2) Save this file as text only (or plain text >> other encoding >> US-ASCII
>> OK), call it filename: datafile.txt
Will save as ASCII file in free format.
3) Select Tools >> Input Analyzer
4) Select File >> New

A new window will appear.

5) Select File >> Data File >> Use Existing

Use pull down menu of files of type , select files of type : text files (*.txt).
(in general Arena is looking for files with extension of .dst or .flt)
Select datafile.txt. A histogram will appear in top window with some info about this
histogram in the text window below it.
6) As an example select Fit >> Uniform and the result is a below:
Distribution Summary
Distribution: Uniform
Expression: UNIF(3.5, 59.5)
Square Error: 0.016273
Chi Square Test
Number of intervals = 9
Degrees of freedom = 8
Test Statistic
= 20.9
Corresponding p-value
= 0.00781
Data Summary
Number of Data Points
= 61
Min Data Value
=4
Max Data Value
= 59
Sample Mean
= 30.4

Sample Std Dev

= 13.9

Histogram Summary
Histogram Range
= 3.5 to 59.5
Number of Intervals = 56
7) You can select

Fit >> Fit All and the result is as below:

Distribution Summary
Distribution: Beta
Expression: 3.5 + 56 * BETA(1.49, 1.61)
Square Error: 0.014529
Chi Square Test
Number of intervals = 9

= 11.3
Corresponding p-value
= 0.0835

Sample Std Dev
= 13.9
Histogram Summary
Histogram Range
= 3.5 to 59.5
Number of Intervals = 56

8) You can select Window >> Fit All Summary and the result will be as below:

9) Statistical measures for distribution fitness by Arena are:

Mean square error: smaller value is better
Goodness-of-fit hypothesis testing: Chi-square and Kolmogorov-Simrnov (KS)
P-value (0-1): larger value is better
Read page 151 of 2nd edition, page 161 of 3rd edition, or page 181 of 4th edition for
discussion on p-value a high p-value does not constitute proof of a good fit just a
lack of evidence against the fit
10) Initially, Arena drew this graph with its automatic selected parameters:

Lets change histogram and see how output will change (just a bit in this
case) . After having initial histogram, to change histogram use
Options >> Parameters >> histogram, then change number of cells. You
will get the followings:

Distribution Summary
Distribution: Beta
Expression: 3.5 + 56 * BETA(1.45, 1.58)
Square Error: 0.003729
Chi Square Test
Number of intervals = 5
Degrees of freedom = 2
Test Statistic
= 1.05

= 0.604
