1. HP ScanJet Scanner Setup

a. What to do if setup fails

-----------------------------

The Setup program may fail for various reasons depending on

the hardware and memory configuration of your computer. If
Setup fails, try one of the following:
1. Reboot the system and attempt to rerun Setup. Sometimes
the current memory configuration caused by other programs
can have a negative effect on Setup and restarting the
system fixes the problem.

2. If the program files were copied to your hard disk before

setup failed, then completing the installation is quite
easy. To complete the installation manually after the
files were copied, do the following steps (start at the
step which failed):

a. Install the program icons in the Program Manager.

The programs are:

HP PicturePlace HPPPLACE.EXE
HP Copier HPCOPIER.EXE
Screen Calibration SCREEN.EXE
SCSI Addresses SCSIADDR.EXE
Scanner Test SCANTEST.EXE

b. Reboot the system. (If you have not yet installed the
interface card, turn off the machine and follow those
steps in the manual.)

c. When HP PicturePlace is first run, click on "Change

To..." under the "Directory" menu item and change to
the "Images" subdirectory under the directory where
HP PicturePlace was installed. (Setup would normally
set this as the default path.)

d. In HP PicturePlace, click the "Scan" button. After

the preview scan occurs in HP PictureScan, click on
the "Options" button. In the Options dialog, click
on the Printer icon along the left and set the
appropriate printer for your system. (Setup would
normally ask you to set this.)

e. Run the "Screen Calibration" utility program. This

sets some parameters for HP PictureScan to use.

f. If Setup did all the above things before failing, then

setup completed all required steps and the software
should be ready to use.

b. Changes setup makes to the system files

-------------------------------------------

If the scanner does not work after Setup has run, then you
can check the modifications Setup made to your CONFIG.SYS
and SYSTEM.INI files, using the DOS EDIT program or Windows
Notepad program. If the files are not correct, you may
either edit them yourself, then reboot; or copy the saved
files (CONFIG.HP and SYSTEM.HP) back to their original
filenames (CONFIG.SYS and SYSTEM.INI), make any necessary
edits, and then reboot.

When allowed to modify CONFIG.SYS and SYSTEM.INI, setup

should do the following:

1. CONFIG.SYS (C:\CONFIG.SYS)
If you are using an HP ScanJet 3p or HP ScanJet IIp
scanner with the HP I/O mapped interface card, make
sure the following two lines appear in the file (with
appropriate directories):

DEVICE=C:\SCANJET\MINI400I.SYS
DEVICE=C:\SCANJET\SJIIX.SYS

If you are using a different SCSI card (ASPI or CAM)

that is already installed in your computer, only the
following line should be in the CONFIG.SYS file:

DEVICE=C:\SCANJET\SJIIX.SYS

If you have an older HP ScanJet IIp scanner that uses

the HP ROM based interface card (this card has switches
for the user to set), then only the following line
should appear in the CONFIG.SYS file:

DEVICE=C:\SCANJET\SJII.SYS

2. SYSTEM.INI (found in the Windows directory)

If you are using the HP I/O mapped interface card, then
the following lines should appear in the [386Enh] section
of SYSTEM.INI (older HP scanner ROM based interface cards
and scanners connected to 3rd party SCSI cards should not
have these lines):

device=C:\SCANJET\WIN400I.386
device=C:\SCANJET\HPSCANR.386

c. Removing the HP Scanning Software from your system

------------------------------------------------------

These are instructions to completely uninstall the HP

Scanning Software from your computer:

1. Make a backup copy of your CONFIG.SYS and

WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI files.

2. From DOS (not from a DOS shell under Windows) do the

following:

a. If either of these lines is present in your

SYSTEM.INI file, remove it from the file:

DEVICE=...\WIN400I.386
DEVICE=...\HPSCANR.386

[Note: "..." will usually be "C:\SCANJET" but may be a

different path depending on the directory and disk
drive where Setup installed the HP Scanning Software.]

b. If any of the following lines are present in your

CONFIG.SYS file, remove them from the file:

DEVICE=...\MINI400I.SYS
DEVICE=...\SJIIX.SYS
DEVICE=...\SJII.SYS
DEVICE=...\SJDRIVER.SYS

[Note: "..." will usually be "C:\SCANJET" but may be

a different path depending on the directory and disk
drive where Setup installed the HP Scanning Software.]

c. Delete the following files from your WINDOWS

directory:

HPPS.INI
HPPPLACE.INI
HPPPEDIT.INI
HPCOPIER.INI

d. Delete the following file from your WINDOWS\TWAIN

directory:

HPPS.DS

e. Delete all of the files in the directory where the HP

Scanning Software was installed.

f. Remove the directory where the HP Scanning Software

was installed.

3. From the Windows Program Manager:

a. Delete the Program Manager Group where the HP Scanning

Software was installed. The HP Scanning Software
icons will be removed automatically.

2. HP PicturePlace

a. Using the HP Scanning Software with other Program Managers

--------------------------------------------------------------

If you are installing the HP Scanning Software on a system

which uses another program manager, such as Norton Desktop
or HP Dashboard, you may need to do some additional steps to
add the HP Scanning Software icons to a program group. For
information on how to do this, consult your manual for the
specific program manager you use.

The executable programs which should be installed are listed

below. All are installed in the directory chosen at setup.

HP PicturePlace HPPPLACE.EXE
HP Copier HPCOPIER.EXE
Screen Calibration SCREEN.EXE
SCSI Addresses SCSIADDR.EXE
Scanner Test SCANTEST.EXE

NOTE: If you ever re-install the software in a new directory,

be sure to update these program icons as well.

================================================================

3. HP PicturePlace Editor

a. Brush and Eraser shape choices

----------------------------------
When using the brush or the eraser, drawing is faster if the
shape is square instead of round.

b. Changes to the Preferences dialog

-------------------------------------
Changes made in the preferences dialog in the HP PicturePlace
Editor are separate from changes to the preferences dialog in
HP PicturePlace. If you would like a change to be effective
in both places, please make the change in both locations.

c. Problems with "Open", "Save", and "Save As" dialogs

-------------------------------------------------------

The HP Scanning Software uses some dialogs such as "Open",

"Save", and "Save As" found in a common dialog file which
ships with Microsoft Windows Version 3.1 called COMMDLG.DLL.
It is possible for some applications to install a version
of this file which is older than the one that ships with
Windows or the HP Scanning Software. The proper COMMDLG.DLL
file that Windows ships and that the HP ScanJet Scanner Setup
program upgrades is found in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
Any COMMDLG.DLL file in the main WINDOWS directory that is
older than the one in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory may be
safely deleted.

================================================================

4. HP PictureScan

a. Updating an out-of-date HPSCANER.DLL file

---------------------------------------------

The main scanner library for HP PictureScan (HPSCANER.DLL)

is created by Hewlett-Packard Company and is used by other
software vendors so that their software can be used with the
HP scanners. At the time this product was released, this
file was the newest version available. However, other
applications may have an older version of this file. It is
possible for Windows to find and use one of these older
versions of HPSCANER.DLL which cannot be used by HP
PictureScan. When this happens, HP PictureScan will display
a dialog asking you to correct the problem.
Ways to correct this compatibility problem:

1. First try closing any other application that involves

scanning so it isn't running at the same time as HP
PictureScan. These applications include OCR packages,
copier programs (such as HP Copier), and older versions
of HP DeskScan. One of these other applications might be
using an older version of HPSCANER.DLL and closing it
will fix the problem.

2. Next, manually upgrade your application's older copy of

HPSCANER.DLL to the most recent version. To do this,
first close both HP PictureScan and the application.
Then change to the directory containing the other
application which supports scanning and look for a file
named "HPSCANER.DLL". Make a backup copy of this file by
copying HPSCANER.DLL to a floppy disk. Then copy the
up-to-date version of HPSCANER.DLL from the directory
which contains your HP scanning software (C:\SCANJET)
into the application's directory. Restart the application
and try again to scan from HP PictureScan.

b. Adding sharpening to pictures scanned as Drawings

-----------------------------------------------------

When scanning pictures whose picture type is Drawing, you

can add sharpening to the image by holding down the CTRL
key when selecting the Accept button. Sharpening can bring
out more detail for some pictures. Not every picture will
benefit from sharpening, because it will sometimes emphasize
flaws or blemishes in the original picture.

c. Cancel button during ADF scanning from HP PicturePlace

----------------------------------------------------------

When scanning using the ADF from HP PicturePlace, the Cancel

button in the progress dialog will not always respond to a
mouse click. Try pressing the Enter key on the keyboard to
cancel the scan, or simply remove the rest of the pages from
the ADF. Always let the current page continue to be fed;
the scan will terminate after the current page.

================================================================

5. HP Copier

a. What to do if HP Copier prints blank pages

----------------------------------------------

If your HP ScanJet Scanner is equipped with an optional

Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), a blank page may be the
result of leaving a page on the scanner glass while
attempting to copy a page in the ADF. To solve this
problem, simply remove the page from the scanner glass,
then proceed to make copies from the pages in the ADF.
Some other older printer drivers produce blank pages when
used with HP Copier. Upgrading to a newer version of the
printer driver for your particular printer may solve this
problem.

b. What to do if HP Copier prints bar code type output

-------------------------------------------------------

Some older printer drivers produce a "bar-code" type output

at the top of some pages. In the "Options" dialog, there
might be a setting for "Graphics Mode". Setting this to
"Raster" may solve the problem. If not, then upgrading to
a newer version of the printer driver for your particular
printer may solve this problem also.

c. How to adjust the default brightness of HP Copier

-----------------------------------------------------

HP Copier can be adjusted for the variations that exist in

different printers. After running the HP Copier program at
least once, a file is created in the Windows directory called
"HPCOPIER.INI". It will have information like the following
(Some of the numbers might be different):

[Position]
Left=49
Top=53

[Counter]
TotalCount=10
LastCount=2

[ToneMap]
Text=0
Photo=0
TextPhoto=0

In the section labeled "ToneMap" you may change the values

to adjust the brightness for the various types of copies.
A positive number will lighten the copies, while a negative
number will darken the copies. A value of 10 or 15 is as
much change as any printer should require, but larger changes
can be tried.

d. If HP Copier doesn't capture all of the information you

wanted from a page
-----------------------------------------------------------

When a copy is made and printed to a LaserJet printer, the

printer is unable to print to the edge of the paper; there
is a 1/4 inch margin on all edges. (Other printers may have
margins of different sizes.) While most pages copied do not
have information in this area, some pages do. If there is
information in this area of your original that you wish to
be included in the copy, try a combination of moving the
original page away from the edge of the scanner glass and
setting the scaling to be slightly smaller than 100%. In
this way you will be able to see the entire page on your
copy.

e. HP Copier does not print landscape

--------------------------------------

For speed and simplicity reasons, HP Copier forces all pages

to be printed in the portrait orientation, even though most
printer drivers have a landscape orientation option. In
order to get copies of your originals printed in the
landscape orientation on the printed output, either turn
your original on the scanner glass, or use HP PictureScan
to scan your original and HP PicturePlace Editor to rotate
and print it.

f. Using HP Copier with Fax software

-------------------------------------

Any fax software which is installed as a printer driver and

connected to a fax modem may be used with HP Copier to send
quick and easy faxes. Simply click on the Setup button on
the front panel of the HP Copier program and select the fax
printer driver as your selected printer. In the fax printer
driver options, select fine resolution. Standard resolution
will result in distorted pages.

g. What to do if the error message "Unable to load the library

(ACCUPAGE.DLL)" appears.
---------------------------------------------------------------

There is a known compatibility problem between HP Copier,

HP Accupage and the HP LaserJet program called HP Status
Window. If HP Copier gives you the error message "Unable
to load the library (ACCUPAGE.DLL)" and your system has
the Status Window application for an HP LaserJet, then you
will need to close the Status Window in order to use HP
Copier. You may keep the Status Window from running in any
future Windows sessions by removing it. This is accomplished
by double-clicking on the "Remove Status Window" program icon
in the "HP Laserjet" group in Program Manager. You may
manually remove it by using NOTEPAD to edit WIN.INI. Delete
"hpsw.exe" from the line that starts with "load=".

If HP Status Window is not running on your system, and

the error message still occurs, then closing other
applications or removing other programs from "load=" and
"run=" lines in WIN.INI could solve the problem.

6. Other Application Notes

When scanning from Fax Software programs:
-----------------------------------------
Many fax vendors need to have data scanned as a Drawing at
fax resolution. When scanning from these packages, please
make sure the Picture Type is set to Drawing and the
Destination Option is set at either Fax-Fine or Fax-Standard.
Both of these settings can be found in the Options dialog in
HP PictureScan. If you receive any error messages about
image type or dots per inch, please verify that these
settings are correct.

If an object is displayed with strange colors:

----------------------------------------------
Inserting objects from some applications can result in the
picture being displayed with strange colors. This is due
to a palette update problem, and can be fixed by simply
minimizing your application and restoring it again. This
will force the screen to repaint and should fix the problem.

If your scanned picture is displayed as a negative:

---------------------------------------------------
When scanning pictures from some applications using TWAIN
Acquire, the resulting image is displayed as a negative.
If this happens, scan the picture from HP PicturePlace and
save it as a file. Then open the saved picture in your
application.

Aldus IntelliDraw version 2.0:

------------------------------
IntelliDraw will return a message saying "Insufficient
Memory" when the Accept button is clicked from HP
PictureScan. You can work around this by scanning the
image from HP PicturePlace, saving it, and then opening the
saved image in IntelliDraw.

Lotus Notes version 3.0:

------------------------
If you will be scanning using HP PictureScan from Lotus
Notes v3.0, first scan from HP PicturePlace and turn off
the Automatic Image Find feature in the HP PictureScan
software. Turning this off will produce better results
when scanning with Lotus Notes.
