AR4500 Automated Iron Roughneck

National Oilwell Varco's AR4500 features an inverted

variable-height Spinning Wrench (SW) and an optional
integrated Mud Bucket. The inverted SW significantly
reduces the minimum distance between the SW and
the Torque Wrench (TW) allowing spin in and spin out on
the smooth section of a spiral fluted drilling collar. The
variable-height capability allows the spinning wrench
to be positioned above or below incompatible surfaces
or features on the drill string. This feature allows the
AR4500 to interface with and spin a greater variety of
drill string components. In addition, the SW also
includes variable-extend capability. This capability
allows the SW to horizontally move away from the
torque wrench (TW) centerline. This feature is used to
integrate an optional mud bucket and allow the
AR4500 to close the mud bucket around the tool joint
before spinning the connection out.

Through the innovative use of its variable-position SW

this roughneck can also handle lifting subs, running
subs, non-magnetic collars, casing scrapers,
navigator tools, drilling motors, pup joints,
crossovers, liner hangers, safety valves, drill bits
(Tricone and PDC), stabilizers, hole openers, core
barrels, drilling jars, and pre-made BHA assemblies.
The bit breaking capability improves rig floor safety
and productivity by allowing operators to remotely
control bit breaking operations without using tongs.
In drill pipe make-up mode the operator simply
presses the Auto button to execute each step of the
sequence. Make-up steps include guide (move to
well center with wrench open to serve as stabbing
guide), torque, and return home. In break-out mode
pressing the Auto button once will execute the entire
sequence and return the AR4500 to home position.
