Music Video Treatment for Im Not Alone (Calvin Harris)

Background of the Artist

Adam Richard Wiles, or his more popular stage name Calvin Harris, was born in January 1984 in Dumfries, Scotland,
and is 30 years of age. He made his debut into music in 2007 with his gold-selling album I Created Disco. This set the
scene for his later albums all in the same genre of electro/dance. Since then he is known to sing as well as song-write
and holds the record for the most top ten hits from one studio album on the UK Singles Chart with nine hits,
surpassing Michael Jackson.
His music genre is very modern and didnt start to get popularity until the late 1980s and early 90s- today it is what
most pop music contains explaining why Harris is so successful other than talent.

Background of the Track

The song we have collectively agreed on choosing is Im Not Alone from Harris second album Ready for the Weekend which reached number one on the
UK Albums Chart featuring the top-five hit Ready for the Weekend, and the singles Flashback and You Used to Hold Me; as well as Im Not Alone which
made number one on the UK Singles Chart.
The genre of the song is electronic dance, as is the rest of the album. Harris said "The whole track's a light and shade thing, two styles put together. This is
regarding not the genre but instead the feel of the song as happy and then sad. He also states the meaning behind the song by saying Maybe it's staying
in a room for a huge amount of time on your own, and that's reflected in the lyrics!".

Why Choose this Song?

We collectively decided to choose this song for many different reasons. The first being the genre of dance or electronic/house- our record company
supports this genre as it is what the current youthful generation listen to making it gain popularity thus selling more. The genre also corroborates our ideas
for the video being set in a city where the population is mainly youthful and would take part in activities shown in our narrative ideas.

Other reasons we chose this song: the song features a varied tempo, where it begins slow and gradually speeds up and remains fast after the drop. This
allows us to use more varied shots, for instance during the slower paced parts of the music we would use longer shots and slower cuts, and where the
music picks up, faster cuts and more varied angles.

Narrative Ideas
The initial idea was of a group of maybe 3 or so individuals being followed throughout the day, the story would follow their interactions and how their
storys intertwine with each others, the story then climaxes with all three individuals meeting together in a nightclub or party.
The second Idea is a story where one individual is pursued throughout the city of London by masked individuals (possibly wearing roller skates to create a
sense of motion and surrealism) throughout the day, this idea allows us to incorporate varied environments with different angles and lighting, with this idea
we wanted the story to start where it ended, a cyclic narrative. The idea of the main character being pursued allows us to match the pace of the song as we
can place sections of high action and intensity and slower sections where we can build tension.
This concept can be mirrored in the lyrics of the song as the artist is talking about loneliness. The men chasing him can be viewed as his demons haunting
him and tormenting his solitude.

Location(s)
One location which stuck out to all three of us was Hampstead Heath in London; this is because it allows a great view of London from a distance showing a
contrast from the calm start of the track to the middle which is much more vibrant. Also this location can apply to conventions of the genre dance where a
lot of shots of the sky and time lapses are used. The complications of this are typically at these times of the day from about 10:00 onwards till dark, this spot
on the heath is crowded.
Later on in the video the character(s) will move deeper into the city (Camden and then eventually further into Regents park, which is only a quick bus
journey away) to reflect the intensity of the music and lyrics also.
Another possible location is Brick Lane and Shoreditch. The street itself is usually quite busy allowing for interaction but this may cause issues already
stated.

Mise en Scene
Props: these are the props that we may or may not use depending on how our ideas develop or if we do not use certain ideas (such as the one involving
pursuers).

The masks worn that were mentioned in our narrative ideas

Roller blades/skates
Costume (clothing)
Alcohol

Lighting:
We will take advantage of natural light until nightfall, when we will be able to use the street lights and flashing euphoric club lights to provide lighting.

Camerawork/Cinematography
We are planning to reflect the tempo and flow of the song through the camerawork as at the beginning of the track it is quieter and slow meaning there will
be minimal cuts and shots with less motion. This will allow the characters to be presented with clarity before the drop where camerawork will involve lots
more movement and faster cuts to the beat during editing.
The motion with the camera at the start of the song will hopefully be obtained by using a Steadicam. With this in mind, we created a shot idea for our
characters crossing paths; this is a transition from a front-facing mid-shot to a tracking shot when the next person walks into frame, all in the same cut.
Regarding the location, a time lapse would create a great effect to the music and lyrics as well as being one of the frequently used conventions for a dance
video. The slow pace of the song at the beginning would be echoed by this time lapse too.

Costume
So far weve had the intention to make all characters dress casually as they are a civilian in the streets of a city. Nothing unusual to everyday clothing has
been suggested until we further our narrative ideas and structure. The pursuers are to wear all black- either suits or
anything black.
