Deploying RFoG directly from headend

Gaining new customers is critical to generating new revenues. In many cable franchises,
there are pockets of very low-density areas where its too costly to service these potential
customers with traditional HFC architectures. Aurora Networks Radio Frequency over
Glass (RFoG) and Radio Frequency Passive Optical Network (RFPON) solutions provide
operators with a cost-effective fiber to the premises (FTTP) means to service these households. Auroras solutions:
Extend network reach via fiber to rural and low-density areas
Cost less to deploy than HFC in rural environments
Reduce maintenance and powering expenses
Enable operators to capture new revenue-generating subscribers

Auroras RFoG
Advantages
Extend network
to unserved areas
Enable route
redundancy

Advantages of RFoG
The RFoG solution enables cable operators to achieve the bandwidth gains of FTTP
without changes to standard equipment in the headend or home.
RFoG:
Delivers the same video, voice and data services as HFC networks
Uses the same back office and provisioning systems as HFC networks

Support low-cost
CPE technology

Leverages the installed base of set-tops, cable modems, and embedded

multimedia terminal adapters (eMTAs)

Support PON for

commercial services

Requires minimal new installation training

VHub Delivers Benefits

Aurora Networks pioneering VHub technology conquers the limitations of initial FTTP
implementations. When combined with Auroras Node PON module, it also provides a
smooth migration path to the all-IP network of the future our RFPON solution. Auroras
RFoG and RFPON technology enables cable operators to:
Reach new customers by cost-effectively extending plant, downstream and upstream
Eliminate costly fiber construction to new service areas
Leverage video, DOCSIS and voice investment by using existing headend
equipment and back-office systems for both RFoG and PON services
Upgrade network area-by-area, when and where needed
Deploy EPON for commercial and high-end residential customers over
ubiquitous network
Implement two upstream wavelengths, 1310 nm (lowest cost) and
1610 nm (future-proof) with EPON
Deploy alternate routing deep into the network, increasing the network availability
Overcome handling and restoration issues associated with large bundles of fiber

Aurora Networks VHub provides a fully operational

hub in a standard, weatherproof node housing. In
RFPON applications, it serves up to 256 subscribers
with one transport fiber. The VHub solution:
Enables long-distance route redundancy
Solves fiber limitations
Solves distance limitations
Supports RFoG and EPON
Supports AUROS DOCSIS provisioning

Future-Proof Networks
Because Auroras RFPON
solution adheres to the widely
deployed PON standard,
cable operators are well
positioned for the future.
Traditional RFoG implementations use the 1310
nm wavelength to carry
upstream traffic from subscribers. However, PON
standards require this wavelength for upstream data
communications.
To solve this potential conflict,
Auroras RFPON solution
transports traditional cable
TV services over 1550 nm
(downstream) and 1610 nm
(upstream). This wavelength
selection results in a futureproof solution. The wavelengths 1490 nm and 1310
nm are standard for GEPON
implementation.

CPE
Auroras RFoG CPEs enable cable operators
to extend service offerings over fiber into new
residential, business park and multiple-dwelling
unit (MDU) markets. This family of CPE devices
supports RFoG and standard PON-based
applications. Features include:
Indoor or outdoor mounting
RFoG-only configuration
RFoG + PON configuration
High-output power versions supporting
32 units in MDUs
OBI-free solution
