High Performance Alloys Profile

Formed in 1984, to specialize in quick deliveries and small quantities. We also offer our services to
quantities that are larger (around 1000 pounds,) and will estimate for deliveries through our large network of
mills for even larger needs. HPA represents several fine mills throughout the world, such as: Haynes
International, Krupp VDM, Teledyne Allegheny Ludlum/Jessop, Special Metals, Huntington Alloys, Carpenter
Technology, Bohler, Deutsche Nickel, Foroni, Valbruna, Crucible, Dunkirk, Universal and Electralloy.
HPA is also a secondary producer of these alloys, as well as a number of other alloys. Most to all of the
production is performed at our Tipton facility. From forging to rolling, and finishing. Our concentration has
been on production or toll processing of Alloys that contain a high concentration of Nickel, Cobalt,
Molybdenum, Chromium, Tantalum, or Titanium.
In general, we supply NITRONIC, HASTELLOY, INCONEL, STELLITE, and MONEL in various sizes of bar,
wire, sheet, plate and fasteners.
Metals Service Center
Multiple saw types available to readily cut bars to multiple lengths (MULTS). A piece can be cut from the
sheet or plate using a shear or CNC plasma. We also offer secondary processes such as rough machining,
and even light fabricating. Our lead times for machining and grinding are dependant on how much material
is being quoted. Small to medium orders are welcome. Special size or temper required? We have production
capabilities in-house to produce bars, plates, sheets and forgings to many tempers, and sizes all on an as
needed basis.
Secondary Producer
A GFM 412 Rotary Forge was installed in 1995. A 2 high rolling mill was installed in 2001, and a 750 ton
forge press has been installed in 2007. We specialize in making available the sizes and alloys that are not
common, not produced yet, or too small of a quantity that a larger mill will not produce!
We use out 2 high rolling mill to produce small bars, hex, narrow flats, and rectangular. These products are
primarily cold finished, and hot or warm rolled when necessary.
The 750 ton forging press makes squares, rounds, upsets and planished forgings. Working bed is 14 x 36
wide, allowing many possibilities of products from under 50 lbs up to 3000 lb piece weights.
Production of Special Metals
As a secondary producer, we also specialize in small quantities. By serving this niche market, we help our
mills with developmental alloys and also our customers - by making that size or alloy available in a short
amount of time, without having to purchase a heat lot quantity. Many projects only require a small amount to
evaluate a material for process / application suitability.

Nickel 201 can be hot formed to almost any shape. The temperature range 1200F to 2250F is
recommended and should be carefully abided as the proper temperature is the most important factor in
achieving hot malleability. Full information of the forming process should be sought and understood before
proceeding.
Nickel 201 is the low carbon version of Nickel 200. It is preferred to Nickel 200 for applications involving
exposure to temperatures above 600F. With low base hardness and lower work-hardening rate, it is
particularly suited for cold forming. Nickel 201 can be cold formed by all conventional methods, but because
nickel alloys have greater stiffness than stainless steels more power is required to perform the operations.

NITRONIC 60 (Alloy 218) Fe 63, Cr 17, Mn 8, Ni 8.5, Si 4, N 0.13 (UNS S21800)

Austenitic Stainless
Nitronic 60 is truly an all purpose metal. This fully austenitic alloy was originally designed as a wear alloy,
and subsequently has good high temperature properties for temperatures around 1800F. The oxidation
resistance of Nitronic 60 is similar to Type 309 S.S., and far superior to Type 304S.S.
The additions of Silicon and Manganese have given this alloy a matrix to inhibit wear, galling, and fretting
even in the annealed condition. Higher strengths are attainable through cold working the material and are
still fully austenitic after severe cold-working. This working does not enhance the anti-galling properties as is
normal for carbon steels and some stainless steels. The benefit to the cold or hot work put into the material
is added strength and hardness, and the wear resistance does not decrease noticeably. Chromium and
Nickel additions give it comparable corrosion to 304 and 316 stainless steels, while having approximately
twice the yield strength. The high mechanical strength in annealed parts permits use of reduced cross
sections for weight, and cost reductions through the use of thinner stock.
Several data sheets are available on the wear compatibility of this alloy with dissimilar couples, as well as
self-mated coupled results. Call or email for your own booklet!
If youre galling problem occurs at less than 1500F, then you should think about switching to this alloy.
Nitronic 60 has a better cost advantage than any other alloy available. Other materials require an additional
amount of heat treating to raise their hardness, where NITRONIC 60 is excellent in the annealed condition.
Characteristics
Corrosion Properties
The corrosion resistance of Armco NITRONIC 60 Stainless Steel falls between that of types 304 and 316.
However, experience shows that in a wear system, a galling or seizure failure occurs first, followed by
dimensional loss due to wear, and finally corrosion. Galling and wear must be the first concerns of the
design engineer. Although the general corrosion resistance of NITRONIC 60 is not quite as good as Type
316, it does offer better chloride pitting resistance, stress corrosion cracking resistance and crevice

corrosion resistance than Type 316 in laboratory conditions. Corrosion tests are not normally performed with
NITRONIC 60 High Strength.
Corrosion Resistance
Nitronic 60s uniform corrosion resistance is better than 304 stainless in most environments. The yield
strength of Nitronic 60 is nearly twice that of 304 and 316 stainless steels. Chloride pitting resistance is
superior to that of type 316 stainless; Nitronic 60 provides excellent high temperature oxidation resistance
and low temperature impact.
Applications using Nitronic 60 are valve stems, seats, and trim, fastening systems, screening, pins, bushings
and roller bearings, pump shafts and rings. Other uses include wear plates, rails guides, and bridge pins.
Applications

Automotive valves - can withstand gas temperatures of up to 1500F for a minimum of 50,000
miles.
Fastener galling - capable of frequent assembly and disassembly, allowing more use of the
fastener before the threads are torn up, also helps to eliminate corroded or frozen fasteners.
Pins - Used in roller prosthetics & chains to ensure a better fit of parts (closer tolerance, nonlubricated) and longer lasting.
Marine shafts - better corrosion than types 304 and 316, with double the yield strength.
Pin and hanger expansion joints for bridges - better corrosion, galling-resistance, low temperature
toughness, & high charpy values at sub-zero temps compared to the A36 and A588 carbon steels
commonly used.

Austenitic Stainless
NITRONIC 50 Stainless Steel provides a combination of corrosion resistance and strength not found in any
other commercial material available in its price range. This austenitic stainless has corrosion resistance
greater than that provided by Types 316 and 316L, plus approximately twice the yield strength at room
temperature. In addition, Armco NITRONIC 50 Stainless has very good mechanical properties at both
elevated and sub-zero temperatures. And, unlike many austenitic stainless steels, NITRONIC 50 does not
become magnetic when cold worked.

Annealing Temperature
NITRONIC 50 Stainless Steel can be supplied annealed at 1950 F to 2050 F (1066 C to 1121 C). For most
applications, the 1950 F (1066 C) condition should be selected, as it provides a higher level of mechanical
properties along with excellent corrosion resistance. When as-welded material is to be used in strongly
corrosive media, the 2050 F (1121 C) condition should be specified in order to minimize the possibility of
intergranular attack.
Corrosion Properties
Armco NITRONIC 50 Stainless Steel provides outstanding corrosion resistance - superior to Types 316,
316L, 317 and 317L in many media. For many applications the 1950 F (1066 C) annealed condition provides
adequate corrosion resistance and a higher strength level. In very corrosive media or where material is to be
used in the as-welded condition, the 2050 F (1121 C) annealed condition should be specified. High-Strength
(HS) NITRONIC 50 bars are useful for applications such as shafting and bolting, but do not quite exhibit the
corrosion resistance of the annealed conditions in all environments.
Intergranular Attack
The resistance to intergranular attack is excellent even when sensitized at 1250 F (675 C) for one hour to
simulate the heat-affected zone of heavy weldments. Material annealed at 1950 F (1066 C) has very good
resistance to intergranular attack for most applications. However, when thick sections are used in the aswelded condition in certain strongly corrosive media, the 2050 F (1121 C) condition gives optimum corrosion
resistance.
Stress-Corrosion Cracking Resistance
In common with most stainless steels, under certain conditions, Armco NITRONIC 50 Stainless Steel may
stress-corrosion crack in hot chloride environments. When tested in boiling 420/0 MgCI2 solution, a very
accelerated test, NITRONIC 50 Stainless Steel is between types 304 and 316 stainless steels in resistance
to cracking. There is little difference in susceptibility to cracking whether in the annealed, high-strength (HS),
or cold-drawn conditions.
Sulfide Stress Cracking
Both laboratory tests and field service experience have shown that Armco NITRONIC 50 stainless has
excellent resistance to sulfide stress cracking in air conditions. NITRONIC 50 in both the annealed and highstrength (hot rolled) conditions has been included in the 1996 revision of NACE Standard MR-01 -75'
"Sulfide Stress Cracking Resistant Metallic Material for Oil Field Equipment," at hardness levels up to RC 35
maximum. The resistance to cracking in laboratory tests in synthetic sour-well solution(5% NaCI + %
acetic acid. saturated with H2S)
NITRONIC 30 Fe Bal, Cr 16, Mn 8, Ni 2.5, Si .3, N 0.16 (UNS S20400)
Corrosion and abrasion resistant, tough and durable, NITRONIC 30 is the stainless steel for your abrasive
needs. Ball mill tests have shown that many application standards, such as AR 500 suffer six to seven times
as much metal loss as NITRONIC 30.
An economical corrosion, and abrasion resistant stainless steel. This is a popular replacement for carbon
steel, due to the resistance to outside weather conditions.
Characteristics
NITRONIC 30 is highly impact-resistant, which makes it ideal for a range of heavy duty applications. Already
proven to be the endurance leader in coal handling equipment and prep plants, NITRONIC 30 will last up to
twice as long as its nearest competitor.
Selecting the best material for the job goes well beyond the initial price of the material. The maintenance,

downtime and replacement costs associated with poor material performance can wreak havoc with
production time and budget. NITRONIC 30 was engineered with these realities in mind.
Applications

Coal Buckets
Hoppers
Distributors
Ore Separators
Barge Liners
Refrigerated Trucks
Food Processing Equipment
Bulk Solid Handling Equipment
Sewage Treatment Structures
Screens Hoppers
Trailer Bedliners
Chutes
Truck/Bus Frames

PLEASE NOTE: Abrasive wear is NOT the same as metal-to-metal wear, or galling. Abrasive wear is
caused by objects that slide uncontinuously across a surface. Abrasion is tearing or shearing of the surface,
and is best remedied using a low cost material. Corrosion is also a factor in abrasion, as it can lead to faster
failure by allowing larger pieces to flake.
If you are experiencing these types of failures, see NITRONIC 60, or HPAlloys Cobalt 6B.
HPA COBALT alloy 6B (Co-Cr-W) Co 59.0, Cr 30.0, W 3.5, Ni 2.5, Mn 1.4, C 1.0 (UNS R30016)
Cobalt 6B is cobalt based chromium, tungsten alloy for wear environments where seizing, galling and
abrasion are present. 6B is resistant to seizing and galling and with its low coefficient of friction, allows
sliding contact with other metals without damage by metal pick up in many cases. Seizing and galling can be
minimized in applications without lubrication or where lubrication is impractical. Metal seizing is similar to
one metal piece building heat against another and they become "welded" together. Galling is when these
"weld" areas break off and form abrasive debris which creates additional abrasion problems.
Alloy 6B has outstanding resistance to most types of wear. Its wear resistance is inherent and not the result
of cold working, heat treating or any other method. This inherent property reduces the amount of heat
treating and post machining. 6B has outstanding resistance to cavitation erosion. Steam turbine erosion
shields from 6B have protected the blades of turbines for years of continuous service. 6B has good impact
and thermal shock resistance resists heat and oxidation, retains high hardness even at red heat (then
cooled, recovers full original hardness) and has resistance to a variety of corrosive media. 6B is useful
where both wear and corrosion resistance is needed.
Applications
Steam turbine erosion shields, Chain saw guide bars, High temperature bearings, Furnace fan blades, Valve
stems, Food processing equipment, Needle valves, Centrifuge liners, Hot extrusion dies, Forming dies,
Nozzles, Extruder screws, & many other Misc. wear surfaces.
Applications for alloy 6B include half sleeves and half bushings in screw conveyors, tile making machines,
rock crushing rollers and cement and steel mill equipment. Alloy 6B is well suited for valve parts, pump
plungers.
Wrought alloy 6B offers the ductility, fatigue resistance and toughness of a hot worked microstructure, with
the heat corrosion and wear resistance of cobalt based alloy. High Performance Alloys, Inc. inventories bar,
sheet, and plate. Bar is stocked from 3/8" through 6" diameter. Bar can be supplied in random lengths or cut
to order. Sheet and plate are offered as whole plates, can be abrasive cut, or processed further using water
jet services.

HPA COBALT alloy 6BH (Co-Cr-W) Co 59.0, Cr 30.0, W 3.5, Ni 2.5, Mn 1.4, C 1.0 (UNS R30016)
Cobalt 6BH is the same composition of Cobalt 6B, except the material is hot rolled and then age hardened.
The direct age-hardening after hot rolling provides the maximum hardness and wear resistance. The
advantages this creates are increased wear life, retained edge characteristics, and increased hardness.
These properties are in addition to the galling and seizing resistance of the regular Cobalt 6B.
Cobalt 6BH is known in the industry as a metal that retains its cutting edge. The economic advantages are in
its long wear time, less down time, and fewer replacements. This material surpasses 6K with better ductility,
with the same good hardness.
Applications
Steam turbine erosion shields, Chain saw guide bars, High temperature bearings, Furnace fan blades, Valve
stems, Food processing equipment, Needle valves, Centrifuge liners, Hot extrusion dies, Forming dies,
Nozzles, Extruder screws, & many other Misc. wear surfaces.
Applications for alloy 6BH also include tile making machines, rock crushing rollers and cement and steel mill
equipment. Alloy 6BH is well suited for valve parts, pump plungers
Wrought alloy 6BH offers the fatigue resistance and toughness of a hot worked microstructure, with the heat
corrosion and wear resistance of cobalt based alloy. High Performance Alloys, Inc. inventories sheet, and
plate. Bar is can be produced 1/2" through 2-1/2" diameter. Bar can be supplied in random lengths or cut to
order. Sheet and plate are offered as whole plates, can be abrasive cut, or processed further using water jet
services.

Alloy L-605 is the strongest of the formable cobalt alloys, useful for continuous service to 1800F. Because
of long and widespread use, this alloy has been the subject of many investigations to determine its
properties over a wide range of conditions, thus making it an unusually well characterized material. Alloy L605 is also known as alloy 25.
When exposed for prolonged periods at intermediate temperatures, alloy L-605 exhibits a loss of room
temperature ductility in much the same fashion as other super alloys, such as X or 625.
Alloy L-605 is welded using gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, shielded metal arc, electron beam and
resistance welding. Submerged arc welding is not recommended. Use good joint fit-up, minimum restraint,
low inter-pass temperature and cool rapidly from welding. For maximum ductility fabricated components
should be annealed 2150-2250F, rapid cool.

INCONEL alloy 601 Ni 61, Cr 22, Fe Bal, Al 1.4 (UNS N06601)

INCONEL nickel-chromium-iron alloy 601 is a general-purpose engineering material for applications that
require resistance to heat and corrosion. The outstanding characteristic of INCONEL alloy 601 is its
resistance to high-temperature oxidation. The alloy also has good resistance to aqueous corrosion, has high
mechanical strength, and is readily formed, machined, and welded.
The limiting chemical composition of INCONEL alloy 601 is listed in Table 1. The composition is a facecentered-cubic solid solution with a high degree of metallurgical stability. The alloys nickel base, in
conjunction with substantial chromium content, provides resistance too many corrosive media and hightemperature environments. Oxidation resistance is further enhanced by the aluminum content.
Characteristics

The most important property of Alloy 601 is resistance to oxidation at very high temperatures up to
1250C. Even under severe conditions such as, cyclical heating and cooling. This is possible due to
Alloy 601 having a tightly adherent oxide layer which is resistant against spalling.
Resistance to carburization is good, also resistant to carbon nitriding conditions.
Due to high chromium and some aluminum content, good resistance in oxidizing sulfur bearing
atmospheres at elevated temperatures is demonstrated.
