Chapter 1

The book Monarchies and nations: Globalization and identity in the Arab states of the Gulf by
Dresch and Piscatori written in 2005. It is an interesting book to read as it defines the impact of
globalization on the Arab world. The book denotes that the globalization has come up with
impacts such as a change of culture amid the Arab Tribes in the Gulf; this cuts across the entire
region hence bring a complete change of cultural issues.
For example, various media organization from Europe such as Time Warner, News Corporation
and Disney have come up with European culture of the media hence changing the traditional
culture of the Arab Media. The Authors denote that the proliferation of Arab-owned media firms
has also started operating and airing new using the Arabic Language. In addition, it is also
considered as an antidote to the cultural globalization.
The chapter draws on various approaches trying to figure out the possible solution to the case
of cultural imperialism. The approaches can define the merits and demerits of globalization of
Arab language as a result of media proliferation in the region. This can be viewed the way that
the authority of the countries in the Gulf can differentiate the roles played by the Gulf-owned as
well as the US-owned media companies. It elaborates the changes that these organizations have
to the people. The Gulf owned companies are limited to local news and current affairs. They lack
cross-border media information hence the dominance of the US-based firms which has varied
news pertaining to local and international news.
Chapter 2
The chapter states that there has been an issue with the advent of regionalization of the Gulf
States so that the region could have unified an agenda to compete effectively with other parts of
the world. The author states that the region is on the eve of transforming to this new changes, but
the problem is Dialect and national Identity of the people.
For example, the books show that the UAE come together to form a common state, this has led to
improvement in the countrys economy as well as the level of education. Unified higher
education has been developed such as the University of Bahrain amid others. However, the book
clearly indicates that this was possible because the people Emirates had a common stand and

interest to form a state with common good such as education and other. There is also the
unification of a broadcast media, which the entire region is using as they share a common dialect.
The difference in language has created a huge gap between the successes of having a unified
nation of the Gulf and its failures as depicted by the authors. In this chapter the influence of
dialect is considered as massive factor for success of the region and due to this together with
other issues, the region has never united. The impacts of language and national identify what the
author states vital in the transformation of culture.
