PERSONAL REFLECTION 1
A day reading of Johamis book gives me the basic perceptions of music education in
Malaysia. It is the beginning of the development of our country's musical education level. Not
only the efforts of teachers, educators and even students themselves. Our country has a lot of
specialist expertise in music education but do not use it well. Music specialists in Malaysia most
prefer to teach in a private school and worked in the private sector compared to teach in schools,
universities and public colleges.
In school, we always ask students to present chorus, dance, singing etc. They want the
entertainment but they didn't realize that entertainment that they want is come from a good
foundation of music. To get the good foundation, musicians have to develop their skills not even
in playing instrument, but their knowledge too. But some school administrators to take it easy on
the subject. They can easily provide music education to the other core subjects. At the same time,
they want schools that do the best in co-curriculum activities but they do not give priority to the
basic subjects such as music education.
Malaysian always assumes that study in music courses is wasting time and money but
they didnt realize that music education is a part of forming a balanced human in holistically. In
Malaysia Philosophy of Education (Falsafah Pendidikan Kebangsaan), its mentioned that
education is a continuous effort to develop individual potential holistically and integrated to
create balanced and harmony human in terms of intellectual, spiritual, physical and emotional.
Music educations are include in most of the aspect that mention in the philosophy but its always
be mentioned that its wasnt an important subject.
