MINI PROJECT3 UNIVERSAL JOINT(HOOKES JOINT)

STANDARD DESIGN UNIVERSAL JOINT


These are generally made by high quality alloy steel forging.
They are heat treated in a carburizing process that produces bearing
quality case hardened steels which maximises life expectancy.
End lube option features the grease fitting in the bearing cup.
Bearing caps are extruded, carburized and case hardened to a uniform
depth for strength and durability. Cup face and outer diameter are
precision ground for precise lock-up tolerances and fit to yoke ear
dimensions. Needle bearings are sized for maximum load carrying
capacity.
Seals are made of nitrile rubber for optimal grease retention and
contamination exclusion. They are pliable, yet tough and abrasion
resistant.
Lubricant grooves feature a 360 degree pattern which assures that
grease penetrates around the entire circumference of the journal and
between all needle bearings.

PREMIUM DESIGN UNIVERSAL JOINT


Red high performance seals are made of nitrile rubber for
optimal sealing and temperature resistance.
Bearing cups are pre-lubricated for life with synthetic lithium
grease, providing superior friction reduction and higher
temperature resistance.
Nitrile rubber seal compound has internal lubricant to reduce
friction between sealing surfaces.
Nitrile rubber seal compound has Anti-Ozanant for resistance
to ozone attack and to reduce cracking from oxidation.
They are solid for higher load-carrying capacity.
Grease reservoirs are located in each end to assure lubrication.
Solid forged cross body increases the strength of the joint for
rigorous loads

PREMIUM ALUMI GUARD DESIGN UNIVERSAL JOINTS
Specifically designed for use in vehicles originally equipped with
Aluminium driveshaft yokes.
Appropriate bearing cups and snap rings are protected by OEM
approved coating process that resists corrosion.
Corrosion resistant surface prevents electrolysis (Galvanic
Corrosion) between Aluminium and steel surfaces that are in
contact.
Retains ALL of the quality features of our Premium Universal
Joint.
OEM driveshaft applications can be verified by using a magnet
against the driveshaft tubing. Non-magnetic drive shafts should
use Alumni Guard Universal Joints.

INSIDE LOCK-UP
This universal joint design uses round bearing cups with a snap ring groove on the outside
diameter of the bearings and machined fl at surfaces on the inside of the yoke ears. It is
easier to measure the lock-up for this style by measuring the yoke from inside ear to inside
ear. If the yoke is not available, lock-up can be measured on the universal joint itself.
1. Assemble bearing cups onto cross.
2. Install snap rings in bearing grooves.
3. Remove rubber seals or clamp bearing cups with a C-clamp or vise.
4. Measure across all four snap rings - A. Include width of snap rings in this measurement.
5. Measure outside diameters of all four bearing cups. Conversion joints and some OE
applications use two different diameter bearing cups.

OUTSIDE LOCK-UP
This universal joint design uses round bearing cups with afl at ground back surface. The
cups are retained in the yoke by a snap ring that locks into a groove in the yoke cross hole.
1. Assemble bearing cups onto cross.
2. Remove rubber seals or clamp bearing cups with a C-clamp or vise.
3. Measure across the outsides of all four bearing cups - B.
4. Measure outside diameters of all four bearing cups. Conversion joints and some OE
applications use two different diameter bearing cups.

PLASTIC INJECTION
This style of lock-up was used only in OEM Saginaw CV applications. When
disassembled, OE joints are replaced with standard universal joint kits using inside
lock-up.

U-BOLT & BEARING STRAP


These two types of universal joints use round bearings secured in the yoke ears by a
U-shaped bolt or strap that fits over the bearing cup. Measure in the same manner
as outside lock-up

RETAINER PLATE
These universal joint kits use afl at plate welded to the back surface of the bearing
cups. Two bolts retain each bearing in the yoke ears. Heavy Duty series using this
style are 1610, 1710, 1760, 1800* and 1810. Basic reference dimensions required to
identify each one are listed below. Measure between the inside surfaces of the
retainer plates or between the outside surfaces of the yoke ears.

MECHANICS DESIGN
(WING & BLOCK BUSHINGS)
This universal joint design uses a block- or wingstyle bearing cup that locates in a
flat flange-type yoke with a tongue and groove arrangement. Identify the bearing
shape on the previous diagram. Some applications use two different bearing types.
1. Assemble bearing cups onto cross.
2. Clamp the bearings with C-clamp or vise.
3. Measure across two bearings, in the same manner as outside lock-up.
