Graphs in Practical Situations

1. The following shows the conversion graph between American dollars (US$) and
Singapore dollars (S$) in 2010.

Use the graph to convert

(a) US$90 into S$,
(b) S$220 into US$,
(c) US$1750 into S$,
(d) S$1500 into US$.
2. The monthly income of a sales personnel consists of a basic salary and commission based
on the amount of sales made as illustrated by the graph shown below.

Use the graph to find

(a) the basic salary of the sales personnel,
(b) his monthly income when his sales is $25000,
(c) the amount of sales made when his total income is $1750.
3. The following shows the travel graphs of a car and a bus on their journey from Town A to
Town B.

(a) Find the average speed of the car and the bus in km/h.
(b) Which vehicle reached Town B first and what was the time elapsed before the other
vehicle arrived?
(c) During the journey from Town A to Town B, the driver of the car stopped for a rear.
How long did he stop?
(d) Find the greatest speed attained by the car during its journey.
(e) What time did the car overtake the bus?
4. Two towns H and K are 50 km apart. A cyclist P leaves H at 10 a.m. to travel to K. He
rides at 20 km/h for 1 hours, rests for 15 minutes and continues his journey at 15 km/h.
Another cyclist Q leaves K for Q at 10.30 a.m. and rides at a constant speed of 25 km/h.
Using a scale of 4 cm to represent 1 hour on the horizontal axis and 2 cm to represent 10
km on the vertical axis, draw the travels graphs of the two cyclists and use your graph to
find the
(a) time when P reaches K,
(b) time when P and Q pass each other and the distance they are from H.

5. The diagram shows the speed-time graph of a car. The car accelerates at a constant rate
from a speed of 20 m/s to a speed of 60 m/s in 20 seconds. The car then travels at a
constant speed of 60 m/s for the next 30 seconds. After that, it decelerates at a rate of 2
m/s2 before coming to a stop at time T seconds. Find the
(a) speed of the car when t = 10,
(b) value of T,
(c) distance travelled in 1 minute.
(d) On the axes in the answer space below, sketch the corresponding distance-time graph
of the car.

Answer: (d)

6. A car travels at a constant speed

of 50 m/s for the first 20 seconds.
It accelerates uniformly to a
speed of 80 m/s before coming to
a stop at t = 70.
(a) Calculate the value of the
acceleration in m/s2.
(b) Calculate the average speed
of the car for the entire
journey.
(c) On the axes in the answer space below, sketch the corresponding distance-time graph
of the car.

7. The diagram shows the speed-time graph of an object over a period of 120 seconds.

(a) Find the acceleration of the car during the first 20 seconds.
(b) How long will the car take to cover a distance of 1.5 km?
(c) Sketch the corresponding distance-time graph of the object in the answer space below.

8. The following graph shows the weekly wages of a factory worker. The wages consists of
a basic weekly salary for which the worker is expected to work a minimum of 40 hours in
a week and an overtime salary if he works for more than 40 hours in a week.

(a) What is his basic weekly salary?

(b) How much is his overtime salary if he works for an additional 13 hours in a week?
(c) If the worker earns $800 in a week, how many hours of overtime would he have
worked in that week?
(d) What is the overtime rate if the worker works for 50 hours?
9. The graph shows the charges for renting a car to travel x km in a week. John rented a car
from the company.

(a) How much must John pay if he travelled 385 km?

(b) How much must John pay if he travelled 700 km?
(c) Find the distance covered by John if he paid $500 for renting the car.

10. The graph shows the charges of two taxi companies.

(a) John travelled 6 km in a taxi operated by company X. How much must he pay?
(b) Ali wants to travel 6 km.
(i)

Which taxi company should he select?

(ii)

How much can he save by choosing the cheaper taxi company?

(c) State the flag down charges of each taxi company.

(d) For what distance would it make no difference in the fares to be paid to either taxi
companies?
