Features and Benefits of the Remote UI

After you start your web browser and specify an IP (Internet Protocol) address for
the device, the Remote UI screen is displayed and ready to use.

Features and Benefits of the Remote UI

1-3

1
Using the Remote UI

The Remote UI (User Interface) is software within the device that provides you with
functions such as managing device status, job management, and allows various
settings and changes. Web server software is installed into the device which
enables you to use the Remote UI. Therefore no additional software is required.

Device status check from a network computer

The Remote UI allows you to access the device via a network, enabling you to display the
current status and settings for the device, and the status of all information and job
processing. You can manage the device from a personal computer connected to the
network without having to perform operations on the device itself.
When you specify the IP address of the device with your web browser, the Remote UIs
top page appears as shown below:

Using the Remote UI

Go to Remote UI Top Page.

Displays the current printer status, scanner status, and fax status.
(The Fax function is only available when the fax board is installed in
the imageRUNNER 3300i, or the imageRUNNER 3300/2800/2200.)
Displays the current status, settings and equipment being used with
the device.
Displays the current status of jobs, and permits changes to jobs being
processed by the device.
View and print documents stored in mail boxes in the device.
Click this button when you want to use the device to print a PDF or PS
file saved on the computer or network you are using, without opening
the file. (This function can only be used when the imageRUNNER 105,
imageRUNNER 8500, imageRUNNER 85, imageRUNNER 7200 or
imageRUNNER 3300i is used as a PS or PCL printer.)

1-4

Features and Benefits of the Remote UI

Click this button to store addresses in, and manage, the Address
Books, and System Ref.
Click this button to edit a variety of settings for the device (such as
System, Forwarding Settings, Dept. ID Management, Import/Export,
and Custom Settings).
This updates the currently displayed screen with the latest information.
Information is not updated automatically. When you click this button,
the latest information from the device is acquired.

Set and control the device from a PC

The Remote UI allows you to stop and resume jobs, view and print jobs stored in mail
boxes, and change various settings. You can edit settings and control the device from a
PC without using the devices control panel.

Features and Benefits of the Remote UI

1-5

NOTE
You can change the language displayed on the screen by selecting a language from the
language drop-down list. This function is only available when you set the [Language

control panel. For instructions on how to use the control panel, see Chapter 3, Selecting
and Storing Settings to Suit your Needs, in the Reference Guide. (This function is not
available with the imageRUNNER 6000/5000.)
Switching the language limits the types of letters you can enter.

View an image in a Mail Box on a PC

The Remote UI enables you to display image files stored in mail boxes, from the [Mail
Box] button on your PC, using the JBIG Image Viewer.

Glossary
Cookie
A file left on a user's computer when the user visits a web site. A cookie allows the
web site to recognize the user on subsequent visits. Tokens are generally used to
allow a user to automatically sign on to certain web sites and to customize the
features offered by such sites.

JBIG
Joint Bi-level Image Experts Group. An experts group which defines a standard for
compressing (reducing the size of) image files without any loss in image information.
Files containing photographic images in web pages are generally compressed so
they can be transferred across the Internet more quickly. JPEG, the format currently
used, causes some loss in image data after compression and so reduces image
clarity. JBIG compression will overcome this shortcoming.

JPEG
Joint Photographic Experts Group. An experts group that defined a standard for
compressing (reducing the size of) photographic and photorealistic image files. The
image compression method used involves some loss of information and so reduces
image quality. Files containing photographic images in web pages are generally
compressed by using JPEG format so they can be transferred across the Internet
more quickly.

Protocol
A set of rules that govern the transmission of data across a network. Examples of
protocols are FTP, DHCP, BOOTP, RARP, IPP and TCP/IP.

Proxy server
A server which provides a cache of files available on remote servers that are slow or
expensive to access. The term, "proxy server", normally refers to a World Wide Web
server that, on receiving a URL, tries to supply the requested file from its cache. If it
cannot locate the file there, the proxy server would bring it from the remote server and
also save a copy in its cache so that the next request can be obtained locally.

TCP/IP
The protocol used to connect to the Internet and to wide-area networks.

Glossary

URL
Uniform Resource Locator. A standard way of specifying the location of an object,
usually a web page, on the Internet. The URL for a web page would look something
like this: "http://www.w3.org/default.html". Here, "http:" indicates that a web page is
being accessed, "www.w3.org" is the address of the server containing the web page,
and "default.htm" is the file name under which the web page is stored on the server.
