BIOGRAPHY
CURRICULUM VITAE
Born in Buenos Aires, Studies at the School of Fine Arts. Lives in Buenos Aires until 1967, then traveled to Paris
with a scholarship from the French government. From 1969 to 1970 lives and works in New York. From 1970 to
1975, lives and works in London, from 1975 to 1999 lived in Paris. She currently lives in Buenos Aires and Paris.
Since her start in the forefront of the 60 in the Di Tella Institute, she introduces the language of fashion in art to
make it a central element of her work. In 1967 with Paul Mesejean, she receives Braque Prize scholarship from
the French government. From the 70s, she created images for the cover of Vogue English and her work is
documented in art books and fashion respectively. In 1971 she created a clothing brand Paul and Delia. Delia
Cancela studies the the total journey of women.
Dedicated entirely to fashion, in later years she reconciles with painting. One of her signature styles is hairstyle
in her paintings: ruffled hair and elevation, long hair running down to the ground, which until today are present in
her works. The erotic world travel of women is an essential element in the work of Delia Cancela. Her work can
be summarized as: femininity.
In 2000 she was nominated for Jorge Romero Brest (career award) Award from the Argentina Association of Art
Critics. In 2001 the she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Endowment for the Arts and
a tribute Judith Clark Gallery in London for her life in that city.

Although initially, Delia worked alone as an artist , taking part in exibitions New Art from Argentina at the ITDT,
at The Walker Art Center Minneapolis, Atlanta , Georgia and Texas.

From 1965 Pablo Mesejean and Delia Cancela, joined forces and worked together until well into the 1980s.
In 1965 they show their first solo exibitionLove & Lifeat the Lirolay gallery, in wich in an ambience of flowers
and astronauts, hostesses wearing vinyl dresses welcomed the visitors and gave them coloured sunglasses with
apliquee flowers.

In 1966 they were awarded The Braque Prize, a grant from the French Gouvernement , and travel to Paris in
1967 where they stay a year.
1966

In 1967 they took part in the Visual Experiences of 67 in the Arts Center ITDT.
For: Visual Experiences 68 in the Arts Center ITDT they create a ficticius magazine with images and a single
text wich they sold at the exibition.
In 1968 they made their first fashion show called Clothes at Risk in the Art Center of the ITDT.where the public
was mixed with the models.
1969 they travelled to New York, where their works were featured in the fashion magazines Vogue and Harpers
Bazaar, they stayed there for a year.
1970 they move to London, where they lived until 1975. . Fashion becomes a medium of expression that make
forget the functionality of the piece, the synergie betwen art and fashion become more pronounced as they
started to work in the world of fashion design, in 1970 they launched their own label Pablo & Delia, they worked
as artistic directors for Vogue covers, and beauty pictures,and their work was first presented in Vogue with the
title Whats Underground and Up in the Clouds ? , Pablo & Delia and their Caricature Clothes, In the article they
said Art mistyfication is finished, we dont like artist categories their creations were also featured in Harpers
Queen, Nova, The Sunday Times, among others. The magazine became for them a catalogue to show their
work. A fashion concept which affect the total image, not only the clothes.
In 1975 they moved to Paris where they continue working with the name Pablo and Delia, the influence of the
nature reached his peak in the flowers dresses, the tulip skirts, and the petals shoulders all them constructed
with an organic cut, they presented their collections with shows as performances with models, actors and
dancers, until in 1980,when they stop their collaboration with a show Think Sharp in white and black, red blood
and bleu sky colors, sharp images, knifes and daggers as accesories.
From 1981, Delia continues working as an artist as a fashion designer an illustrator, and teaching.
In 1984 shows Fashion Deligths a series of portraits, At the 2e Bureau in Paris.

In Delia Cancela -2000 a retrospective show of her work , she also presented a film of her performance ,done
in the same year Cut and Sew the making , with the help of 18 fashion design students, of a gaze fabric dress
of 6mts hig x 4,50 mts wide,cover with fresh petals of flowers from the trees around the Art Center, CCPE,
Rosario.

Goi the curator, wrote for the catalogue :the paintings comes to life in the clothes. The idea is complete..
Pablo & Delia broke the mould but invented their own.This mould has many components that went from a
classically romantic image to a completely innovate one.
