ZB100F BLACK LIGHTTHE COOLEST

he MAGNAFLUX ZB100F is truly

the coolest and safest light on the
market. The built-in, quiet operating
fan substantially reduces the operating
temperature of the housing. The light
stays cool, even after long hours of operation. The typical running temperature
of the housing is less than 85 F compared to 180 F for most other lights.
The ZB100F is lightweight and well

balanced. The unit also incorporates

multi-voltage selection at 110v, 220v
and 240v. The MAGNAFLUX ZB100F, designed for use with fluorescent
dye penetrant and magnetic particle
inspection processes, generates and emits
ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 365
nanometers; the preferred wavelength for
NDT inspection.

WORKING FOR A SAFER WORLD

As part of a series to address safety in nondestructive testing, this issue of the Magnaflyer features safety in the use of blacklights. With the emergence of several high intensity blacklights in the market, we decided to review the blacklight requirements in fluorescent penetrant and magnetic particle inspection.

Part 2 of a Series: Ultraviolet Radiation Safety

t is important that blacklights are inspected

daily for cracked filters or leaks to make sure
that unfiltered radiation or harmful UV do not
pass through. Ultraviolet radiation covers the
spectral ranges of 315-400 nm (UV-A), 280315 nm (UV-B) and under 280 nm (UV-C).
Blacklight, the 365 nm wavelength used for
fluorescent penetrant and magnetic particle
inspection, causes minimal safety or health
concerns for operators provided
the correct filter is used on
the UV lamp. Proper
blacklight equipment has a
filter that cuts out all
harmful UV (below 320
nm) and allows only the UVA light to pass through.
Radiation below 320 nm is
normally associated with
erythema (red sore
skin) and keratoconjunctivitis (eye problems), and should not be
used for NDT applications.

Although exposure to UV radiation may

be a concern, it can be concluded, based
on a NIOSH (National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health) report, that
an inspector working in an inspection booth
using a blacklight would receive greater exposure from the suns radiation when sitting outside on a sunny day. Furthermore, inspectors
should be aware of their sensitivity to radiation
as individuals have different photosensitivity as
well as sensitivity to photosensitizing chemicals
(sunscreens, barrier creams, or medications).
The importance of having the proper blacklight cannot be understated. It should have
enough intensity at the correct wavelength to
allow detection of extremely fine indications.
Major specifications for penetrant and magnetic particle inspections require that blacklights
emit at least 1000 W/cm2 at the inspection
surface. Blacklight equipment and inspection
booths must have a low level of white light (less
than two foot-candles) so as not to interfere
with detection of fluorescent indications.

Proper design of blacklights is important to

meet the inspection requirements as well as
safety of the operators.
The following precautions need to be taken
when working with ultraviolet lamps:

Never look directly into an ultraviolet light

source.
Wear UV absorbing glasses for added protection.
Wear gloves and closely woven clothes to
minimize skin exposure.
Do not touch the area around the bulb.
Many ultraviolet lamps become very hot
and can cause burns.
Always check for broken filters or leaks
where unfiltered radiation can pass
through.
Bulbs contain trace amounts of mercury
and must be disposed of properly.

TOOL STEEL RING VS KETOS RING

he specification governing the manufacturing and testing of the Tool Steel

Ring is SAE AS5282.
Compared to the Ketos ring, the Tool Steel
Ring is a more reproducible quality control
tool. The Tool Steel Ring is annealed
according to specific guidelines in SAE
AS5282. Proper annealing to obtain the
correct hardness is the key to manufacturing
reproducible Tool Steel Rings. In the past,
improperly annealed Ketos rings showed
inconsistent results because of poorly
defined leakage fields at the ring holes.
MAGNAFLUX manufactures and certifies
the Tool Steel Ring (Part Number 159999)
according to SAE AS5282.
The daily magnetic particle
system performance
check required by
ASTM E 1444-01
may be performed with the
Tool Steel Ring
Specimen.

Penetrant Systems

What penetrant sensitivity level

should I use?

What is the minimum operating

temperature for MAGNAFLUX
penetrants in cold weather?

What safety factors should be considered when using black lights

that emit ultraviolet light?

Lower sensitivity penetrants are typically

used when the parts being tested have rough
surface finishes and the cracks being sought
are relatively large0.100" or bigger.

The penetrant material, the component

being tested and the ambient room temperature should be at least 40 F. If the test
component or the penetrant drop below
40 F, they should be moved into a heated
area and allowed to warm up to the minimum temperature.

When using a black light, there are three

main safety factors to consider. First, the
operator should always wear special safety
glasses for protection from UV exposure.
And dont look into the light!

Higher sensitivity penetrants (level 3 and 4)

are typically used for inspecting critical parts
that have smooth finishes and defects as
small as .020".

Freezing causes no permanent adverse effect

to the performance of penetrant material, as
long as the material is allowed to warm up
to at least 40 F before it is used.

You should always evaluate sensitivity levels

to determine which level will show
rejectable defects.

MAGNAFLUX aerosol can products may be

used in cold weather as long as the product
can be sprayed out of the aerosol container.

When using fluorescent penetrants, the sensitivity level is usually dictated by customer
specifications. However, here are some general guidelines regarding sensitivity levels.

Second, since the running temperature of

most black lights is about 180 F, operators
should avoid skin contact with housings
and lenses.
Third, make sure your electrical supply has
ground fault protection, especially if inspections are conducted in wet environments.
