Lab Manual: Available on MyCourse, you must print off a version of the lab you are performing and have it
available during you assigned lab period. Edits to the lab may occur during the lab, we will make note of major
edits on MyCourses.
Evaluation of laboratory work in the 212 lab:
The focus of CHEM 212 lab is on the development of laboratory skills and abilities, maintaining an accurate lab
notebook and the scientific communication of laboratory results. The CHEM 212 lab is worth 20% of your
overall course grade in CHEM212 and is further subdivided as follows:
12% Laboratory Reports. Each individual lab has a corresponding lab report form on MyCourses which you
should consult for specific information on what we expect to see in the report.
2% Pre-lab Quizzes (via MyCourses). There is a pre-lab quiz for each experiment you perform.
6% Lab Performance. This mark will take into account your ability to maintain a clean working
environment, cleaning of communal areas, organizational skills and development of laboratory expertise
Be aware that a minimum lab grade of 50% is required to obtain a passing course grade. If this is not achieved,
both the lab and full course are considered failed.
Lab reports:
All lab reports are due 1 week after the lab is performed by 12:00 noon. All lab reports must be submitted
online through the Assignments tab on the lab MyCourses page. Supplementary, non-electronic report pages
(i.e. annotated spectra) must be submitted in print form, by the same time/date, to the dropbox outside lab 128.
Late lab reports will receive a 10% penalty for every additional day and will not be accepted after 1 week.
Safety:
Lab coats and safety goggles must be worn at all times while you are in the laboratory. Full pants and shoes that
fully cover your feet are also mandatory. Students without proper laboratory attire will not be allowed in the
laboratory. Lab coats and goggles will be sold in the Holmes room, basement of Maass building, at the
beginning of the term. Those with prescription glasses must wear safety goggles that fit over their glasses, side
shields are not acceptable. All accidents must be reported no matter how minor/severe. Further safety

Absence:
If absent from a lab, you will receive a grade of zero for that experiment. You will only be allowed to do the
experiment during another lab period if you can provide a legitimate university excuse. Medical excuses will
only be accepted with a doctors note. The note must include the doctors name, phone number, the date and the
reason for the absence.
If you miss more than one lab unexcused you will receive a grade of J (unexcused absence failed).
If you know in advance that you will have to miss a laboratory experiment (for a legitimate reason), you must
contact the Lab Coordinator, Mike Daoust, as soon as possible to arrange a make-up lab.
