Change is inevitable, and this is particularly true in todays government IT services market. As new challenges continue
to arise, Pragmatics is proactively making strategic changes and investments to remain adaptable, competitive, and
forward-focused.
For example, we are investing in our business intelligence and wireless networking capabilities as areas of future
growth. We also continue to refine our business development and capture processes by adding greater rigor. We
have held several classes in proposal writing and review and have added these classes to Pragmatics University on
SkillPort, where they are available to all employees.
Dr. Kim Nguyen
Chief Business
Development Officer

Our executive team is always looking for ways to make Pragmatics a better company and to best meet the needs of our
clients. We have excellent processes and tools in place, but we can and will do more to ensure continued growth
and greater improvement in all aspects of our business while maintaining the outstanding client satisfaction scores
we recently received in a survey conducted by an independent firm. And our focus on client satisfaction, process
improvement, and community engagement are core values that underlie everything we do as a company.
What can you do? Raise the bar: ask yourself how you can do better, bring the greatest value to the client, and
help them solve their future challenges. Go the extra distance: remain focused on collaboration, innovation, strong
teamwork, and enthusiasm. Continue to look for opportunities where we can provide new services to our clients. Look
for the gap between what we and our competitors provide we want to identify and fill that gap.
I remain excited about the future and about how we can continue to deliver outstanding service and greater efficiencies
to our clients. With your help and support, we will do it!

Pragmatics Names Sean Cohan Vice President, TSG

Pragmatics issued a press release on April 2
announcing the appointment of Sean Cohan
as Vice President of the Technology Solutions
Group (TSG). In this role, Cohan provides
oversight and direction for Pragmatics
corporate subject matter experts and the
delivery of consulting services across the
company and in support of clients. He reports
to Chief Operating Officer Joe Brock.
Cohan previously served as a technical
director in the Pragmatics Defense and
Intelligence Solutions Division. His more
than 25 years of experience in software
development was instrumental in Pragmatics

attainment of CMMI Maturity Level 5, as well as in the development of

Pragmatic Agility, our proprietary methodology which combines agile
development with CMMI Level 5 practices.
Cohan joined Pragmatics in 2004 as a software architect and has since held
increasingly responsible positions, including senior technical consultant.
During that time, he led numerous initiatives that resulted in the improved
delivery of software solutions and contributed to Pragmatics growth.
Prior to joining Pragmatics, Cohan served as a technical consultant for
companies such as Texas Instruments, SITEL Technology Services, and
NASD Regulations, Inc.

Amber and Michelle Cohan, COO Joe Brock, and CEO Dr. Long Nguyen
join in a toast to Sean Cohan (center).
On April 23, Sean Cohan was honored with a reception in recognition of his

about the significance of the occasion.

Brock said, I am extremely pleased to make this announcement. Sean

Cohans wealth of experience in software development and information
technology systems engineering for a broad range of government customers
make him a natural choice to lead TSG. He is an excellent addition to the
Pragmatics executive team, and we look forward to the innovative solutions
and strong leadership he will bring to TSG.

PragmaticSERVES Supports Food for Others

From March 17 through April 4, Pragmatics held a food drive to benefit
Food for Others, a nonprofit organization that distributes food to families in
need in northern Virginia.
Pragmatics employees donated an impressive 898 pounds of food
(as well as a cash donation) to the organization. This was one of the
largest donations they have received recently, and the donations will help
unemployed and low-income families.
PragmaticSERVES thanks everyone who donated so generously to this great
cause. To donate to or learn more about Food for Others, visit their website at:

resource offers you the ability to control your
learning seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
We recently renewed our partnership with
Skillsoft for the next three years, and weve
updated our content. We now have more than
1,400 courses, 1,600 books, and 2,000 videos
from which you can choose.
Pragmatics University SkillPort 8 will be
available on June 6. The upgrade will provide
a new, easier-to-use interface and remove the
existing requirement for a Java browser plugin requirement for most contents. The system
will be easier for you to access.
Keep an eye on your Pragmatics email for
additional announcements regarding this
upgrade.

Pragmatics Hosts Fifth Take Your Child To Work Day

On April 24, Pragmatics held its fifth Take Your Child to Work Day at Reston
headquarters. Twelve children, aged four to 15, participated.
Take Your Child to Work Day is a nationally recognized event designed to give
children insight into their parents careers and workplaces. The day promotes a
strong work ethic and respect for work-life balance.
The event kicked off with breakfast and a presentation by CBDO Dr. Kim Nguyen,
who talked to the children about the important work their Pragmatics parents do
every day. Praggy the Panther, the Pragmatics mascot, made a special visit and
posed for photos with the children. Pragmatics Rapid Integration Test Environment
(RITE) Lab Manager Alex Lyon gave the children a tour of the lab, describing the
components, what they are used for, and how the company utilizes the lab for our
work with clients.

a safe environment to improve their speaking and leadership skills.
There is no pressure; everyone learns to give effective and inspiring
speeches at their own pace. Even if you do not engage in public
speaking for your job or personal life, you will always encounter
impromptu conversations that can turn into exciting opportunities. In
Toastmasters you can develop the skills needed to conduct an intelligent
conversation, including learning to be an effective listener and ridding
your speeches and conversations of words like um and uh, awkward

Employee Spotlight
Im Anne Noznisky, and Im just a few months
short of ten years with Pragmatics. I have been
working on site at the Office of the Comptroller
of the Currency (OCC) for the entirety of my
tenure. I am fortunate to be part of the dedicated
software development team at OCC.
This team includes developers, testers,
analysts, system architects, and database
administrators.
Being a member of this
software team is the primary reason I have
remained in my position for such a long time.
My background was in science and health
Anne Noznisky
care, and I could not have imagined working
in other disciplines, but I decided that it was
time to explore an unfamiliar area. Im happy
I changed course. In addition to learning more about the government and
bank regulation, working at Pragmatics has afforded me excellent training
opportunities. I recently received Scrum Master certification, and I have
taken advantage of a few online training courses as well.

Michelle Geddes, New Director of HR

Pragmatics extends a warm welcome to Michelle
Geddes, who joined the company on April 21 as
Director of Human Resources. Geddes has more
than 20 years of expertise in competencies including
talent acquisition and retention, performance
management, policy and procedure design, training
and development, and employee relations. She will
provide oversight for corporate security and training
in addition to human resources activities, and she is
a great addition to the corporate management team.

I began working at Pragmatics in the summer of 2004 as a reports developer,

which is the job I still hold today. Having at some point admitted to being
experienced in Visual Basic and MS Access, I have been pulled from
reporting into maintaining some legacy applications on several occasions.
Ive always managed to return to reporting.
At OCC our reporting team supports Supervisory Information System (SIS)
Reports, a suite of reports used by bank examiners and analysts. We create
reports for several OCC examiner applications written and maintained by
Pragmatics, including ExaminerView, which is the application used by
examiners for bank assessment input, and other applications, such as
those used for scheduling examiner work assignments
The technologies and development tools have changed over the past 10
years. We have migrated the reports from an older platform to a Microsoft
report server, and we have automated many routine tasks. The role
of report developer demands a significant amount of data analysis and
knowledge of OCC business rules. After 10 years, you cant help but
absorb some of these rules and attain in-depth knowledge of the data!

Pragmatics in the News

On April 2, Pragmatics issued a press release announcing the appointment
of Sean Cohan as Vice President of the Technology Solutions Group (see
the article on page 4). Washington Business Journal, Citybizlist, and
Washington Technology featured mentions of this news.
Washington Business Journal included Pragmatics on its April 4 list of
largest Government Technology Contractors. Pragmatics was ranked at
number 26 on the list.

Geddes previously served as Director of Human

Resources and Administration for ProSol. She has
a masters degree from American University and a
bachelors degree from Marymount University.

Staying Safe and Secure on Social Media

Social media is a fun way to connect with friends and family. Its an easy
way to share pictures and life events.
Although social media is fun, many people use it for criminal purposes.
You might wonder how someone could benefit from hacking an account,
other than posting something embarrassing.
If a hacker can get into your Facebook or other social media account, they
can post links that contain malware and viruses. This is why it is important
to question the validity of links before you click on them. Ask yourself,
Would my friend post this? Does this sound like a real website? Does this
post look like an ad? Does this URL look correct? If you think the post is
suspicious, dont click on it. Ask your friend if they posted the link or if their
social media account has been hacked.
Hackers cannot only post malware on your page, they can also find out all
information youve made private, such as your full name, birthday, family
information, phone number, and where you live. This information can be
used to steal your identity and open credit cards in your name. If you
havent made this information private, you should.
Here are some tips to make it harder for someone to steal your identity and
information from your social media:

Dont put your phone number on your page. People can contact you
through direct messages or ask you for your number if they need it.
Make sure you actually know the people from whom you accept
friend requests. Just because you might have an acquaintance in
common doesnt make the requester trustworthy, and accepting a
friend request from a stranger allows them to learn more about you.

Have a privacy setting that enables only your friends to see your full
profile.

Dont post the city or town you live in. Instead, post a generalized area
(e.g., instead of saying Reston, Va., say you live in the D.C. area).

Do not post a picture of your home with a visible house number. Even if
you cant read the numbers, there are programs and software that can
enhance the picture enough for the numbers to be legible. If you have
already posted where you live, even just the city or town, and a picture
of the front of your home, someone can find your address.

Have secure login information. Make sure your password and username
are not something people can guess. If your profile notes that you are a
Redskins fan, do not use the password skinzfan. Do not have the email
address you use to sign in displayed on your profile (it is half of your login
information). Do not use the same login information for everything. If
someone gets the login information for your social media and you have the
same login information for everything, that means they can get into your
e-mail, your online bank account, and all other sites where you log in with
that information.
Spyware and malware can be hidden in advertisements, games, and thirdparty apps on social media. Think before you click on ads and apps; the
companies are not vetted before they put their ads and products on the
site. Third-party apps and games can also spy on you and steal your
information. Read the terms and conditions of the apps and games you
have on your social media. Many of the third-party apps terms of use note
they need to have access to the information in your account. They can
then sell your information to other companies or use it themselves.
When it comes to social media, be aware that sometimes less is more. Be
careful how you use it.

Michael Mauldwin Participates in Triathlon for Green Beret

Many of us enjoy swimming, biking, or
running, but few of us consider doing
more than one of these in succession,
not to mention all three. However,
Pragmatics Michael Mauldwin decided
to do just that to honor fellow Green
Berets who have been killed in combat.
Mauldwin (known as Crusty during his
service days) took on the challenge of getting donations for the Green
Beret Foundation. He retired from the Green Beret in October 2009 after
a 27-year career. Most of his time was spent in a Special Forces group in
Afghanistan and Iraq.
Prior to retiring, he endured nine major surgeries, including six
facial reconstructive procedures, a right shoulder reconstruction,
and disc replacement. He was diagnosed with a number of traumatic
injuries, and the Veterans Administration ultimately rated him as 90 percent
disabled.
Since 2002, 27 fellow Green Berets, whom he remembers as friends and
brothers, have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2013 he decided to
honor these men by undertaking a self-imposed challenge that tested him
physically and befitted the memory of his comrades.

He will complete his mission, as he refers to it, when he crosses the finish
line on October 25. The event will include a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike
ride, and a full marathon of 26.2 miles. Unlike the half-Ironman, which had a
nine-hour cutoff, athletes have just 17 hours to cross the Ironman finish line.
Pragmatics is a sponsor for Mauldwin, and he is accepting more sponsors.
All donations go directly to the Green Beret Foundation. I am dedicating my
Ironman completion to the brothers that I have lost, along with the countless
others who have been injured or killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, and to the
families who have lost husbands, fathers, and sons.
If you would like to sponsor Michael Mauldwin as he begins his final push
to the B2B Ironman finish line, you can contribute to the Green Beret
Foundation at:
w w w. f i r s t g i v i n g . c o m / f u n d r a i s e r / G r e e n _ B e r e t _ M e m o r i a l /
greenberetironmantriathlonb2b
All donations are tax deductible and directly support the American Green
Beret. You can follow Mauldwins progress on his Green Beret Memorial
Facebook site (https://www.facebook.com/FHMI2013).

Mauldwins goal for 2013 was to complete the PPD Beach 2 Battleship
(B2B) Half Ironman Triathlon. Between June and October, his supporters
donated nearly $2,000 for the Green Beret Foundation. On October 26,
2013, following a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile halfmarathon along cobblestone roadwork in Wilmington, N.C., he crossed the
finish line in seven hours and 19 minutes. During the awards ceremony,
Mauldwin was surprised when his name was called. He received the
second-place award in the Para-Triathlete Division.
Training for the October 2014 B2B Ironman takes considerable time.
Mauldwin will train approximately five to six days a week, putting in 12-16
hours per week the first four months, 16-19 hours per week through midAugust, and then tapering his training prior to the event.

Security Corner

Accomplishments

A security policy is only as good as the

employees who follow it. A recent study on
data breaches reveals many employees fail
to adhere to security policies from a lack of
understanding and poor communications
from their security departments. Another
study found that more than half (54
percent) of employees dont always follow
their companys security policies, leaving
the security of sensitive data at heightened
risk.
While technology is one aspect of information
security, the real challenge is managing the
human side. Today there are more threats,
Rick Wilmoth
vulnerabilities, portable storage devices, and
CFSO
increased mobility than ever. This means
educating employees about security is more difficult, demanding, and
necessary.
U.S. technology is targeted by foreign nations; it is less expensive to use
existing technology than it is to develop something new. This technology
threat pertains to classified, sensitive, protected, company proprietary,
and other unclassified protected information.
How do we make sure Pragmatics and our customers information assets
are protected? The first line of defense is employee awareness the
critical human-ware component of our information security armor. While
our formal security policies have their place, they have little value unless
employees understand their responsibilities and the rationale behind our
rules.

Kori Green, ITIL Strategist on a Department of

State contract, spends some of his free time
coaching indoor track and field for Frederick
Douglass High School in Maryland. Greens

in the Prince Georges County Indoor Track
and Field Championships.
Green noted
that he was extremely proud of his team.
