Milk and Honey

By Pam Jemelian @ WingShadowWraps

A little bit of milk and a whole lot of honey! The Milk and Honey Shawlette or
Scarf is a simple, quick-to-knit, one-skein project. It is a deep crescent shape that
drapes nicely around the shoulders. Knit from the bottom up, the border features
69 pretty lace bumble bees, and the border graduates into a simple short row
garter stitch body. I choose to knit it in Lornas Laces Honor Yarn which is a cream
and honey color variegated yarn that is a blend of soft Baby Alpaca and Silk. It has
275 yards on the skein and is DK in weight. After blocking, my shawlette it ended
up measuring 56 long and 10 at its widest center point. The instructions are in
written format only since it is easier to understand the lace pattern in written
format, and the short rows after being set up are simply worked from place marker
to place marker. Definitely a weekend knit, and since it is lightweight and summerthemed, it is perfect for the warmer months!

Materials
**1 skein Lornas Laces Honor Yarn in the shade of Monkeyshines (275 yards on the skein and is DK in weight). Please note that I
used every bit of the yarn minus a very small length to complete this project, however, I am a loose knitter.
**Gauge will be important if you are trying to get a whole shawlette out of the Lornas Lace Honor Yarn that I used. My gauge in
garter stitch is 4 stitches and 4 rows to the inch, which I worked on U.S. Size 4 needles. As I mentioned before, I have a fairly
loose tension to my knitting, and therefore use up more yarn than most knitters do. In the unlikely event that you happen to
run out of yarn while working this project, it would still work very well with some scrap cream colored yarn in the same DK
weight at the very top, last few rows of the shawlette. It would either blend in with the rest of the yarn if it is a small area, or
would make a small milk collar at the top of the shawlette, which furthers the theme!
**U.S. Size 4 circular knitting needles at least 29 inches in length, or size needed to obtain gauge.
**2 place markers
**Darning Needle for burying loose yarn ends

Instructions
Cast On 276 stitches using the Lace Cast On Technique so it will be stretchy. If you arent familiar with how to do this, here is a
link to a video that demonstrates the cast on method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPagekwVzW8
Knit 2 rows, and then begin the Honey Bee Lace Border Pattern. The odd numbered rows are the right side of the shawlette, all
even rows are the wrong side. You are working the shawlette from the bottom up to the top, beginning with the lace edging
first. After you work a few rows, you may want to mark the right side of your knitting for reference.

Honey Bee Lace Pattern

(multiple of 12)
Row 1 (RS): k4, k2-tog, yo, ssk, k4, rep across.
Row 2 (WS): p3, p2-tog-b, drop the yo of the previous row off the needle, yo twice, p2-tog, p3, rep across.
Row 3 : k2, k2-tog, drop the yos of the previous row off the needle, yo 3 times, ssk, k2, rep across.
Row 4: p1, p2-tog-b, drop the yos of the previous row off the needle, yo 4 times, p2-tog, p1, rep across.
Row 5: k2-tog, drop the yos of the previous row off the needle, cast on 4 sts on the right-hand needle (if you are not sure which
cast on to use for this, use the backward loop cast onhere is a good video link that will show you how to do it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE_XD854iMo ) , k1 under the 4 loose strands of the dropped yos, then yo and k1 again
under the 4 loose strands, cast on 4 sts on right-hand needle again using the backward loop cast on, ssk, rep across.
Row 6: p5, p2-tog (stitch and the following yo), p6, rep across.
Rep Rows 1 to 6 2 more times for a total of 3 repeats.
Knit 2 rows, ending having worked a wrong side row and ready to start working the short row garter body. Do not break yarn.

Short Row Body Section

Please note that there is no need to do a w & t on the short rows on this shawlette. Because you are working in garter stitch,
the small hole that is left when turning your piece in the middle of the row is well disgused. Simply turn your piece when it is
indicated and start working in the opposite direction.
1. Knit 143 stitches on RS of the shawlette, turn & PM.
2. Knit 10 stitches on wrong side of border, turn & PM.
3. (All Right Sides) Knit to 1 st before marker, ssk by slipping st before marker RM, slipping st after marker then knit
slipped sts, knit 6 sts, turn and PM.
4. (All Wrong Sides) Knit to 1 st before turning point, k2tog by RM then k2tog with the st that was before and the st that
was after the marker, knit 6 sts , turn and PM.
Repeat these last 2 rows until all sts have been worked. You will have decreased 38 sts and 238 sts remain on you needles.
Bind off in a regular, non-stretchy bind off. Bury any loose yarn ends. Block and enjoy! Please note in the picture above
that when blocking, it works best if you pull out the round body of the bottom honey bee so it forms a scalloped border.
