PM opens new $25 million biscuit factory

By ANUSHIL KUMAR
The newly built Punjas state-ofthe-art Biscuit factory was officially
opened by the Prime Minister Honourable Voreqe Bainimarama in Navutu, Lautoka on Saturday, December 13.
Honourable Bainimarama, during
the opening ceremony, said he was
impressed with the new facility.
There is much to be impressed
about this new facility. It is a 25-million dollar investment in the latest
food production technology from
Italy. It will immediately create 100
new jobs and another 200 over the
next two years.
But for me, the really impressive dimension about this project is
that more than half of the biscuits
produced here will be exported. The
quality of those biscuits demonstrates how far weve come as manufacturers in Fiji.
Were no longer merely exporters of cabin crackers for the Pacific
market which we have been for
many years but of high-grade biscuits destined for the morning and
afternoon tea tables of Australia,
New Zealand and other countries.
He thanked the company and the
Punja family for the tremendous contribution towards the Fiji economy.
I want to thank Punjas as a company and Punjas as a family for the
wonderful contribution they have
made and are making to this effort. As an expression of confidence
in our economy and our export future, this really takes the biscuit to
use an old saying. Its an exciting day
not only for Punjas but for Fiji as a
whole and Im very pleased to be
here to celebrate it.

tor Nitin Punja said the factory will

boost the Fijian made products.
This state-of-the-art factory we
are inaugurating today represents
a major statement of confidence in
Fiji and the Fijian made products,
he said.
The popularity of our Fijian
made biscuits will help boost the export sector and Fijis long term prosperity in the expert world.
The entire manufacturing line for
the factory, which features the latest in food manufacturing technology and food standards, has been
purchased from a globally reputed
Italian manufacturer with a 70-meter
long hybrid-oven and packaging
system.

Early Christmas cheer

By LEANNE EDWARDS
of Denarau Corporation
Ltd
At this time of the year
we all reflect on those, who
through circumstances beyond their control find themselves in difficult situations.
The Sofitel Fiji Resort &
Spa, Denarau Island, for the
third year running, made the
dreams of so many children
come true as they visited the
Lautoka Hospital Childrens
Ward and Loloma Home in
Sabeto on Friday, December
5.
Approximately 40 Ambassadors led by Sofitels General Manager, Mr Alan Burrows took an early Christmas
cheer for the children, singing
Christmas carols and taking
with them morning tea and
gifts which were donated by
staff and guests of the resort.
The children at the Lautoka Hospital Childrens ward
were taken by surprise as the
team walked through the ward
singing carols and handed out
soft toys.
Tears filled the eyes of
family members as for some;
all hope in Christmas has
been dampened with their
child being admitted this time

of the year.
Many of the staff experienced different emotions as
they handed out gifts to the
children they had never met
before.
After the Lautoka Hospital,
the team headed to Loloma
Home which is nestled in the
interiors of the sleeping giants
of Sabeto.
Being their third annual
visit to the home brought
about joy from the orphanage
as most of the staff remembered the names of the chil-

dren which meant so much

to them. Morning tea was
shared, carols were sung and
gifts handed out to the children.
At this time of year we all
reflect on those, who through
circumstances beyond their
control find themselves in difficult circumstances, said Mr
Burrows.
As a significant business in the tourism sector,
we wanted to give some additional Christmas cheer to
some places that we help all

year round.
For me, experiencing
my first Christmas in Fiji, it
was a humbling but uplifting
experience to go to Loloma
Home and see the joy our visit
brought to the mothers & children at the home.
The Fiji Loloma Orphanage is a refuge for desperate
mothers and their children.
Loloma Home also cares for
orphans, the homeless and the
elderly.

Making a difference
The Western Charity Alliance in conjunction with Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation
has contributed again towards
the rural farming community
through their Nursery Project.
The Project started in Ba
where local farmers have
gained by receiving portable
nursery of their own to nurture
their plants during this humid
weather conditions and to
propagate seedlings for local
farming community.
This project is not only for
farmers but also for vulnerable
and destitutes in the rural community to sustain their livelihoods.
A 57-year-old farmer
Krishna Naidu from Veisaru,
Ba was overwhelmed to receive the nursery and 15 types

of vegetable seeds from Vodafone to start up a new livelihood.

He could not stop thanking
Vodafone for its continuous
support to the people of Fiji,
especially to those poor and
needy in the community who
are vulnerable in many ways.
He added the seeds and the
nursery supplied to him will
change things to his life and
his families as he is unable to
get in to employment due to
his unstable health condition.
Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundations Project Officer and
Western Charity Alliance executive director Mr Jitendra
Naidu elaborated they will not
stop here, instead this will be
seen throughout the western
division as their main objec-

tive is to sustain peoples livelihoods through healthy living

and eating fresh foods from
their backyard.
Vodafones World of Difference (WOD) program is
for its people and they would
go to extreme heights to make
a difference in peoples lives.
Mr Naidu said early next
year they will be partnering
with Ministry of Youth and
Sports and Ministry of Agriculture which will boost assistance to its people in local
community.
Our youths are the change
agent and can bring in a
greater change towards development and change to our
environment. The mentality
of youths needs to be changed
and they need to be involve

in farming vigorously, especially backyard gardening to
sustain our livelihoods not
only by planting and eating
fresh chemical free vegetables
from our backyard but also to
contribute towards increasing NCD problems, which is

a major concern in our country at the moment. By doing a

backyard garden people will
also save money and will indirectly boost the economy for
a better and brighter future.
(killing 3 birds with 1 stone),
he said.

Mr Naidu added year 2015

will change many peoples

which will have a direct effect
the NCD issues and unemployment issues in our country.

APTC trains over 300 females in trades and technology

Over 300 Pacific women
have graduated with Australian-standard trades and technology qualifications from the
Australia-Pacific Technical
College (APTC) since its establishment in 2007.
APTC is a development
initiative funded by the Australian Government to deliver
training in order to increase
the supply of skilled workers
in targeted sectors in the Pacific region. It has campuses
in Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Solomon
Islands.
While trades and technology are male-dominated
sectors, APTC continues to
encourage applications from
females who have chosen this

as a career path.
Victoria Mopio from Papua New Guinea is an example
of a female trades graduate
who successfully completed
a program at APTC. Mopio
always had an interest in a career as a professional painter.
With no formal training, her
options for expanding in this
career path were limited. All
that changed when she was
accepted into the Certificate
III Program in Painting and
Decoration.
Studying at APTC was a
good learning experience for
Mopio, who said the practical sessions taught by highly
qualified and internationally
accredited trainers helped her

learn the technique and skills

of painting and decorating.
After completing her studies, Mopio returned to PNG
and took up a career as a fulltime painter in a construction
and building company.
Mopio says the most exciting part of her job is to be
working out in the field and
to be able to earn more than
before.
Another female graduate,
Siteri Rasousou who completed a Certificate III in Mechanical Engineering (Diesel
Fitting), said she found the
level of training at APTC to be
of very high standards. These
standards have allowed her to
find employment overseas.

THE JET - FIJIS FIRST COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER

Now working in New Zealand, Rasousou said she has

been applying the things she
learnt in class to her everyday
work dealing with heavy vehicles and related technology.
The training helped me to
broaden my knowledge and to
upskill myself to keep abreast
with the changing technology
especially with mechanical
tasks that have evolved to include electronic technology,
she mentioned.
APTCs acting director for
School of Trades and Technology, Bede OBrien explained
APTC helps develop skills
needed for the relevant trade
regardless of gender, adding
that for female graduates, this
empowers them to be able to

demonstrate their skills and

abilities in what is traditionally a male dominated area of
employment.
Our female trade graduates
have
demonstrated
through the respective training program that they have
exactly the same skills and
knowledge as their male
counterparts and that they can
be just as successful in their
chosen trade career, he said.
Similar comments were
shared by Roslyn Magalu,
who holds the position of
APTC Work tutor at the
APTC campus in Papua New
Guinea. Roslyn has been
teaching students employability skills for the workplace.
She said female students are

very competitive with their

male counterparts in class,
even though there are generally fewer female students.

Construction works Enhancements expected for

gets underway for Denarau in 2015
Remand Centre
The Westin Denarau Island
Resort and Spa has announced
the commencement of development of its Westin Spa Studios and Suites.
The sumptuously designed
Spa Studios and Suites, located adjacent to the Heavenly
Spa by Westin, aims to elevate
guest experience and cater for
the growing spa retreat seeking tourism market.
This will allow guests to
escape to a retreat, unwind
and relish the highly personalised service that will nourish
the soul.

Each ground floor studio

will feature a private plunge
pool while a total of 36 private
spa baths will be placed on the
balconies of the top floor studios.
The enhancement of the
entire Village 700, which is
earmarked to become the Spa
Studios and Suites, is planned
to be completed by the end of
February 2015.
Meanwhile, the Sheraton
Resort and Spa Tokoriki Island has found the solution of
the sound proofing issues they
had been facing.
The resort is thankful to
the continued support of the
guests and the feedback from
them has helped the manage-

ment identify the issues with

the guest room floors and between the rooms.
With minimal disruptions
to the guests, the project,
which is currently underway,
is expected to be completed
by the end of January next
year.
Renovations also continue
at the Sheraton Denarau Villas.
A refurbishment of another 14 villas is anticipated
by March 14 next year while
the rehabilitation works are
currently underway for the
12-by-two bedroom villas.

The newly completed

Cuvu health centre is expected to benefit close to 7000 residents in the Nadroga/Navosa
district.
Acting divisional commissioner Luke Moroivalu said
services that would be provided at the centre would take
over some of the workload
provided at the nearest main
hospital, the Sigatoka hospital.
With this new health cen-

tre, people living in the tikina

of Malomalo, Nadromai and
Tuva will be able to access
this health facility.
He added establishing
health facilities in the area
would also compliment governments reforms in the tourism sector by providing basic
essential services.
When investors come to
invest in this place, their focus is on the essential services
like hospitals, good roads and

water supply, Mr Moroivalu

said.
Assistant Roko Nadroga/
Navosa Rusiate Raidaveta
said the new centre would be
welcomed by those Fijians
who had to travel long distance to access basic health
services and facilities.
The health centre cost $1.3
mllion and includes residential quarters for staff that will
work there.

The Financial Intelligence

Unit (FIU) would like to advise officials of religious organisations who collect and
receive funds on behalf of
their organisations to comply
with the relevant laws and
regulations.
The Director of the FIU,
Mr Razim Buksh said a
number of cases have been
brought to the attention of the
FIU involving diversion and
abuse of funds by officials of
religious organisations in Fiji.
Most of the cases involved
the collection of funds outside
of Fiji, the manner in which
the funds are brought into
Fiji, and subsequently how
the funds were deposited and
used.
Some cases that were reported to the FIU involved
funds collected locally for the
religious organisations were

deposited into the personal

bank accounts of its members
and officials instead of the
bank account of the organisation.
In another case, an expatriate religious worker received
international payments for
the organisation from other
overseas donors into his personal bank account without
the knowledge of the organisation. The religious worker
withdrew the funds and remitted it to his family members in
his home country.
In a recent case, a religious
worker received numerous
overseas remittance transactions. The religious worker
paid off his loan on an expensive residential property, has
a number of properties, travelled overseas frequently and
has sent his child to an expensive private training school.

Mr Buksh said as part of

FIUs awareness and outreach
program to combat financial
crimes, members and officials
of religious organisations
are advised to exercise prudent and transparent financial
transaction practices.
Mr Buksh also acknowledged that some religious
organisations already have
sound internal controls with
adequate measures against financial fraud and abuse.
Members of religious and
charitable organisations and
the general public are also
advised to report suspected
fraudulent activities to the Fiji
Police Force and to the FIU.

The groundbreaking ceremony for a new remand centre

in Lautoka will improve correctional and judicial services
in the western city.
Scheduled for completion
in 2015, the new facility will
be located at the Natabua Corrections Facility.
The Fiji Corrections Services Deputy Commissioner,
Superintendent Akuila Namakadre says the groundbreaking ceremony in Lautoka on Wednesday, December
10, was a turning point for
the safety of those remanded
pending their cases.
This is a milestone project

as it not only puts Fiji on par

with international law under
the United Nations corrections facilities but also internally to ensure that the safety
of those in remand continue to
be dealt separately than those
that are convicted, he said.
This is the first ever facility to be built in Lautoka
and underpins governments
efforts in ensuring that the
department is well equipped.
We are also planning to build
a similar facility in Labasa.
The 1.9 million dollar facility will be a two-storey
building with dormitory type
facilities and will cater for 96

persons.
District Officer Nadi, Mr
Jiuta Waqavonovono who
was the chief guest on behalf
of the Acting Commissioner
Western said the new facility
would improve services at the
corrections facility.
Not only will it assist Fijis reputation in meeting the
UN minimum standard rule
which Fiji is a signatory to but
also it will significantly reduce overcrowding in the cell
blocks, Mr Waqavonovono
said.

Farm manual for agriculture sector and farmers

With the introduction of
a new Fiji Farm Management Budget manual for the
agriculture sector, farmers in
Fiji are expected to benefit
immensely from the Ministry of Agricultures efforts in
developing and disseminating
relevant information and appropriate technologies.
The Honorable Minister
for Agriculture, Rural and
Maritime Development, National Disaster Management
Inia Seruiratu made the statement at the launching of the
manual in Nadi on Friday, December 5.
Mr Seruiratu said the manual contains both the technical
and financial information for
farming.
This manual is part of our
commitment to making a difference in the livelihood of the
people. And it should be used
as a tool by extension officers
and farmers in the formulation
of Proposed Farm Business
Plans and Better Farm Plans,
Mr Seruiratu said.
There are 61 crops and 10
livestock and fisheries com-

modities provided. As for the

financial gross margin analysis, only 48 crops and seven
livestock commodities are
provided and it is expected
that users will use those examples to work out commodity
combination of their choices.
He said the gross margin
analysis should be used to develop Farming Systems Budgets or Whole Farm Budgets
to show the profitability of
different Farming Systems.
This, he said, should be representative of the household
income level in the different
farming localities.
Mr Seruiratu added that a
farmer in making the choice
of crops and livestock to cultivate must have long term security of land tenure in order
to encourage investment.
Farm plans must have
long, medium and short term
commodities which will help
spread risks and ensure sustainability.
The challenge is in making the right choice of commodity mix that is not only
viable but sustainable in the

long term and within the context of what the market opportunities will allow.
The manual would help
farmers and planners in making the right choices of investment. It is vital that farmers
are aware of the changes and
the existing opportunities that
are shown in the manual and
they should be responsive in
order to reap the benefits.
Mr Seruiratu highlighted
the manual will also help
the Ministry of Agricultures
Crop and Livestock Extension in developing farming
systems in Fiji that will finally
result in improving total productivity and increasing Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) contribution of the Agricultural
Sector.
The agricultural sector
used to be the backbone of
the country in the past and the
biggest contributor of around
20 per cent of GDP as opposed to around 9 per cent that
are seen to date, he said.
He added the sector has
now been overtaken by the
manufacturing and the tour-

THE JET - FIJIS FIRST COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER

ism sectors as the biggest

source of foreign exchange
and employment generation
in the country.
Mr Seruiratu also said
poverty in rural areas is at a
higher rate and there is a need
to concentrate on agriculture
in order to bring people out of
poverty.
However, he mentioned
with the increasing rate of unemployment with over 12,000
youths entering the job market annually, government recognises that there is no other
sector that could absorb and
provide employment opportunities better than the agricultural sector.
Government is committed
to alleviating poverty and improving the livelihood of the
rural people of Fiji as stipulated in the Peoples Charter and
the Strategic Framework for
Change, Mr Seruiratu said.
He said according to the
latest Household Income and
Expenditure Survey (HIES)
report, most of our rural people are living below the poverty line.

Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development,

National Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu (first row, first

It is an anomaly that needs

to be reversed given the abundance of unutilized land and
untapped resources in rural
Fiji. There is no poor Fijianonly lazy Fijian- and there is
no reason why any rural Fijian should be cash poor. Rural
people are only poor because
they are treating farming as
just a way of life rather than a
business with clear goals and
targets.
Mr Seruiratu expressed his
gratitude towards the Farm
Management Section for co-

ordinating the preparation of

the manual and all other the
divisions within the Ministry
for contributing to the review
of the technical and financial
parts of the Fiji Farm Management Budget Manual 2014.
The Ministry will continue
upgrading the manual to help
improve the quality of service
delivery to the rural farmers
and assist in efforts to fully
develop semi-commercial and
commercial farmers in Fiji.

Ms Singh also mentioned
the Nadi Womens Crisis Centre receives about six cases in
a week and would be dealing
with almost 30-50 domestic
violence cases, however the
Crisis Centre also handles
sexual harassment, child
abuse, rape cases as well as
other issues where women
usually seek legal advice.
The Nadi Womens Crisis
centre also provides immense
assistance in terms of moral
support and counselling services which is a great platform
to help empower women.
She said school holidays is
usually the period where the
number of cases increase as
children are usually spending
time at home, and this is often
when the perpetrators strike.
We get invited by schools
when they have pre-school

we talk to the kids, girl guides
and also offer counselling in
some of the secondary schools
around Nadi, Ms Singh concluded.

A survivor of a 14-year
abusive marriage, Acalia Nai
Dakua spoke of her survival
during the turbulent times
of her marriage and how she
managed to open up about her
abusive marriage.
An active member of the
Nadi Womens Crisis Centre and pioneer member of
the Elimination of Violence
against Women (EVAW) committee which was established
in 2011 after the Fiji Womens
Crisis centre national workshop Acalia first learnt about
the womens activist group
(Fiji Womens Crisis Centre)
in 1994 while she was a community worker for the Young

Womens Christian Association (YWCA) Lautoka.

Back then there was no
support group in my church
and the belief was to commit
and submit to your husband.
When I ran away with my
children to mum and brothers
house, I was usually told to
go back to my husband, said
Mrs Dakua.
She had immersed herself
in programmes conducted by
the Fiji Womens Crisis Centre and has helped set up the
Lautoka Crisis centre branch
in the early 1990s.
Mrs Dakua said she has become a vibrant member of the
crisis centre as this was where
she first discovered a sense of
empowerment.
I faced verbal abuse com-

monly, I could take the physical abuse but the verbal abuse
had hit my self esteem hard,
both the church and my family turned me away. When my
husband passed sway I realized verbal abuse doesnt hurt
me anymore and my children
never experienced any repercussions as I always talked to
them and involved them in the
programmes that I took part
in, Mrs Dakua said.
The Womens Crisis Centre normally organises programmes such as the Vigil
night which is mainly for
the purpose of remembering
those who died at the hands of
abusive spouses and also the
International Womens day,
the 16 days activism was the
conclusion of activism pro-

grammes for this year. This

has been a contributing factor
in women being able to come
forward in terms of reporting
cases.
My message to women
out there who are facing any
form of abuse is to come out
and speak out because there
are people are around you
who are willing to help you
and it will feel good to share
what you are going through,
you are not alone , she added.
Mrs Dakua concluded the
Nadi crisis centre was pleased
that the Prime minister Voreqe
Bainimarama has ensured his
government will not condone
violence against women and
perpetrators will be taken to
task.

NFA reminds of fire safety in the workplace

The National Fire Authority (NFA) is again reminding
members of the community
on the importance of fire safety as we look forward to the
festive season.
The NFA is reminding
members of the community
especially business owners,
employees and as well as the
home owners to be mindful
of fire safety at work and at
home.
In the work place, there
will be a lot of activities organised and held as we look
forward to the festive season.
Therefore NFA is reminding
employers and all employees
to be mindful of fire safety
during this time of the year.
NFA CEO John OConnor
highlighted the need to take
extra care in the workplace to
avoid fire incidents.
The NFA is also urging the

business owners to ensure that

their businesses comply with
NFAs fire safety requirements
to avoid the risk of fires occurring in their properties.
Before closing the business or office for the day, it is
also very important that employers and employees check
their business and offices to
ensure that all fire sources in
the business and offices are
taken care of properly.
The month of December
is that time of the year where
distractions are bound to occur as everyone will be in
a festive mood but it is very
important that everyone be
mindful of fire safety.
Not switching off the
lights properly, other fire ignition sources like flammable
materials and substances
which can heat up and ignite a
fire as well as decorations and

lights to light up the business

during this festive season can
lead to a major fire.
Business owners are encouraged to follow the following fire safety tips during this
festive season;
Ensure that power points
and power boards are not over
loaded.
Ensure that you consult
a licensed electrician when
installing any new electrical
decoration or equipment to
ensure there is no overloading
of the power system.
Ensure that thorough
checks are conducted after the
close of business each day to
ensure that all unused power
points are switched off.
Ensure that all ignition
sources such as stoves, etc are
put off.
Ensure that all gas cylinders are closed off.

THE JET - FIJIS FIRST COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER

Ensure that all the supply of flammable liquids are

properly closed off and stored
away from any flammable
material.
Ensure that air conditioners are switched off.
Always ensure good
housekeeping
Advise security officers
to be alert and to alert NFA
on 910 or 911 in case they see
smoke or suspect there is a fire
in the building.
Fire in workplaces and
business can be controlled
and even eliminated, but it
must start with businesses and
organizations recognizing the
disastrous impact of a fire to
their business and being committed to implementing mitigation strategies to minimise
the risk of a fire occurring
in their organisation or business, Mr OConnor said.

NFA is also urging members of the community to be

extra vigilant during this festive season and ensure that
they take extra care every day

to minimize any chance of a

fire occurring.

Nadi man wins

Vodafones 4th
Pick-6 lottery
By ANUSHIL KUMAR
It was an early Christmas
gift for an elderly man as he
was announced one of the seven lucky winners of the Vodafone Pick-6 lottery fourth
draw.
Prakash Reddy of Namaka, Nadi could not believe
his ears when Vodafone Fiji
value added sales assistant
Karishma Pratap gave him a
phone-call to congratulate and
inform of his win.
I was very happy after getting the news that I was one of
the seven lucky winners and
I was also surprised to know
that my six lucky numbers did
win something for me, Mr
Reddy told The Jet.
I was sitting under the
mango tree and started putting
in the six numbers that came
into my mind within a minute
and then I decided to take part
in the lottery draw.
The 53-year-old winner,
who had never won a competition, said it was a great return for his $1.50 investment.
I played only once and
picked my numbers, I never
thought that I would win. This
win is a great return on my
$1.50 invetsment. I will use
the money to start building my
house, he added.

Vodafones Chief Marketing Officer, Mr Sanjeewa Perera said Fijis first ever mobile
lottery service has gained a lot
of interest of their customers
since its launch in August this
year.
There have been winners
after winners since Fijis first
ever mobile lottery service
was launched in August this
year. We are glad to see happy
faces of our customers when
they are announced winners,
said Mr Perera.
The next round of pick-6
lottery has started and will be
drawn on December 28. Customers can either select their
own six numbers or quick
pick from *888#. Each entry
costs $1.50 and customers can
play more than once to try
their luck. Maybe the coming
year becomes lucky for someone on the jackpot prize of
$100,000, he mentioned.
Meanwhile, from all the
four Vodafone pick-6 lottery draws, Mohammed Fareed of Nadi is the only winner (from the second draw)
that has walked away with
full $30,000 cash while Sunil
Chand, who is the marketing
manager of Island Pacific Apparel in Nadi, won himself
$15,000 cash from the first
lottery draw.

By ANUSHIL KUMAR
The Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) launched
its new corporate bula wear
on Friday, December 12.
Made in four different colours, the bula wear design
incorporates the FNPF logo
together with other Fijian artifacts.
According to the CEO Mr
Aisake Taito, the corporate
bula wear symbolises a well
cultured working environment
and embrace the key values of
teamwork and commitment
towards the fund.

Having a corporate wear

will also foster a sense of
unity among our staff and is
expected to enhance confidence and boost the quality of
service being rendered to the
members.
These bula wear will also
be an important part of our

Safety paramount this

festive season
Message from the
Assistant Commissioner of
Police (ACP)
Rusiate Tudravu
With the festive season
upon us, the Fiji Police will be
stepping up its operations.
The Fiji Police Forces
festive operations began on
the second week of December and will run for a month.
Our mission is to ensure every
Fijian and its visitors enjoy a
peaceful and safe festive period. However this can only be
achieved in cooperation with
members of the public.
Some issues of concern
are;
Supervision of Children
Coupled with the end of
another school year, our children will need to be closely
monitored in everything they
do. Their safety must always
be prioritised and who they
spend their time must also be
looked into. During this time
there is always an increase in
reports of missing children
as their whereabouts are not
closely monitored. Parents
and guardians should take
time to discuss pertinent issues about personal safety and
steps to take when in need of
assistance.
Protection of Property
We are expecting a lot of
people to be away from their
homes as is the norm during
the festive season. The onus
is on everyone to ensure their
properties are well secured
and it does not provide opportunities for criminal elements
to act.
The most common cases
of burglary are as a result of
homes not being properly secured thus providing thieves
easy entry. This is why putting aside a few extra minutes
to thoroughly check that your
homes security is paramount.
This also applies to ensuring all fire hazards are
checked thoroughly. Switching off appliances that are not
in use could potentially save
one from losing their homes.
It takes minutes to literally
see everything youve worked
hard for go up in flames,
which is why conducting a
thorough check is of paramount importance.
Traffic
Speeding continues to be
the number one traffic offence on our roads and is also
a leading contributor to road
fatalities. Plan your day well
and you wont find yourself
speeding to and from destinations. Drink driving is also
an area of focus and with the
zero tolerance policy in place,

offenders will be arrested on

the spot. This is something we
want to avoid, however it will
be up to every individual that
gets in the drivers seat to be
mindful that there are consequences if they chose to ignore the law.
Pedestrians also have an
equally vital role to play in
keeping our roads safe. Unfortunately this is a point that
still has not been taken seriously. If we are to prevent further loss of life on our roads,
attitude and behaviour on our
roads must change.
Drowning
Despite the numerous
awareness campaigns conducted on water safety, the
issue continues to be falling
on deaf ears. As stated during
the launch of a partnership between the Fiji Police and Water Safety Council in October,
drowning is preventable.
We will continue to issue
the advisories as we hope to
change the mind-set of Fijians
when it comes to water safety.
Safety measures such as keeping children at arms length
when near water and creating
a buddy system where someone watches all those who
swim should be adopted at all
times.
November to April accounts for 71 per cent of our
countrys drownings and according to the water safety
council its because people
are not keeping watch on toddlers, children, friends and
family when they are in and
around rivers, creeks and the
ocean.
Alcohol consumption
An increase in alcohol
consumption is always the
case during the festive season.
With it comes an increase in
serious cases such as aggravated assault as judgement is
often clouded. In some cases
lives have been lost with families spending the festive season in mourning.
Moderation is key when it
comes to the consumption of
alcohol as it can prevent tragic incidents from occurring.
When one chooses to drink,
they must also be responsible
for their actions. Officers will
also be monitoring popular
night spots by conducting consistent checks on restriction of
minors into night clubs.
The Fiji Police Force is
requesting members of the
public to also do their part by
taking ownership of their individual safety. We are often
caught up with the festivities
and overlook the issue of personal safety and the safety of
our property so that we can
all enjoy the true meaning of
Christmas without incident.

My seven days in Sydney, Australia

Touched down at the Sydney International Airport on

Tuesday, November 25 at
around 11am, the journey of
seven days began with a long
ride from the Airport to Stanhope Gardens where we (me
and Shalendra Prasad) stayed
for six nights and seven days.

Attending a funeral of a
well-known person was the
first experience.
Paying the last respect of
a very renowned personality
of Nadi and Fiji as a whole,
Mr Dewendra Prasad, at the
Pinegrove Memorial Park, a
sea of mourners in black and
white came to bid farewell to
a very respected person and
the man who won peoples
heart through his jokes.
Pacific Cup coverage was
the main reason for our Sydney trip.
Controversies and dramas
were witnessed at the Edensor
Park (Sydney United Football Stadium) as tournament
defending champions Nadi
along with Ba and Rewa were
bundled out in the pool plays

while Suva, who did qualify

for the semi-final, had to say
goodbye to the tournament after another dramatic encounter. New Zealand All Stars
won the tournament beating
the hosts AFFA All Stars 4-3
in the final.
A trip to Sydney is not
worth calling a good trip if
you do not have a visit to the
Harbour Bridge and the Opera
House.
Train ride from Blacktown Train Station going past
Strathfield, Granville, Parramatta, Seven Hills, Richmond
and finally crossing over the
Sydney Harbour Bridge to
the City after an hours ride. A
20-minute walk from the City
Train Station down a sloppy
hill in the 37c scotching

sun, just to get a feeling of

how the Harbour Bridge and
Opera House looks in reality.
For more entertainment, we
then had a short visit to Lunar
Park, which is located near the
bridge.
We spared a day just for
shopping.
Parkleas Market is a onestop shopping place where everything could be found within just one shopping arena.
This was our main shopping
destination. Coles, Big W and
Aldis are some of the leading
supermarkets in Sydney and
observing some of the local
products (Fiji exports) were
indeed a smile on our face.
Karenjit Kaur Vohra, better known by her stage name
Sunny Leone was also in Syd-

ney during our stay as she had

a live-on-stage show at the Selinas Coogee Bay Hotel.
Tour around the North
Pole and Manly to have some
greater experience of New
South Wales (NSW) in my
first ever visit to Sydney.
A spectacular region spanning from Manly, Sydneys
premier beach resort, through
to the northern coastal peninsula of Palm Beach. Indulging senses as we experienced
Australias golden sand and
the refreshing ocean breeze.
Northern Beaches attracts
over 8 million visitors a year,
being the perfect location for
exploring the best that NSW
has to offer. Discovering
coastal towns, National Parks
and experience Sydneys

best view from the top of the

mountain. We also had a visit
to the Saint Andrews Church
in Manly which is recognized
as being one of the best examples of the Romanes-quebuilding style in Australia.
At last but not the least, I
need to thank few people.
Big and hearty thanks to
Fiji Airways for sponsoring
our Sydney trip with two return airline tickets. Brother
Shameel Prasad for accommodating us in a grand way,
satisfying our hunger with
tasty dishes for the entire
seven days and taking out for
cruise and shopping as it was
my first ever visit.
Goodbye Sydney.
In Airbus FJ910, we
touched down back in Fiji.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) has teamed up with

the Fiji Police Force to create
awareness on fire safety in an
attempt to stop property fires
as we look forward to the festive season.
In a meeting between the
heads of the two forces, NFA
Chief Executive Officer John
OConnor and the Commissioner of Fiji Police Force Major General Ben Groenewald,
both showed their concern
on the increasing number of
property fires.
The Commissioner of Police and the CEO of the NFA
expressed concerns at the increase in the number of fire
but more importantly were
concerned since 51% of the
124 property fires reported
until the end of October 2014
have been attributed to carelessness and negligence by
property owners.
According to the fire trend
over the previous years, the

NFA CEO said December

has been the month where
we have recorded the highest
number of property fires and
going forward with Fiji Police
and NFA working together to
ensure the fire safety messages reach all the communities
around the country.
NFA and the Fiji Police
will also work together to ensure members of the community who are careless or negligent and arson fire rebellers
who deliberately set either
their home or someone elses
home on fire are properly addressed in accordance with
relevant legislation.
We have also seen a
growing trend in arson fire
cases where family problems,
domestic violence cases and
personal grudges have resulted in a begrudged party
setting someones house on
fire to take their revenge and
such are some of the concerns
which NFA hopes will be ad-

dressed with this partnership

with the Police in order to
curb particularly residential
fires, Mr OConnor said.
During the school holidays, there is a strong message by both Heads to parents
and guardians on the importance of children fire safety.
It is very important that
parents/guardians and adult
family members always ensure that the children are
closely supervised at home to
avoid any form of incident or
fire cases involving children,
Mr OConnor said.
The NFA CEO highlighted
five lives have been lost so far
as a result of property fires.
It was fortunate that no lives
have been lost so far as a result
of recent fire cases started by
children playing with matches. It can be very disastrous if
parents and adults do not pay
close attention to ensure the
safety of their children from
fires and other emergencies.

In the recent fires caused by

children playing with matches, we have seen that children
as young as three years old are
involved. This is really unacceptable and parents are again
reminded never to leave children unsupervised even for a
few minutes. Parents are also
reminded that fire ignition
sources such as matches and
lighters must be stored out of
the reach of their children.
During this school holidays, parents, guardians and
adult family members at home
are reminded on the need for
fire safety especially on the
need for the supervision of
children.
We hope that parents and
guardians do take heed of the
fire safety message seriously
and ensure that their children
are always under close supervision at home during the
school holidays to avoid their
children becoming a victim of
a fire or any other incident at

home, Mr OConnor said.

The authorities are again
reminding home owners to be
mindful of fire safety during
this festive season especially
with the use of fire appliances
at home.
Parents must sit and discuss the importance of fire
safety with their children.
Children must be made aware
of the dangers of a fire and
the importance of not playing with the ignition sources
which can start a fire.
Commissioner of Police
Ben Groenewald said both
organisations hopes to work
together in engaging the community through joint community awareness programs to
ensure the importance of fire
safety is highlighted to the
members of the community.
The Police Commissioner
said their partnership with
NFA comes at an important
time along with their festive
season operation and they will

be addressing fire safety seriously with the members of the

community.
We will ensure that we
assist NFA in its Fire Safety
Awareness Programs and ensure fire safety is not compromised during this festive season and we will work together
with NFA to address fire safety to all the communities, Mr
Groenewald said.
We are really concerned
with the number of property
fire cases and we hope that
this collaboration with NFA
will help tackle this issue and
keep all properties in Fiji safe
from fire destruction especially during this festive season.
Going forward from here
onwards, the Fiji Police Force
will see that this collaboration
with NFA is strengthened to
enable us to reduce the number of property fires in the
country.

Secret of success
PUNJAS NEW BISCUIT FACTORY

www.thejetnewspaper.com

By ANUSHIL KUMAR

The secret behind Punjas

success in the market is in
grandmothers teachings and
philosophy, said the managing director of Punjas Biscuits
Ltd, Mr Nitin Punja during
the opening ceremony of their
$25 million investment.
Mr Punja, while giving his
welcome address, said it was
indeed a milestone venture for
the company, the nation and
the wider pacific region as he
started reflecting back to the
days in 1934 when the business started.
Eighty years ago, we
humbly began with a small
grocery store in Cuvu (Siga-

toka) where my grandfather

and grandmother worked very
hard.
My grandmothers job
was to make tasty lemon juice
for those who travelled near
and far to shop at our grocery
store. My grandfathers job
was to get ice for the tasty
lemon juice. Together they
would serve fresh lemon juice
to their customers.
My grandmother would
then nobly tell me that it was
her lemon juice that worked
and made customers wanting
to buy our products.
She picked fresh lemons
every morning and took no
short cuts in making her famous lemon juice and she did

this with love, 7 days a week.

An emotional Mr Punja
mentioned his grandmothers
hardwork with love and dedication was the motivating factor which has led to a greater
success for Punjas.
It is easy to recite this
philosophy, but to practice it
every day, 24 hours a day, 7
days a week is a much harder
endeavor.
I am proud to say that our
Punjas team which comprises
of over a thousand people,
is a family of dedicated employees and dedicated family
members, and together, we are
on a mission to provide the
best biscuits with top quality
service.

Proud Punjas thanks

By ANUSHIL KUMAR
The Punjas Biscuit factory
was officially by the Prime
Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
on Saturday, December 13 and
Director Mr Rajesh Punja had
a list of acknowledgement for
their $25 million investment.
I would like to start by
thanking for joining the Punjas family to mark this auspicious occasion. I am sure you
will join me in thanking our
chief guest, the Honourable
Prime Minister for accepting
our invitation, Mr Rajesh
Punja said.
Mr Prime Minister, thank
you for your kind words.
Mr Punja also acknowledged the presence of three
other Ministers who were
present to witness the opening ceremony of the Biscuit
Capital of Fiji as mentioned
by Honourable Bainimarama
during his address.
I would like to AttorneyGeneral and Minister for Finance Honourable Mr SayedKhaiyum who gave us the
confidence and support to do
this project. I would also like
to thank the Minister of Industry and Trade the Honourable Mr Faiyaz Koya and the
Minister for Local Government Honourable Mr Praveen
Kumar.
This Government has
created an environment that
gives businesses like ours the
confidence to continue investing and contributing towards
the growth of our economy.
Our bankers ANZ have
been with us every step of the
way and we say thank you to
Mr Vishnu Mohan, CEO ANZ

Pacific and his team for their

confidence in Punjas. Our Pacific region growth is largely
due to the support of ANZ
Bank. Thank you Vishnu.
We have had fantastic
encouragement from our customers, not just the big retailers but also corner shops and
community canteens to embark on this project.
He mentioned the opening
of the biscuit factory will also
boost the export sector of Fiji.
A significant percentage
of biscuits produced at this
factory will be exported contributing to the export earnings for Fiji. The distribution network Punjas has built
across the Pacific will contribute to achieving this goal.
I would also like to acknowledge and thank the following people and companies
who played a significant role
in this project; Firstly, Sanjay
Kaba of HLK Jacob who has
been the project manager and
driving force for the successful completion of this biscuit
factory. Secondly, Shailen
Kumar of Tulsi Construction,
the local lead contractor of the
Project, for his determination
and commitment.
A special thank you to
the committed and dedicated
team at Punjas who have put
this project together. You will
appreciate that a project of this
size could not have been possible without the involvement
and commitment of many others who we will acknowledge
in a slideshow during lunch.
Finally, I would like to
thank all of our visitors who
have travelled from abroad.

Creating exposure and opportunities for

Fiji through golf
Golf has been an untapped
niche that can now provide leverage for the growth of Fijis
tourism industry, says the Hon
Minister for Industry, Trade
and Tourism Faiyaz Koya.
He said golf has not been
a prominent sport locally but
by the foresight of the Fijian
Government, the country is
hosting the Fiji International

Speaking at the launch of
the 2015 Fiji International

not counting the opportunity
presented to Fijians providing
ancillary services during the
tournament.
The Fiji International has
not only contributes towards
the development of golf in

Fiji, but it has stimulate the

growth of our tourism industry through golf tourism.
This was untapped niche
market that will further leverage our tourism industry.
He said tourism was one of
the main contributors to the
Gross Domestic Product with
as much as 34 per cent of its
input to the total while at the
same time employing one in
every three Fijians.
The event was broadcasted to over 300 million people
across 27 countries internationally, increasing Fijis presence in the international market ten-folds. Brand Fiji got
exposure in the international
media to the tune of $25million, he said.
The Hon Attorney General

Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum added

the allocation of the $12 million by the Fijian government
from the 2015 budget not only
provides exposure by branding Fiji through the 350 million viewers the tournament
gets but also encourages the

Minister calls for more opportunities

for athletes with disabilities
There is a need to create more opportunities and
opening for athletes with disabilities and create a stronger
sense of common purpose
among all stakeholders.
These were the comments
made by the Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Mr
Iliesa Delana as he opened the
2014 Fiji Deaf Games at the
Pacific Theological College in
Suva on Thursday, December
4.
These disabled athletes
are those that are among the
most vulnerable in the world,
Mr Delana said.
Events such as these will
always raise awareness about
their abilities rather than their
disabilities.
Through sports, they can
always showcase their skills
with dignity and display
the transformative power of
sports in their lives and their
participation in athletics or
any form of sport can be the
only place where they get to
develop belief in themselves.
The two-day Fiji Deaf
Games was made possible
through the support of the

Outreach Program.
The theme for the program
is Breaking down the barriers
to allow full participation for
