Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally kick off Bharatiya Janata Party's cam
paign for the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls on Saturday at a mega rally at the i
conic Ramlila Maidan.
Around 1 lakh people are expected to attend Modi's rally.
PM Modi will be the face of BJP's campaign in the city and the party feels the r
ally will help it build a momentum for the election.
As all high-profile leaders are expected at the venue on that day, safety is a p
rime concern for the BJP. Therefore, over 100 CCTV cameras have been put in plac
e.
At least a dozen metal detectors, X-ray machines and numerous barricades have al
so been placed at all strategic points.
BJP has been out of power in Delhi for the past 16 years and its Delhi chief Sat
ish Upadhyay said the party was confident of winning the polls with a clear majo
rity this time with the help of Modi's charisma.
Delhi has been under President's Rule since Arvind Kejriwal quit as the chief mi
nister on February 14, 2014 after being in office for 49 days.
The elections will be an opportunity for the resurgent BJP, which has been on a
winning streak under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in various A
ssembly polls since its spectacular success in the Lok Sabha polls last May, to
seek a clear verdict unlike the fractured decision of 2013 polls in Delhi.
The BJP, which had then faced the polls under Modi as the chief campaigner for t
he party, could not get a majority in Delhi unlike the stunning success it had s
cored in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh which also went to polls the
n.
The BJP, which made its debut in Delhi in the last polls in 2013, emerged the la
rgest party with 31 MLAs, followed by AAP which got 28 MLAs.

AAP managed to form a government with the support of Congress (8 MLAs) and JD(U)
(one) but Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal resigned in 49 days making it a shortlived government.
