Plotting Points on a Grid

To plot a point on a coordinate grid, follow these steps.
STEP 1 Locate the x vaLue on the x-axis.
STEP 2 From the x vaLue, move directLy up (for a positive
y vaLue) or directly down (for a negative y vaLue).
STEP 3 Label this point.

EXAMPLE 1 Plot point A = (5, -4) on the grid at the

right.

·t:,;~f:i'
STEP 1

,STEP 2
Find the value x
From the vaLue 5 on the x-axis,
move down to the y value -4.
= 5 on the x-axis.

STEP 3 Label point A.

EXAMPLE 2 Plot point B = (0, 5)

STEP 1 Begin at x = 0, the
up to the y vaLue
STEP 2 Label point B.

Graphing a Line
When plotted points lie on a straight line, draw a line through the
points and extend this line to the edges of the grid. The points where the
line crosses the axes are called intercepts of the line.
• The x-intercept is the point where the line crosses the x-axis.
For the x-intercept, the y-coordinate is 0.
• The y-intercept is the point where the line crosses the y-axis.
For the y-intercept, the x-coordinate is 0.

EXAMPLEGraph the line containing the points

(-4, -2), (0,2), and (2,4).
Plot the points and labeLeach point
with its coordinates.
Draw a Lineth\'ugh the points.
Extend the line to the edges of
the grid.
Identify the points where the Line
crosses each axis.
x-intercept = (-2, 0)
y-intercept = (0, 2)

Graph the line containing each set of three points. Find the x- and
y-intercepts of each line.
