Evenifwewanttoactassertively,wemaynotbeabletoifwedonotrecognisethedifferenceinstylesof
communication.Forinstance,aggressivebehaviourissometimesmisidentifiedasbeingassertive.Itis
importantforustobeabletocorrectlyidentifyourownandothersstylesofcommunication.Thereshouldbe
aconsistentmessagesentinyourverbalandnonverbalcommunication;forexampleevenifyourwordsare
assertive(Idonotlikeitwhenyoudothat),yourbodylanguageandothernonverbalcuesmaybepassive
oraggressive(headdown,softvoice;orloudangryvoice,clenchedfists).Ifyouaresendingmixedsignalsin
thiswayitmayunderminetheeffectivenessofyourassertivemessage.Beingawareofthecharacteristicsofthe
differentstyleswillalsohelpyoubetterchoosehowtorespondtoanotherpersonscommunicationwithyou.

Itisimportanttorealisethedifferentstylesofcommunicationhavetheirbenefitsaswellascosts.Evenbeing
assertivecomeswithacostforinstance,peoplemayhavebecomeaccustomedtoyouactinginapassiveway,
andsoarenotwillingorhappytodealwithyoubeingassertiveandmayresistyoureffortstochangeyour
styleofcommunication.

Definition:
