DRUMMERS: Maybe you have a story with a different
slant submit it. You may inspire us to expand our editorial range.
Consider an editorial submission even if you have never made a one
before. Publishing your story and/or photos is another way for us to
reward our readers who share a special bond in their passion for
succeeding as photographers ... and making money. Again, our resolution is to support that effort in every issue and to make sure that
Todays Photographer works for you.

I covered the 22nd Annual Dragon
Boat Festival on Meadow Lake in
Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, New
York in August 2013. It is one of the

largest annual festivals in the New

York Metropolitan area.
Over 170 teams competed for
$60,000 in prizes. Each team rows a
narrow boat decorated like a Chinese

dragon with a colorful head and tail.

Competition is tough and strenuous
team training is required. The racing
teams increase every year with 188
teams expected at the 2014 race.

C ARLOS S ANTANA , R OD S TEWART

AND ME -- ON A SATURDAY NIGHT
By Gary A. Hodge, IFPO North Tonawanda, NY

he opportunity to photograph
two musical legends at one
venue doesn't come along
everyday. However, because of my
affiliation with the American International (AI) News Service, I was
recently able to accomplish this task
at the Carlos Santana and Rod Stewart
double header concerts inside Buffalo, New York's First Niagara Center.
One month prior, I queried the
venue's website administrator for
instructions on how to request permission to photograph their events. Procedures may vary by venues but here
is how it worked for this event.
In brief, to take still photographs or
video one must be affiliated with a
legitimately verifiable magazine,
local or national media outlet or news
service to be eligible to submit a
request. Then the local venue staff
person checks your credentials and
passes your information on to the
national promoter in charge of
access. Once the decision is made
the local staff member lets you
know. I emailed copies of my
American International (AI) News
Service press pass (both sides)
and the assignment letter received
in my press credentials packet. It

worked. I had to wait until the day

before the concert but was notified by
email and telephone that I was
approved and told when and where to
check in at the venue.
The evening of the concert, I
arrived with five other photographers,
checked in and went through security.
Our bags were examined and tagged
when cleared. We waited in the security office of the indoor arena until
shortly after the concert started. We
were then escorted to the pit -- the
area in front of the first row of seats
on the floor where concert goers often
sit at the foot of the stage. We were
allowed to stay for three song or fifteen minutes. After this we were
escorted by security out into a room
where we watched the remainder of
the Carlos Santana concert.
After Santana finished, we went
through the same procedure for the
beginning of the
Rod Stewart
show. However, our shooting
position was
much farther
away. This time
we were only
allowed to stay
for two songs or
ten minutes before we were escorted
out and required to exit the building.
Fortunately, on the way out I was able
to thank the local staff person who
had arranged this opportunity for me.
A few days later, I sent my new
local contact at The First Niagara
Center an email again thanking her for
the opportunity to shoot and included
several pictures of each act. I did it to
show her that I had the equipment and
was capable of shooting both near and
far from the stage. I received a

response thanking me for the pictures.

She also stated that they do like to see
how people who are admitted for the
first time are able to handle the shooting requirements. She complimented
me for an excellent job and welcomed
me to request shooting assignments in
the future. I will look for further
opportunities by checking the listings
of their events as they are announced.
Thanks for reading this article. I
hope it will inspire you and serve as a
teaching tool to enhance your photographic experience and knowledge.
Additionally, I hope my story will
serve as an example of what can be
accomplished with proper credentials,
the right equipment and knowing how
to work with others to accomplish
your goals. I'm very proud of my
experience and finished photographs.
Hopefully you will appreciate them
too.
Most of all I hope this story illustrates what one can achieve with the
right credentials and using the right
approach. It is imperative to learn
early on what is required. Then follow through precisely on your own or
with the help of our editorial staff.

Buddy is currently stationed at the

One can see him by the Space Shuttle Endeavor in the Samuel Oschin

He stimulates young minds to dream

Sharing his knowledge is Buddys

MAKE A GOOD IM-PRESS-ION

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8

stated I was now an official member

of the working press, and if I followed
their Code of Ethics, I would be
afforded most of the privileges given
to members of the press.
So on my first attempt I was able to
make an Im-PRESS-ion on that
police officer who allowed me access
to photograph the Macys Thanksgiving Parade. For reasons unknown, that
experience empowered me with the
confidence to believe that I belonged
and deserved to be there.
I remember hearing or reading
advice from other photographers who
advised others to act like you own the
place (as a member of the press). Its
clear that I already had this confidence
to seek out and gain access to press
events, but it wasnt until I was on
assignment with the support of a
media outlet that I truly began to realize that I was a member of the Press!
What also attracted me to this program was that I could pick and choose
my own assignments and maintain
photo rights. To me, this was the best
of both worlds: being a freelancer who
could also be on assignment for American Image Press. (Per the AI Press
Code of Ethics directive, it is essential
to use the term on assignment for
Todays Photographer magazine -- not
freelance when covering press events.)
Over the years since my first American Image Press Credential, I honed
my skills as a photographer. I continued to make Im-PRESS-ions networking with public relations directors, law enforcement agencies, publishers, etc.
All the while, American Image
Press evolved in terms of their press
pass design (a Press Passport the
most Prestigious credential American
Image has to offer; Gold Press Credentials; full color and larger press
passes [in English, French & Spanish
with custom flag]; AINS Universal
Press Credentials) to the current hard
card in color, passport with custom
flag and large ID format.

throughout my 24 year tenure at
American Image Press provided me
with powerful tools to get me and my
camera where I needed to go.
This affiliation has been ImPRESS-ive enough to get me through
some of the toughest security measures I have ever experienced. At the
Tenth Anniversary Observances of the
Terrorist Attacks on September 11th at
the World Trade Center in New York
City where President Bush, President
Obama and other dignitaries appeared
I went through a Washington DC
background check, complete camera

didnt just let ANYBODY photograph
this event.) My photograph of President Obama pledging to the flag was
published in The News of The Highlands and now here in Todays Photographer!!

to locate him were unsuccessful until a
few months later in a restaurant I saw
a man wearing a jacket that read

name I approached him. It was my
lucky day, he was Sir Alfred J. DiMora!
After a brief conversation, I asked if
a visit to his facility was possible to
learn more and possibly photograph
some of his other automotive concepts. He was kind enough to grant my
request and a date was set to visit his
facility in Palm Springs, California.
There I learned that Mr. DiMora is
an extraordinary gifted designer, engineer, inventor and entrepreneur with a
personal passion for advancing the
state of automotive technology and
manufacturing. When I asked how he
preferred to be addressed, he said,

ON ASSIGNMENT AT THE WHITE HOUSE:

IFPO photographer Jerome Dorn (right) was on

assignment at the White House on July 15, 2013
to cover the story of a young Morehouse college
student from Atlanta who was being honored by
President Obama.
At the very same ceremony which was aired on
national TV , Former President George H. W.
Bush and President Barrack Obama honored
Floyd Hammer and Kathy Hamilton (center
below) with the 5000th Daily Point of Light
Award. Points of Light is worlds largest organization dedicated to volunteer service. The former President Bush 41 is remembered
for a statement from his first Inaugural Address in 1989 in which he invoked the
vision of a "thousand points of light," and invited the nation to take action through
service to their fellow citizens. In 1990 he established the Daily Point of Light Award
for individuals making a difference and recognized more than 1,000 volunteers as
"points of light" during his administration. It was fitting that President Obama invited
him back to the White House to help present the award to 5000th recipients.

YOU CAN BE AN

IFPO DISTRIB UTOR

THE ADVANTAGE

HOW IT WORKS

WHY YOU?

An IFPO Distributorship is an exceptional

opportunity for IFPO members to achieve success and make money by taking advantage of the
millions of dollars and 15 years of research that
have gone into developing the IFPO / Today's
Photographer Magazine Concept. The modest
distributor's fee gives you the value of MILLIONS of dollars that have been invested in 15
years of advertising IFPOs dependability, quality and services.
Today's Photographer Magazine and its associated products gets more exposure than any
other photography magazine. It is advertised regularly in display space advertising in Popular
Photography, Photographic, Outdoor Photographer, American Photographer and Shutterbug. As
a distributor, you get the direct benefit of this
advertising.
Today's Photographer is sold on Newsstands
throughout the United States, Canada, and
around the world.
IFPO is recognized in more than 140 countries on all continents of the world and has more
than 67,000 members. Today's Photographer
Magazine is currently being distributed to more
than 80,000 photography enthusiasts 4 times a
year.
Typically, distributorships or franchises that
give a distributor this kind of exposure, promotion and value are priced from $10,000.00 to
$150,000.00.

1. DISTRIBUTOR DISCOUNT: You are entitled to order products and services from a current issue of Today's Photographer at a only
50% of the listed standard price. For example:
multiply list prices by 0.5 (a $68 membership
would be $34.00). Half of $39.95 for example,
would be $19.98 (rounded off to the nearest
cent).

You may wish to purchase many IFPO programs or services for yourself. A distributorship
will save you 50%.

2. QUANTITIES AND SHIPMENTS: Order in

any quantity. IFPO will ship to you or your customer direct. No minimums or quotas.

If you have a photography studio or similar

business may wish to arm all of your staff members with memberships and press program credentials from IFPO to make them more competitive. An IFPO Distributorship would enable
them to do this at reduced costs to the studio or
company.

YOU CAN:
You can start a new business and coast in the
wake of the IFPO flagship. Let its research,
product development, name recognition and dollars spent on advertising make money for you.
Let IFPO's rapid success plan turn into financial
growth for you.
You can reap the profits from more than 2.5 million dollars already spent on advertising in all the
major photography and video magazines. Let
these IFPO advertising dollars work for you and
your business by building name recognition for
the IFPO products and programs that you sell.
You can offer IFPO products and programs to
your clients without spending a penny for market
research or product development. IFPO is constantly upgrading its products and services to
maintain its leadership position in the international marketplace.
You can guarantee satisfaction for each product
and program you offer. That customer satisfaction is backed up by IFPO and is a vital part of
the IFPO success story.

are excluded. Items not sold in Todays Photographer magazine are excluded.

MAKE MONEY:
A distributor could sell only 2 videos a week
and net up to $2000.00 a year. He could build
his business up to 200 videos a week and be
pulling in potentially $200,000.00 per year.
A distributor could set up a network of 100
Model Consultants "talent scouts" in an area.
He would make nearly $15,000 just on the
model consultant kits and IFPO memberships,
then would make more on the videos, forms,
books and other items that consultants frequently buy.
A distributor could sell to schools and educational institutions. IFPO's instructional videos
are very popular with schools of all kinds
(Junior Highs, High Schools, Colleges, Trade
Schools, etc.). Schools typically purchase in
larger quantities, often 10 to 20 videos at a time.
Currently, about 100 schools are purchasing
from IFPO. There are tens of thousands more in
this country alone.
Recreational groups sponsored by government
or other non-profit groups. For example, Military bases have recreational programs that
include self-help and how-to programs on video.
Currently, IFPO does a brisk business with military base purchase orders from only a few bases.
Many other groups sponsor recreational programs that would be very interested in photography instructional videos. Groups plan trips.
Vacationers use cameras and camcorders.
Photographer's swap meets or flee markets are
ideal places to set a booth and market IFPO
products. In these situations, having merchandise to sell (like videos) is a plus. But if you
don't have the merchandise, be sure to get the
name, address, and phone number of each person that stops by your booth. Each one is a

You may be associated with a group such as a

camera club, family members or close associates
who may want to participate in IFPO products
and services at discount prices.

You may want to start down the road of being

your own boss with an IFPO distributorship. You
can start small, order in any quantities, part time
or full time. Most of all, you may have a few
hours a week to invest in your financial future.
prospective customer for the future. If you run
out of copies of Today's Photographer at your
booth, you can always mail them one in the
future with a special offer flyer of some kind.
REPEAT CUSTOMERS
The best opportunity you have to make
money as a distributor is to give your customers
a REASON to do business with you. You can
use your own liberal distributor discount to your
advantage. If you can give your customers a 5
or 10% discount by purchasing through you,
then they have a reason to order with you
instead of ordering directly through mail order
with IFPO. Your own margins may be a little
slimmer, but your volume would be much higher.
Now you could consider distributing
Today's Photographer Magazines liberally with
your business card attached and a notice that
offers your own 5% or 10% discount if they
order through you.
In this way, you would get the full advantage of repeat orders from the same customers.
Here is a sample list of schools and institutions
that have already placed large orders directly
with IFPO:
AFETA, Camp Peary, VA; Miami Killian
Senior High School, Miami, FL; Leon County Schools,
FL; River East School Division, Winnipeg, Manitoba,
Canada; Aims Community College, Greeley, CO; CBN
University Library, Virginia Beach, VA; Southwest
State University Library, Marshall, MN;University of
Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA; NAF Fort Sam Houston,
TX; Stockton Unified School District, Stockton, CA;
Phillipsburg Board of Education, NJ; Roberts High
School, Florence, CO; Oakton Community College,

Regional Vocational Technical School District, MA;
Ferris State College Library, Big Rapids, MI; Maricopa Community College, Phoenix, AZ; Southeastern
Mass. University, MA; Sparta Senior High School,
Sparta, WI; and many, many more.

The List Price of the IFPO Distributor Program is $387. For a limited time, the price is reduced to $187 plus $12
shipping ($24.75 USD Foreign Shipping) but will only remain at this special price for a limited time.

I Volunteer To Shoot Young Eagles!

BY George Austin IFPO, Greenville, Kentucky

SHOOTING KIDS AND ADULTS WHO ARE

HAVING FUN IS A MUCH BETTER
PROMOTION OF MY WORK THAN TRYING
TO GET SOMEONE INTERESTED IN LOOKING AT MY PORTFOLIO OR JUST SEEING
MY NAME LISTED AS A PHOTOGRAPHER.
GEORGE AUSTIN

In western Kentucky where I live in

in the small town of Greenville with a
population of about 5,000, making
money in photography takes a lot of
imagination and hard work. Hard work
is easy for me; imagination and promotion of my work is not so easy.
Over the years Ive considered
myself to be a community photographer shooting high school sports,
reunions and entertainment events. I
also shoot news events. All of this gets
me recognition as a photographer but I
continuously need to explore new
venues to keep my name out there to
prospective clients. Volunteering is
one way I do that and have lots of fun.

I am a ground crew member of a

support chapter of the Experimental
Aircraft Association (EAA) that is
headquartered in Oshkosh,Wisconsin.
It sponsors the Young Eagles program
all over the country to promote the
love of aviation by planting a seed in
children ages 8-17 who may later take
up training as a pilot or some other
aviation related field.
Each child who participates
becomes a Young Eagle and enjoys a
flight at no cost to the themselves or
their families. The costs are paid for
by the pilot/owner of the airplanes.
This is an exciting program for kids
of all ages in a small town such as

Greenville. A complete support system materializes including a registration station, radio controllers, escorts
and photographers all working to give
kids in a remote area the experience of
a lifetime as families and friends stand
by to cheer and see their Young Eagles
fly.
I shoot each child (with the permission of a parent or guardian) and give
them one free photo. Sometimes I
make more sales; sometimes I do not.
However, those kids remember me.
Frequently when I am out and about
(remember this is a small town) I see
or hear one of them saying, Theres
my photographer! Priceless.

THE 50TH MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL IN HILO, HAWAII

By C. Edward Freeman IFPO, Kapolei, HI

The celebration of the 50th Merrie Monarch Festival was held in Hilo, Hawaii. It is the largest Hula competition in the
state and is dedicated to the memory of King David Kalakaua, also known as the Merrie Monarch. He restored many of
the nearly extinct traditions of old Hawaii, especially the hula. The hula had not been performed publicly for many years.
The hula was the way that early Hawaiians interpreted the culture, history, stories, and more of the Hawaiian life style.

MAKE A GOOD IM-PRESS-ION

Todays Photographer International

Magazine [Winter 2002, pg. 26]. The
OJ Simpson murder Trial of the Century, Whitney Houstons funeral and
many, many more. I also have some
prestigious upcoming assignments
including a Red Carpet, sporting and
political events.
I made several Im-PRESS-ions on
our own Editor in Chief, Vonda
Blackburn as she did for me over the
years (heading up a media outlet that
has proven itself time and time again).
I am particularly proud of my latest
IM-PRESS-ion when I suggested
that IFPO/American Image Press manufacture Custom Lanyards to go with
the current hard card credentials.
She LOVED that idea; within a
month, orders were being placed for
one or all four specially designed lanyards! I received a free set of all four

lanyards, but the real prize was

knowing and seeing other IFPO/American Image Press photographers,
including my nephew, wearing these
lanyards with pride.
Speaking of my nephew -- I recently, without hesitation, recommended
American Image Press to him-- Kevin
Richardson. He is interested in event
photography and needed press credentials. During a family gathering, I took
a photograph of him to use for his ID
badge. He immediately CALLED and
applied for membership and press credentials over the phone and submitted
his ID photo online.
It has been nearly a year now that
Kevin is too a proud member of IFPO
and American Image Press. He and I
have already covered some events
together (SuperBowl Boulevard; Couture Fashion Show; Chinese News

Y e a r s
Parade). It is a
pleasure to
personally
experience
someone
close to me
share in the
passion of
press photography!
Thank you,
Vonda Blackburn, IFPO, MARTIN LUTHER KING III
and American
HENRY SMITH
Image Press
for making an Im-PRESS-ion on me
and providing the framework for my
photographic passion to move beyond
a hobby and flourish -- to the point of
getting my work published over and
over again!!

The American Image Press Photographers Code of Ethics

A press photographers reputation is based on his own code of ethics.
Although getting the story is the ultimate goal, ethical standards can
make or break a career. It is the duty of a press photographer to document newsworthy happenings never altering circumstances or interfering with action to enhance your photographs. Your photos should tell
a story just as it happened. Meeting the high standards of press photography requires patience, determination and strong ethics.
First, foremost and always remember that Press access is a privilege not to be abused. Use the following Code of Ethics to guide you:
Arrive early at least 45 minutes before an event is scheduled to
begin to find the press area, check out the stage or facility lay-out
and choose a vantage point.
Never show up unprepared. Not only should you have all the proper
equipment, you should have a basic knowledge and understanding of
the event. Do your homework!
Try to work with promoters and authorized officials not against them.
Conduct yourself in a professional manner. Photographers who
complain or cause problems arent likely to be admitted again.
Dont just start shooting. Think about what youre covering.

Today's Photographer International

Stay within the boundaries of the press area. Never interfere with
the action, criticize a player or performer or interrupt an official.
Exercise patience. Resist the urge to inconvenience other photographers by changing positions. Your opportunity will come.
Although it is necessary to get a good position, courtesy pays.
Other photographers are usually willing to share their space -- if you
share yours. Develop good relations with other members of the press.
Always live up to your obligations to promoters and publications.
Press photos are for editorial purposes -- not to be sold commercially.
Posting press photos on social media sites violates this code.
Always clean up after yourself -- snack wrappers, water bottles etc.
Never photograph anyone in a compromising situation (backstage,
locker rooms) unless its a public figure in a public place which qualifies
for news. Never abuse the privileges of the press.
Remember you are a photographer on the job -- not a spectator.
Finally, the nature of breaking news makes preparation impossible.
However, you should use the same ethical standards you display at
scheduled media events. With practice and common sense, high ethical
standards should come as naturally as clicking the shutter.
