In MS word, a drawing canvas with Create your drawing here appears whenever you
start a new drawing.

If you dont like the canvas, you can uncheck the default setting of your computer. Select
Tool_Options_General, the following dialog box appears.

Uncheck

2. Drawing with Autoshapes_line _freeform

Click on freeformThe mouse turns into a
crosshair + ;
2.1 Click once to start an end point of a line
2.2 Drag the mouse ( do not hold down the
right click) to draw a line.
2.3 Click once to change the direction of the
line.
2.4 Double click to end the drawing.

Freeform

Practise to draw the following diagrams.

D3.

3. Drawing a circle or a square.

Click over rectangle icon (oval icon ) and the mouse

turns into a crosshair +, holds down the shift key to
ensure a square and a circle while drawing.
3.1 Hold down the mouse to denote the upper left

Rectangle

corner (the centre)of the square(the circle).

3.2 Drag down and drag toward right to expand the
square (the circle)while holding down the
mouse to increase the size of the square(circle)
3.3 Release the mouse to end the drawing.

Practise to draw the following diagrams.

Notice that in diagram D8, the inscribed triangle do not turn out to be a good one, you may always be
able to fine tune it by the edit point feature of the MS draw.

ICT and Teaching of Mathematics.

4. To improve or fine tune a drawn autoshapes.

4.1 Click on the imperfect inscribed triangle
(a drawn object) to highlight it, 8 small circles
surround the object ( the handles).
4.2 Right click the mouse, a pop up menu appears,
select Edit points.
4.3 The vertices of the drawn triangle turns into
small black squares.
4.4 When you move the mouse over the square,
it change into a , hold down and drag the point
to the desired places.

Practise to draw the following pairs of diagram.
D9.

D10.

4.5 You may add extra points or deleted a point when you are in the edit point mode,
Just place you mouse over a line and click to add extra point, drag to form another
side of a polygon. Highlight on the black point and right click to invoke the dialog box,
Select delete point to deleted the point.
Practise by modifying the previous diagrams.
D11.

D12.

4.6 While you are in the edit point mode, , left click and a
pop up menu for you to make other adjustments to the drawn
object. Experiment with the extra features in the dialog
box.. Try out on the effect of ,Add Point, Delete Segment and
Straight Segment.
4.7 When you use Autoshapes_line_Curve to draw, you
will get a curve at the point that you click.
Again you can use edit point to readjust the curvature
of a curve.

Click on the sector,

The sector will insert
into your document

5.3 Scroll down until you you see a

sector, place your mouse over the
sector and

click
as

on it, a shadowed sector appears

shown below.

5.4 While it is still highlighted, select the shadow style icon and click on No
shadow .

5.5 Adjust the yellow colour diamond shape handle to adjust the size of the angle of the
sector.

ICT and Teaching of Mathematics.

Practise to draw the following diagrams.

D16.

You may find that the marking of the angle of a sector is difficult to perform, refer to the following
section to adjust the size of the angular sector.
5.5 Proceed with right hand click on the mouse, a pop up menu appears, select
Format Autoshapes, make appropriate selection under tab of Colour and Lines and
Size as shown below.

The Lock aspect ratio will

ensure the copied object is enlarge or
shrink proportionally, thus still keeping
the shape.
5.6 To get an enlarged image of a
shape, engage this feature to enlarge it to
150% ( k =1.5) or 200 % (k=2)
Practise to draw diagram D17 below.
D17.

Tips : To have a better control over precision in object to object orientation :

1. Hold down Alt key while you move your object with the mouse.
2. Highlight the object and hold down Ctrl key and move the object with arrow key(nagging)

ICT and Teaching of Mathematics.

6. Drawing of a grid
6.1 Point your mouse to the rectangle icon and hold down the shift key to draw the first square of
desirable size.
6.2 Hold down the Ctrl key, move your mouse into the highlighted object ; the mouse turn into a
black cross + ; hold down the right hand mouse and drag to the right, the highlighted square is
duplicated !

6.3 You may now select the drawn squares either by

6.4 Repeat step 6.2 and 6.3 to generate a m x n grid.
6.5 Use Select Object to selected the drawn grid and select Draw_Group to group the m x n
grid into a single grid. It is convenient to move the grid and adjust the size of the grid
proportionally.
Practise to draw the following objects.

D19.

D20.

Diagram D20 have a different style of a line and the Arrow style of a line. The triangle is filled with
certain degree ( 27 %) of transparency such that the grid is visible under a triangle. These are the
format of an object.

7.4 Line Colour highlight an object and you can change the colour of the border.
7.5 Fill colour highlight an object and you can filled with different colour have a variety of
the fill patterns.
7.6 Shadow style also can be adjusted for a drawn object
7.7 3-D style of an object is another format of a drawn object
Explore and experiment with all the format mentioned above to adjust the appearance of diagram
D20.
Here are some examples of the diagram D20 in different format.

8. Labelling

8.1 Highlight the text box and drag to increase the size of a rectangular text box. A blinking
cursor is at the left hand corner of the text box. When you mouse move into the text box it
turns into an I- shaped cursor, you can just type into it.
8.2 If the text longer than the text box that it can be accommodated, the text disappears. You
may drag any of the side handles or the corners to expand the size of the text box.
8.3 You can highlight a text box right click the mouse to get a pop-up dialog to Format a text
box change the textbox- all internal margins to 0 such that it accommodate more text.

This is a text box

10. The layers or order of the drawn objects

MS word have a feature to rearrange the layers of the object, couple with the set transparent feature it
can be useful in drawing of Venn diagram and other 3-D object.
10.1 The following diagram illustrate the effect of layers.
