Cause

This solution deals with the SymmWin / Enginuity limitation only.

Do not confuse this with the EMC QA specified limit on the maximum legal number of customer
accessible volumes (LUN addresses) allowed per SA or FA or SE port. Refer to the E-Lab
Navigator or EMC Support Matrix. For example, at 5567 and above, 256 LUNs (assignments) per
FA port is qualified (no RPQ required) for specific hosts. However, note that a single LUN or
address assignment can "represent" numerous Symmetrix Logical Volumes (i.e. a meta volume)
and there are Enginuity limit to the number of Symmetrix Volumes (Symm Vol #) that an SA or FA
or SE processor can manage.
The maximum number of devices (Symm Vols) that SymmWin will allow to be configured on an FA
or SA processor is 904 for 5266 and 5267 .
The maximum number of devices (Symm Vols) that SymmWin will allow to be configured on an FA
or SA processor is 2048 for 5566, 5567, 5568, 5669, 5670 and 5671.
The maximum number of devices (Symm Vols) that SymmWin will allow to be configured on an FA
processor is 4096 for 5771, 5772, 5773, 5874, 5875 and 5876.
Note also that the restriction is per processor (NOT per port). If one SA or FA or SE processor
services more than one port, logical volumes assigned to both ports count towards this total.
However, again we are counting logical volumes and NOT LUN addresses. If the same logical
volume (Symm Vol) is assigned (addressed) to two ports on the same SA or FA processor it only
counts once towards the above totals. So for example if you assign (address) Symm devices 40103F (4096 decimal devices) to SAF-7a port 0 and assign the same Symm devices 40-103F to
SAF-7a port 1 it will only count once towards the maximum of 4096 (decimal) assigned devices.

See example screen shots.

Note that Meta Volume members ALWAYS count towards this SymmWin / Enginuity limit:
Refer to Symmetrix Advanced Configuration Training or to the SSR Web
under Meta Volumes (although the maximum for 5266 and 5267 is stated as 994 decimal) for
more information. There is a 255 member limit on the number of members that a single meta
volume may contain (currently true at ALL Enginuity up to and including 5773). There is also a
HOST/OS limit to the maximum size of a single meta volume (i.e. number of meta
members multiplied by the individual meta member size) that a host can address as one LUN.
Even if the volumes are configured as Meta's with only the Meta heads assigned, SymmWin still
takes into account the number of meta members when calculating the total number of Symmetrix
logical volumes assigned to the FA or SA or SE. Although only the Meta heads are assigned to the
SA or FA or SE processor the above 904 or 2048 or 4096 Symmetrix device limits are correct.
Change

Using the Volumes Map in SymmWin to assign Meta Volumes to a SA or FA or SE port

Using the Volumes Map in SymmWin to assign non-meta Volumes to a SA or FA or SE port
Using symconfigure to map (meta or non-meta) Volumes to an SA or FA or SE port

Resolution

The ONLY way to workaround this Enginuity restriction is to split up the addresses and assign
them to different SA or FA or SE ports (i.e. to ensure that the logical volume limit per processor is
not reached).
Also refer to solution [Link Error:UrlName "6-0-12847443-2042745-Maximum-devices-toconfigure-on-an-FA-port" not found]

Notes

NOTE also that there is a bug in 5x67 which can give the INCORRECT count for the above
values. When SymmWin is calculating the total number of volumes it does not count the meta
members if the meta head started at Symm Vol 000. This particular bug had led to the incorrect
belief that LUN's are being counted when meta's are being created or added and that the
SymmWin check is for "too many LUN's". This is not the case. Refer to solution 26148 for full
details on this specific problem.
Refer to 12857 for "What is the maximum number of accessible logical devices per Symmetrix
DMX or VMAX array?"

Notes

When the -p value is specified, Solutions Enabler only looks at the mappings on this port
without cross-referencing the devices mapped to the other port on the FA, so the display is
only accurate from that port's point of view. This behavior is by design for Solutions
Enabler 7.0 or later.

To accurately view the number of available addresses for the FA ports, the symcfg list address -available command should be used without specifying a port value.

If a device is mapped to both port 0 and port 1, this only counts as a single mapped
device. In Solutions Enabler 6.5 and earlier, this could cause the symcfg list -address available to report a negative number of available LUN addresses. Refer to KB
article 46617 for more information.
For example, looking at Port 0:
