Objectives
-

to develop skills in creating and interpreting graphical representations of mechanical

devices according to the formal rules set by the International Organization for
Standardization, the ISO2,

to develop an understanding of the relationships between the ISO standards based

graphical representations of mechanical devices and the main constraints of the
mechanical design process: strength, manufacturing, material and cost,

to develop skills in the graphical communication of mechanical design using both free
hand drawing and computer aided design (CAD) software.

Topics
1. Introduction
Design definition,
Product life cycle,
Mechanical design
2. Brief coverage of multidisciplinary aspects of mechanical design
Strength
Manufacturing
Materials
Cost
3. Mechanical design graphics based on ISO standards
Preferred numbers
Basic elements of mechanical design drawing
Dimensioning and geometrical tolerancing
Assembly drawings
Graphical presentation of typical machine elements

4. Reverse engineering graphical design project

ANSI standards are discussed in ME 2C04

Class organization:
The MDGC course material will be presented during the lectures on Mondays in MDCL/1309
and during the whole class tutorials on Tuesdays in HH/109, commencing on Sept. 9th. The
sectional tutorials/consultations are scheduled at different times and rooms as listed on the
combined lectures and lab/tutorials schedule above. The CAD lab in JHE/219A with the Autodesk
Inventor CAD software is reserved for students enrolled in ME 2A03, on Mondays between
13:30-14:20 and on Tuesdays 9:30 - 14:30, if needed3. A free copy of Autodesk Inventor is
available for downloading from the Autodesk website at
http://students.autodesk.com/?nd=download_center.

Students who have their own CAD software other than Autodesk Inventor may use it in this
course as long as the software provides the functionality needed to complete the required
course work.
The students work in the MDGC module of the course will be evaluated based on four
components:
1. Assignments
2. Design project
3. Test
4. Design portfolio
The assignments will deal directly with the key elements of the material presented during
classes. The assignments will be announced during the whole class tutorials on Tuesdays. Most
of the assignments will take the form of creating simple mechanical design drawings, either by

The computers in the CAD lab in JHE/219A provide the CAD software only. The students are responsible for
providing their own external USB storage this means separate self-contained project file storage and backup
media.

hand or using CAD. Participation in the classes will make the completion of the assignments
quick and simple. Assignments 1-5 are to be completed over a four week cycle:
Week 1 - the assignment is given,
Week 2 - assignments are submitted, during the tutorial, to the section TA for marking,
Week 3 - assignments with the pending marks requiring corrections are returned by
the TA during the tutorial, for correcting,
Week 4 - corrected assignments are collected during the tutorial by the TA for
recording the permanent mark.
The corrected assignment must consist of the original work with marked errors and a separate
sheet with all errors indicated by the TA, corrected. Missing or Incomplete corrections will not
change the status of the mark. A complete correction of the errors will reduce the penalty for
errors by 50%. The re-submitted revised work will be kept as the course records and will not
be returned to the students. However, the students should retain copies of the original or
revised work for their own records and as a part of their design portfolio.
The mark for the assignment will be zero if the correction of the errors has not been
submitted by the deadline during sectional tutorial session.
All sheets of MDGC assignments must be stapled, and the drawings should have formal title
blocks, frames and, in addition to the student name and ID, a clear indication of the tutorial
section, i.e. L01 ... L04.

The design project is to be completed by each student individually using CAD over several
weeks. The core of the design project is the formal, ISO standard compliant, graphical design
documentation for a reversely engineered simple mechanical device. The design
documentation should include the assembly drawing, bill of materials, (BOM), and the
detailed drawings of the components, with dimensions, manufacturing tolerances and the
specification of materials. Additional information regarding the design project and assignment
of student ID based individual dimensional parameters of the device will be presented during
lectures.
In addition to the formal ISO standard compliant graphical design documentation the students
will be required to create and submit with the design report an advertisement page depicting
and emphasizing the attractive features of their design solution aimed at the potential
customers.
All design project document and the original CAD project files must be submitted on the due
date in a sealed envelope labelled with the student name, course, tutorial section and the
name of the TA supervising the tutorial section. The package must contain printed copies of
the required drawings and a labelled CD or USB memory stick with the original CAD project
files and source files for all printed text and image pages. Projects submitted without the
electronic copies of the sources will not be accepted for marking. The projects documents will
be retained by the MDGC instructor Dr. M.P. Sklad for a period of six months.
The design portfolio is a folder with the MDGC course work, notes, copies of the CAD
assignments, and a copy of the design project should to be maintained by each student
enrolled in the course. The students are advised to keep the design portfolio folder as a
reference and for inclusion of further design documents generated during subsequent design
courses, ME 2C03, ME 3E05 and ME 4M06.
Test:
A one-hour final test of the MDGC component of the course will be held at the end of MDGC
session. The focus of the test will be ISO standard compliant mechanical design graphical
communication (MDGC). The test will involve hand sketching.
Missed work and/or missed deadlines:
All requests for an alternative course of action must be submitted using the McMaster Student
Absence Form (MSAF). Use of the MSAF form as an accommodation for a missed assignment
will automatically result in the marks allocated for that assignment being shifted to the Final
Test. The work on the CAD design project, which is extending over several weeks, cannot be
substituted with assignments and it cannot be substituted with a test. The limits set by the
MSAF regulations regarding missed work apply to the course as a whole.

Grading:
The contribution of the MDGC course work to the total mark for the course will be calculated
according to the following scheme:

Project
Portfolio/progress

12%
10%
38% (3% progress report, 35% submitted project)
up to 3% bonus marks for MDGC component awarded at the
discretion of the TAs.

_______________
Total max.
60% (+0 to 3% bonus)

A passing mark on the test (minimum 50% of the test score) is required for passing the MDGC component of
