Why BTR

Correct information about the place of birth (POB), time of birth (TOB) and -- is
required to analyze the chart of the native correctly. But normally hospital records
have some errors in jotting down the birth time of a baby. Therefore, BTR (Birth
Time Rectification) is often needed, but the problem arises about the method of
BTR. BTR method must be consistently applicable in all cases, otherwise it cannot
be used in any case. Sudarshan Chakra Dashaa (SCD) of D-1 is the most reliable
tool for BTR, which has greatest measure of tolerance to birth time errors,
because it is based on a whole house which runs for approximately two hours. After
checking chief events of the life, SCD of D-1, we should gradually proceed to
higher divisionals for SCD. When SCD succeeds in explaining all chief events with
SCD, in which Vinshottaree divisionals and their respective Dashaa and Varsh /
Maas Pravesh Chakra also help, we may attempt DPC (Dashaa Pravesh Chakra) of D1's Vinshottaree, which requires very high degree of precision and a great deal of
effort. Generally, astrologers cannot find sufficient time for DPC, and therefore
should restrict themselves to SCD for BTR.
But a majority of astrologers use birth charts with Vinshottaree events for BTR,
which yield results that do not provide satisfactory solutions consistently because
Vinshottaree Dashaa is foolproof only when DPC is used and if used with birth
charts, it may sometimes misguide us , because if the Dashaa Kaarak planet is very
strong in DPC and weak in birth chart then DPC will suppress birth chart. Since DPC
(Dashaa Pravesh Chart) needs many days of painstaking efforts, SCD is the easiest
and accurate tool for BTR.
Traditional methods of BTR are unusable now-a-days because Garbhaadhaan
Sanskaar time and Sootikaa Griha descriptions are not recorded.

No astrology software can give authentic time of birth with a one click. Reaching
correct birth time or Rectification (Shuddhi) is an ART, and an astrologer should
first be well versed in this art. Rectification is not a name of mathematical formula
or table.
Some astrology software has options of rectification, including freeware JHora
(like time change in seconds, minute, hour etc). Others, like Parashara Light and

SriJyoti Star support more detailed options (like list of events and relevant
Dashaa). While western astrology software like Janus and Solar Fire have rich
options of direction and progressions along with life events. Even they cannot help
you, unless you don't know the basics. So one ought to first determine what kind of
rectification, he is looking for.
(1) When both date and time of birth are unknown. This is the most difficult
situation, and very difficult to reach even correct Lagna. Only experienced gurus
and experts can handle these kinds of cases. Better is to avoid such of horoscopes
with uncertain date as well time.
(2) When only date of birth is known, and time is completely unknown. For example
people who know date, but don't have any clue of reliable time of birth. In this
situation, relying on Moon chart is safe. Guessing incorrect Lagna by just looking
face or nature may be misleading. This is again difficult situation to handle, for
there are 12 Lagna in a day. But, if you have very vital life trends, or significant
events that can match any certain Lagna then go ahead. First determine exact sign
of Moon, if it changes sign within given date of birth. Then find the Deccan
(Dreshkaan or D-3) of Moon. It means you will now have 1/3 of day, or about 4
Lagna signs as available options. Sometime, born-in-day (diurnal) or born-in-night
(nocturnal) nativity approach also proves helpful.
(3) When date and large interval of time is known. For example, a person says, he
was born somewhat in morning from 6 am to 12 pm noon. Then you have to choose
an ascendant (Lagna) out of about 3 options (that could rise in given interval of 6
am to 12 pm). Make a list of of 10 to 20 very significant life events. Then try to
fit/superimpose these events with respect to all available 3 Lagna. Then again, use
Bhrigu/Sudarshan Chakra (12-year cycle) to approach correct Lagna same as above.
Sometimes, trend of Vinshottaree Mahaa-dashaa may also prove helpful.
(4) When date and small interval of time is known. In this case, often there is a
uncertainty between two ascendants. This situation is bit easier than the above
situation. For rectification, approach will be the same as above. Using life events
with respect to Bhrigu/Sudarshan Chakra (12-year cycle) and Vinshottaree Antardashaa.
(5) When date and definite time of birth is known, and only minor degree
correction is needed. This is a quite common situation, in which Lagna of Raashi (D1) is known, but exact divisional charts (Varg Chakra) need to rectify. List a few

significant events of life for Rectifying Divisional Charts. It is better to take 4 or

5 events from parental/domestic life for Dwaadashaansh (D-12), 5 events from
marital life for Navaansh (D-9), and 5 events from children's life for Saptaansh
(D-7). First separately rectify these basic Varg Chakra. Then try to align all under
considered Varg.
(6) Whether date, time are correctly known from authentic written record.
Despite, birth time needs to rectify to reach exact Naadee Ansh (150th part of a
rising sign). This is not easy, unless you are at home with Naadee Ansh and subtle
divisions of Tattwa.
For last few decade, KP system has been gained a reliable tool of rectification of
Birth Time with the help of constellation Lord and Sub-lords. Read:
--"Rectification of Birth Time" by K Hariharan.
--"Rectification of Birth Time - An analytical approach" by PS Sastri's. Sastri not
only highlighted ancient techniques, but also provided a practical method of
progression and direction.
--R. Santhanam also dedicated a chapter on Rectification in his widely acclaimed
book, "Essentials of Predictive Hindu Astrology".
Besides above, prenatal epoch and Nasht Jaatakam are the advance aspects of
rectification.

BTR As in Lomash Sanhitaa

The Lomash Sanhitaa translated by Vineet Ji gives two Birth Time Rectification
methods
Checking the accuracy of Lagna (Lagna Rectification) - Two methods for BT
rectification are discussed below (1) Using Gulikaa and
(2) Using Praanapad. Since there are vague methods, in practice, these methods
can at best be used to check the accuracy of the BT only and not to correct it.
1. Use of Gulikaa - Computation of Gulikaa

[O fortunate one! Now listen to the means of computation of Gulikaa. For days beginning with
Sunday, in the sequence 26, 22, 18, 14, 10, 6 and 2, multiply these by the duration of the day and
divide by 30. The Dhruvakas at day begin from the weekday (as given in below table) itself. During
the night multiply (these numbers) by the duration of night. The Dhruvakas at night begin from the
(Lord of the) fifth (day). The ascendant at the time obtained thus shall be the Gulikaa.

Here the word Dhruvakaa is used as a technical term to refer to these numbers.
This is the calculation for Keralite Mandee (the mathematical point at the end of a
full Muhoort with in the Yam of Saturn) rather than the Paraasharee Gulikaa (the
mathematical point at the starting of Saturns Yam), which is termed Gulikaa here.
The rising time of Gulikaa (Mandee) for all the weekdays along with the same in HrMin are tabulated below. Please note that Gulika (Mandi) rises this much time after
Sunrise provided the day or night duration is 12 hours exact. If the day or night
duration changes the rising time also should be adjusted proportionately.

The above tabulation is for days with 30 Naadikaa (12 hours). When there are
increase or decrease in day and night span, proportionate adjustments should be
made in Gulika rising time as well.
Correcting the lagna using GulikaThe method given here is for checking the
accuracy of the given birth time rather than for really correcting the birth time.

[If the Lagna is strong then then correcting of Lagna should be done for Lagna using Gulikaa. If the
Moon Sign is strong then the correcting of Moon sign should be done using Gulikaa. The method is
the same in both cases. If both (Lagna and Moon sign) are devoid of strength then too (the
correction of birth time should be done) using Gulika.]

[The Gulikaa should be in 1-7-5-9 houses from Lagna. For humans and animal Gulikaa can also be in 210 houses from Lagna. For birds Gulikaa can be in 3-7-11 houses from Lagna. For insects, serpents
and aquatic animals the Gulika shall be in the remaining houses (i.e.4-12 houses)]

The condition given to ensure whether the lagna is accurate or not is that - If
Lagna is accurate then Gulikaa will come in houses 1st-2nd-7th- 5th-9th-10th to it
only. Or in other words if the Gulikaa is in 3rd-4th-6th- 8th-11th- 12th from Lagna
then it indicates that the given Lagna is inaccurate. But this condition applies only
if the Lagna is strong. Otherwise make the necessary adjustment in time and move
Lagna to the next or previous sign (whichever is near) so that the above condition
would be satisfied. Even though not told here it should be known that a Lagna
becomes strong
1. when Lagna Lord is strong,
2. when Lagna Lord is placed in Upachaya (1-3-6-10-11) to Lagna,
3. when Mercury or Jupiter aspect or conjunct with Lagna.
The same condition applies to Moon Lagna also when checking whether it is strong
or not. So the point to note is that, if as per the above condition if Lagna is not
strong but instead Moon sign is strong then correction of Moon sign (and not the
Lagna) should be done based on the position of Gulikaa (and all the predictions
should be done based on Moon Lagna in this case and not Lagna). Thus if Moon sign
is strong then, if Gulikaa is not in 3-4-6-8-11-12 houses from Moon sign, it can be
assumed that Moon sign is accurate. If Moon sign is strong and this condition
regarding Gulikaa is not satisfied then make the necessary adjustment in time and
move Moon sign to the next or previous sign (whichever is nearer) so that the
above condition would be satisfied. The proposed position of Gulikaa relative to
Lagna for humans and animals in the above quote is tabulated below.

It is not told whether the Gulikaa should be for the birth of plants etc in the
above quote. The above classification seems to be some how connected to the
classification of signs as Sthal (Land)-Jal (Aquatic)-Sareesrip a (Reptiles and
Insects); less water - in between land and water).

2. Use of Praanapad - Correcting Lagna using Praanapad

[Convert the time past sunrise into Vighatee (Pal) and divide by 15. Add it in terms of sign, degrees
etc to that sign (occupied by Sun), to the 9th sign (9th to the one occupied by Sun) or to the 5th
sign (5th to the one occupied by Sun) depending upon whether Sun is in a movable sign, fixed sign or
dual sign. The resulting sign shall be the Praanapad. Use it to correct the ascendant as previously
described. If the ascendant is not corrected through the Praanapad, Gulikaa or the Moon then it
should be known to be incorrect. For non-movable beings (like trees etc) the Lagna should be
corrected in the same way.]

The steps to calculate Praanapad is clarified below.

(1) Divide the Ishta Kaal (in Vighatee) by 15. (H*2.5*60)
(2) Take away multiples of 12.
(3) Convert the answer in to signs, minutes etc. (2.5=2 Rasi and 15 deg or 15 deg of
Gemini)
(4) Get the exact degree of the Sun in birth chart.
(5) Find out the Char (movable) Raashi in trine to Sun.
(6) Move the Sun to the movable sign which trine to the natal Sun. (for example,
my Sun is in Aquarius 18-59=10-18-59, movable sign is Libra trine to Aquarius. So I
take Sun's degree as Libra 18-59-00 or 6-18-59. When Sun is in Movable sign just
take the degree for same.
(7) Add this figure to figure came from step 3. It is Praanapad.
Praanapad must be in trine to Lagna. If not, make the necessary adjustment in time
so that Praanapad falls in trine of Lagna.
Practically speaking, the difference of even a single Vighatee (24 sec) in birth time
can cause a difference of 1 sign in Praanapad. And the maximum difference that
needs to be made to bring Praanapad to the trine of Lagna is at max 3 Vighatee (1
min 12 sec) difference in given birth time. This is too small a correction and
practically useless. Both these methods (one using Gulikaa and the other using
Praanapad) are very vague and crude methods which should at the most be used
only to check the accuracy of the given birth time, and never to correct it.
Numerous other good and authentic birth time rectification methods supported by

sages are discussed in the book Secrets of Birth Time Rectification (by Sreenadh
OG; Sagar Publications).

Even if one gets some perfect Siddhaant without a millisecond of error, one has to
carry out birth time rectification of few minutes in most cases. My code resulted
in smaller error in birth time which I soon corrected. For instance, correction in
Deshaantar (Longitude) due to the change of Ujjain's longitude from the center of
old town to exact location of the Mahaakaal Mandir resulted in subtraction of 0.63
seconds in my own birth time. True-Day correction also results in a small correction
in Isht Kaal amounting to a few seconds of error in birth time only, small in
comparison to few minutes of errors in most natives.

Skilled Jyotisha is a complex analytical

process which is handled differently by
various Jyotishi. Generally, Jyotisha
rectification process has two stages:
1. Aligning events of public record
with the Vimshottari timeline
(e.g., marriage, birth of children,
death of parents, school diploma,
loss of job, health crisis, etc etc)
2. ensuring that (1) radix D-1 view
(2) the navamsha D-9 view (3)

dashamamsha D-10 view ALL

provide a coherent narrative of
the sequence of public-record
events
It is nearly always true that the actual moment
of the infant's first breath (the point in time
which creates the radical lagna of the kundali)
is earlier than the remembered time, and
frequently a rectification even from an
institutional birth certificate needs to be
moved a bit earlier. Almost never later.
Home birth times tend to be recorded more
accurately if there is someone present who is
not involved in the birth (usually a male).
Otherwise home birth times are often reported
as "dawn" or "near midnight" - very hard to
work with.
Mother's memory of specific time of birth
is as a rule is unreliable; but a general time
such as "near 2am" is probably not a fiction.

With that being said, I've done

readings in the past for people who
say their mother swore upon the
accuracy of a specific birth time.
Years later when they apply for a first
passport and pay to get their govt birth
certificate, the person comes to find
out that the recorded time of birth is
not only hours later than Mom said -but also not even a reasonable
transposition of the accurate time. It's
a fiction of mom's hormone-fogged
birth memory.
I remember a case specifically of a
woman whose mother vigorously
insisted that her daughter had been
born precisely at 08:35 am but (when
she paid to obtain the birth record) the

hospital certificate stated a time of

19:55 -- not even close!
Childbirth can be very stressful and mother's
memories formed in that time of trauma are
often unrealistic. (However every dark cloud
has a silver lining. As one benefit of the
above mother-daughter transaction, where the
mother was incensed that her daughter did not
trust mom's memory, I could look for a time
consistent with mental health issues or
delusion of the mother...)

When no birth time is

available:

I personally do not try to create a birth time

for the native who has absolutely no record of
their time of birth.
Rather, I do what Jyotishi have done in India
for millennia, which is to read the radix
chart from the Chandra Lagna.

Using only Chandra lagna, none of the

varga charts can be calculated, and
timing of major events cannot be
known.
However the Moon's Nakshatra
should be examined carefully,
including the Pada of the Nakshatra if
that can be detected from the native 's
physical appearance.

A very detailed logical analysis of the life

events can indeed be undertaken by a careful
and conscientious Jyotishi who has the time
and inclination to perform a rectification for a
person who has no birth time but a
presumably accurate birth date. (Before my
practice became so busy, I used to be able to
do these occasionally, but I no longer 'have

the time' as the earthlings say!)

If even the date of birth is not known, psychic
methods may be required to locate the date,
and then the time.
Also, the map of the palm may offer an
excellent guide to rectification of the nativity
since the palm-map typically does match the
Jyotisha nativity in all particulars.

Exception:
accurate rectification for
public figures when no
birth time is available

In the case of well-known public figures

whose biographical details are a matter of
public record, a birth time can be accurately
deduced from components such as

the characteristics of the rising

nakshatra,
the bhava of Rahu, placement of
Surya and Chandra in reference to the
public figure's father and mother,
any known health issues (such as
alcoholism or diabetes) should match
bhava-6
timing of marriages, birth of first
child, date of death of parents, etc.
should match an appropriate bhukti of
the Vimshottari dasha

other pieces of public biographical

information which can be matched one by one
until a complete profile is established.
As opposed to a common citizen, the aura of a
public figure has become brightly visible to
their surrounding environment and the
intensity of their Jyotisha graha is usually
quite dramatic.

For a highly recognized public figure the

atmakaraka is nearly always in the navamsha
lagna or navamsha 10th, and frequently the
atmakaraka is also in the dashamsha 1st or
10th. Rarely, if the atmakaraka is not in
kendra of D-9 or D-10, some uttama-graha
must be in kendra 1 or 10.
However the typical situation for a public
figure = atmakaraka in D-9 bhava-1 or bhava10, while the rashi signifying the professional
area = 10th navamsha (e.g., writing
Mithunaya, medicine Kanya, governance
Makara). Lord of 10th navamsha should be
also strong in D-1.
Furthermore the karakamsha in radix is nearly
always an obvious expression of a notable
public career in a specialized skill. For
example for elite politicians, the karakamsha
can be predicted = either bhava 1, 5, 9 or 10;
for the uber-earner billionaires Rahu is nearly
always in 11 and the karakamsha of radix
predictably in 2, 5, 9, or 11. Highly
recognized writers typically have Rahu in 3 or
5, and the karakamsha is frequently 3publishing (screenwriters, 5). However for
those whose fame is attributed to winning
awards like the Nobel Prize or the Pulitzer
Prize, Rahu falls in 11 (awards for
achievement).
Thus for public figures only - this will not
work for just-folks like you and me! - a
rectification to the minute can reasonably be
accomplished by lining up the above factors
then do a quick check for the lagna of the
Shastyamsha D-60. If the atmakaraka is found
in the lagna of the D-60 that will be a great
personality.
Unfortunately, pancha-maha-purusha yoga

has relatively little predictive value and is not

pragmatically related to fame or development
of a public iconic personality. In the nativity
of an average person, PMP yoga may indicate
personal moral integrity perhaps but it says
nothing about public roles.

When an approximate
time is available:

If one knows that one was born "in the

morning" or "in the evening" then that general
knowledge creates a range of hours within
which a search for a more accurate time
becomes justifiable.
The astrologer's willingness to undertake such
a search must be significantly motivated,
because these rectification processes involve
several iterations of checking and rechecking that are extremely time consuming.

the native 's physical appearance is a

useful guideline for setting the radix
lagna. (It helps to know something
about the genetic norms within the
native s family and tribe in order to
determine whether the native 's
complexion and physique is generally
paler, darker, redder, bluer, curlier,
straighter, taller, shorter, muscular or
slender, relative to the general group
characteristics.)
If the native has children, timing of
birth of the first child during a bhukti
of L-1 or L-5 or L-9, is a reliable
indicator of correct radix lagna.
(Angles from Chandra represent
mother's emotional relationship with
the child and a very valuable
predictors of the life experience of
their relationship. However timing of

Timing of marriage during bhukti of
navamsha L-1 or L-7 and also gochara
Rahu-Ketu transit through the
navamsha lagna can help set the rashi
of navamsha lagna. Navamsha lagna
rashi should confirm (or at least not
contradict) the native 's bodily
complexion.

In my experience: if a rectification from the

birth certificate time is required, it will
generally be necessary to set the birth time
*earlier* than recorded.
I suspect this pattern of needing to set earlier
happens because hospitals and midwives
typically record the birth at the time the baby
has fully emerged from the birth canal. In
fact, often enough, the baby takes its first
breath well before even the shoulders are all
the way out. Typically, 1-5 minutes earlier
than recorded time is warranted.
Rarely, I have pushed as far as 10 minutes
earlier than recorded time. I was hesitant to
push as far back as 10 minutes in the one case
where it seemed necessary, but later found out
that the birth in that case was very difficult
with one arm getting stuck backwards and
medical intervention needed to avoid
breaking the tiny arm. Although technically
not "born" yet, the stuck baby's head was out
and he was breathing on his own for several

minutes before the full birth was complete.

In these cases of difficult birth conditions
there are usually other circumstantial pointers.
Often the mother is in a difficult Vimshottari
period. Mom is ill or ambivalent about the
birth, the birth process is not well coordinated
between mother and child, and the child will
have some uncomfortable or delaying graha
in lagna/Chandra lagna to match the mother's
ambivalence about their birth.

One good test of accurate calculations is
whether the stated birth-place-time yields a
sensible Shastyamsha for public figure births.
Given the stated birth time-[;ace, the D-1, D-9
and D-10 should all render a sensible
narrative of the biographies of public figures,

Daylight Saving Time Aaarrgh

The bane of western astrologers, Daylight

Saving Time is fickle and annoying
throughout Eurasia.
For USA births in particular, it is necessary to
be very knowledgeable about the various
passed-then-revoked-then-passed-again state
and local DST rules. A knowledgeable
Jyotishi can determine when it is reasonable
to rectify a birth-time by adding or removing
DST.

of Illinois was beholden to the
farmers, who hated the confusion and
extra work that DST causes them. (A
farmer can't exactly set the cows back

one hour every spring and autumn!)

However, my birth time is recorded in
my grandmother's diary as 1:17 pm

What caused this discrepancy?

The State of Illinois passed a law that

all 1956 legal documents would be
stamped in standard time.
However, the local people in Chicago
-- mainly factory workers -- continued
their habitual practice of "spring
forward, fall back". Most Chicago folk
were not involved in agriculture but
rather in factory work that DID benefit
from more morning daylight.
Regardless of the vicissitudes of the
state legislature, householders
continued their regular habit .

BTW in 1957, the next year, industrial

interests in Chicago held sway over the
farmers' lobby, and 1957 summer birth times
in Chicago are recorded in DST not CST.
The pro-and-con foolishness (and all the
millions spent lobbying and re-legislating it)
finally came to a stop with the federal law in
1966 .

Clearly one hour of birth time can make a

huge difference in the resulting astrological
charts, so be on the lookout for DST as a
rectification possibility.

Consider a DST add-drop not only for

births in the typical Spring/Autumn
change months,
but also for births in the American

Midwest farm states during the 1950's.

Midwest USA examples:

The state of Michigan did not record

DST on birth certificates until the
1960's!
Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana
(don't get me started on Indiana). Birth
certificate times from Minnesota and
Michigan are all questionable until
1966, when federal law imposed
uniformity nationwide.
Major portions of Alaska including
the panhandle switched time zones
several times in the last 50 years and not all software has encoded these
switchbacks.

Knowing the DST rules for each

USA/Canadian state, province, or tribal
reserve; and knowing DST rules governing
"military time" at military hospitals
worldwide; and being willing to try an
adjustment if it seems feasible, are required
tools for the western Jyotishi.
This is a huge amount of detail, and
mistakes will surely be made.

Good ephemeris software is a basic

requirement, but the rules are so
complex and reversals so frequent that
a competent Jyotishi must still be
willing to double-check the software
calculation when birth occurs in a
DST trouble-zone.

For a USA birth, if a chart seems to be

violating Jyotisha rules for multiple life
events and for physical appearance, I will
always take that small initial step of adding or

removing a DST hour on the birth-time, to see

if that small and reasonable adjustment makes
all the pieces jump into place.

The U.S. Military says:

The most obvious change will be the

navamsha; it helps to know the time of
marriage (often occurs during periods
of 1/7 navamsha) and the profession
of the native (10th navamsha) in order
confirm the potential correctness of
the adjustment.

AM and PM:

Over the period of 30 years astrological

practice, I have found that rectifying a
reported birth time from AM to PM (or PM to
AM) may cause the puzzle pieces to fall into
place.
AM and PM times can get swapped during

the verbal communication process.

Sometimes a chart does not behave correctly timing of marriage and children violates
Jyotisha rules, and the person's character does
not match the lagna + Chandra lagna as
calculated.
In these cases, unless the Jyotishi can see the
original birth certificate, it may be warranted
to try reversing AM and PM in the birth time.

If AM-PM reversal does cause

marriage and childbirth timing to line
up properly, proceed then to confirm
basic physical appearance indications,
timing of marriage, family,
educational or career milestones,
whether navamsha L-10's role in the
adjusted radix confirms the native 's
career specialty etc.
If the Vimshottari timing is
measurably more consistent with the
native 's true history, we can presume
that making an AM-PM birth-time
switch is warranted.

AM-PM rectification may possibly even be

acceptable when the birth certificate is in
hand, if such a reversal yield dramatically
better conformance with Jyotisha rules for
major events in life. If the certificate was not
issued by a modern hospital, clerical errors
are more likely.

Take this liberty with some caution,

because adjusting a birth time adds a
level of interpretive complexity to any
reading.
In addition to rational justification,
Confirm intuitively that your psychic
certainty level is higher with the

adjusted time.

What is Needed to set

up a Rectification
Analysis?

We need to know several and possibly dozens

of life-facts in order to set up the rectification
process.

Do it yourself?

First, your date and place of birth

(these must be known precisely.
Times near midnight are extra
challenging).
Then, the range of possible birth times
within approximately one hour of
accuracy. Please let me know the
beginning and ending time in the
range of analysis.(For example, if you
were born between 0830 and 0930,
0830 would be the start point for the
analysis and 0930 would be the end
point of the analysis.)
Then, we need a list of your key life
events. As many of these as you can
provide will be helpful. Any type of
dramatic or milestone event is useful.
For example, death of family
members, birth of children, marriage
or divorce or remarriage, taking of
holy vows, school graduations,
important examinations, change of

or accident, and any other event that

Most modern Jyotisha software has a birthtime-change tool that allows the user to move
the birth time up and down via 1-minute (or
less) increments; visually one can watch
various lagna change on the 16 varga.
Probably the most determinative choice =
rashi upon the 10th navamsha. The rashi on
the 10th navamsha should match the real-life
career.
For example a nurse would normally have
Karkata on the 10th navamsha whereas an
athlete would have Mesha and a singer would
have Vrishabha, an economist or
philanthropist Kumbha and a politician would
be Simha. Attorneys can be Kanya
(arguments) or Thula (contracts). Similar
rules for matching the dashamsha - make sure
that the lord of radix-10 gives the proper
karaka results in dashamsha. For example if
the person is a university professor or a
religious teacher, the lord of radix-10 should
be featured in the dashamsha-9. If the person
is an at-home wife and mother, Chandra
should control the lagna or 10th of the D-10
and her 4th house of the radix similarly

should be favorable (to allow her to stay

home).

Budhabeing in bhava-6 and in
Karkata (Cancer) is a good indication
of a very young manjoining the navy!
Year-2000 = overseas "wandering"
should = a period of either L-12 or
Ketuin the Vimshottari dasha. The
period of wandering in foreign lands =
Rahu/Shani and Shani = L-12. That
works fine.
But since Shani = L-12 for both

Meena and Kumbha lagnas, this fact

doesn't advance our quest for the
correct radix lagna : )
Running the dharma center = bhava11 may not pay much (or anything at
all!) but it does count as volunteer
work;it does receive social
recognitionas work which has social
worth. More proof that whichever
graha becomes lord of 10th navamsha,
that graha should rule bhava-11 in
radix.
For years, you had paid work as a
computer programmer. This is
connections-work, making electronic
systems talk to each other. And I don't
know for sure, but you might be using
computer work mainly as a way of
meeting goals like saving money for
the next dharma trip.
I.e. you are not that much egoinvolved in the prestige of the work,
you just do it instrumentally to meet
short-term goals. this points again to a
search for alord-of-10thnavamshawhich is also radix bhava11

Your dad's death in Rahu/Shukra only

makes sense from Kumbha lagna,
where Shukra is "8th-from-9th" (endof-cycle for father) and strong in
swakshetra.

You bought a house in Rahu/Shukra.

Shukra needs to be in bhava-4 for that
period to produce an event of buying a
house.
With Meena lagna, Shukra occupies
bhava-3, which would give the loss of
a house.

The dharma-lord+ L-9, should

indicate your advanced dharma
practice.
In Kumbha lagna, Dharma Lord =
Shukra (Venus) in a kendra and
swakshetra - the Venus in Taurus in
bhava-4. Then a group of felicitous
planets including your money-maker
Guru go into the bhagya 5th radix,
which puts Guru's drishti upon dharma
bhava.
So even though mystical, detached
and lawless Ketu occupies dharma
bhava (gurus are potent but unreliable,
leave their bodies, generally wander)
the Guru drishti is a big plus for
having the money and confidence to

If Meena were lagna, dharma lord
would be Kuja (Mars) in bhava-4

dharmasthana. Therefore, I think
Meena in your case just does not
reveal your essential dharma
empowerment.

2004 in Rahu-Shani-Shani -Vimshottari period and Shani =

If Meena was radix lagna, the event
when the dharma found you would
have remained part of your social life
(11) or your imaginative life (12), but
it wouldn't have redefined all your
values, especially your sensitivity

A: Thanks for your note. To get started on a

process? I do have a birth
certificate, but the time
seems to be wrong ...

rectification of birth time, we'll need a list of

your important life events, such as diplomas,
marriages, children, illness, accidents,
inheritances, adventures, -- anything that was
significant or life-defining (so far in your life)
for you, or for society.
Items of career and profession are also very
important in identifying "swamsha" -- the
"soul's portion" -- which is the Nakshatra
rising in the navamsha lagna. The reason that
having your career/professional info (in your
life so far) is so helpful, is that the rashi on
the 10th navamsha is an accurate indicator of
career.
Also each pada of the rising Nakshatra has its
own identity. In the navamsha, the rising pada
(quarter of a Nakshatra = one quarter of 13
degrees 20 seconds). Different authors have
different viewpoints on the characterizes of
the pada (I have a few author comments
posted on my website, and you can see how
different the viewpoints are based on author
culture and personality). It makes a difference
whether the person is male or female, how the
Nakshatra express in the nativity...
So, I might have some narrowing-down
questions to ask you as the rectification
proceeds. It will take several emails between
us, most likely.

life provide the best objective evidence.
Job titles are helpful, but what is more
important is how you see yourself in

manager" in a big science company. But I
didn't see myself as a scientist or a computer
techie. I saw what I did as teaching, because I
was helping people learn to use their
computers better (this was a long time ago,
when PC's were new.)
I have Mithuna (Punarvasu Nakshatra ) in
navamsha lagna, and Guru rules my 10th
navamsha. So, I'm a teacher always -- but the
job environment can be a university, a
corporation, a high-altitude base camp, a
website, a kid's playground, a big meeting ...
almost anyplace.
It helps to know your job titles but even more
important, how do you see your service
vocation (thus far in your life). That will help
if there is a rashi change within the two
possible Nakshatra, My experience with BC
times is that they are most commonly
"late". The actual birth is often 1-10 minutes
earlier, with approximately 3-5 minutes
earlier than the stated time being very
common indeed.
I imagine what happens is that, at least in a

hospital birth, the nurses are much more

concerned with having a healthy baby than
they are with recording the child's first breath,
and as a result the birth is recorded as
"completed" when the child has fully emerged
and its vital signs are approved.

If the 12:59 PM time of birth, which you are

currently using, is known from a certificate of
birth signed by the attending physician in a
hospital, it is probably correct.
If the birth time is recorded from someone's
memory, a long time after the birth happened,
it might be incorrect.
The one person who is the least reliable, in
my experience, for providing accurate birth
times, is the Mother! Mothers often do not
remember the child's time correctly, and when
shown a birth certificate from a hospital with
a time that contradicts mom's personal
memory, the Mother may be very surprised
about how wrong their memory is! This odd
state of affairs does makes sense given the
intensity and trauma of the birth experience,
when the astral (no-time) and physical planes
are so intermixed.

Sometimes I find benefit in setting slightly

earlier a birth-certificate recorded time,
perhaps one minute or two minutes earlier, in
case the navamsha lagna rashi would shift by
doing so, and only in response to known facts
about the native 's profession.
For example
The rashi of the 10th navamsha is an accurate
indicator of profession. If this indicator seems
incorrect, e.g. if the person is a long-time
schoolteacher which would be Brihaspati, but
indeed Kuja has become lord of the 10th
navamsha, which would suggest a military
professional or an engineer, then sometimes only sometimes - shifting the birth forward
one or two minutes can cause the 10th
navamsha lord to match better with the adult
profession.
However, I usually don't make adjustments to
the birth-certificate stated time. That is a lot
of work which requires having a good amount
of background data on the person in question.
Local village astrologer, who knows his
clients' life stories and character very
personally, is in a much better position to
make corrections to the recorded birth time.
However, usually they don't have to make
corrections, because they were present
personally at the birth!
Rectifications are labor intensive and
expensive. If you have a reliable birth
certificate time, I would recommend to use
that time without further challenge, unless (as
in the example above) there is some major
item that could be pushed to a better match by
making a very small time adjustment.

changes every 15 seconds. I've looked at
Jyotisha nativities for numerous sets of twins,
who are typically born 1-5 minutes apart.
There are always significant variations
between the nativities of each twin, present in
at least one of the varga.

However, if you as an
astrologer, received two
identical horoscopes as a
result of such simultaneous
but independent births
taking place at the same
geographical location,
would your readings be
identical, or is there some
other intuitive or spiritual
ability that will enable you
to distinguish them?

In practice, I look first for variations in the

Dwadashamsha which reveal that each of the
two twins have a different relationship to their
parents. Then I proceed through the more
delicate varga charts, looking for variation in
vehicle behavior (D-16), spiritual ambition
(D-20), tendency toward accident and injury
(D-30) and others up to the D-60.
I understand your question, about it's being
logically possible. I've never confronted two
absolutely identical births, with same time to
the second and exact same long+Lat.
Prima facie, I would say that Jyotisha is not a
good tool in the logically possible setting of
two children born at the same second, perhaps
on two different floors of the same hospital.
To distinguish the nativities in this
extraordinary situation, I would recommend
using another tool, such as palm reading, to
distinguish the paths of two humans born in
extremely close time-and-space settings.

Rectifications are complex and many Jyotishi

have their own style of analysis in the
rectification process.
I personally would say that your wife's
navamsha can be one piece of the puzzle, but
it could not be the sole determinant. As
Suryanarian Rao (grandfather of BV Raman)
used to say to his grandson, "astrology is a
science of tendencies".
We are looking for several corroborating
matches which point in the same direction. So
we will need at least one other factor to feel
confident in the choice between Kanya or
Simha lagna in D-9.
10th navamsha
I rely partly upon adult career to set the
navamsha lagna. If the choice is between
Kanya and Simha, that means the career
should have distinctive attributes of either
Budha (Mithuna on 10th navamsha) or
Shukra (Vrishabha on 10th navamsha).
Kanya navamsha folk

are often involved in media publishing

and production (Mithuna) travel and
tours, the training style of teaching
(short-term instruction, not diploma
courses but technical trainings),
writing including songwriting, radiotelevision and films, and every variety
of business administration including
sales, advertising, marketing, public
relations, meetings, calendars,
planning, etc.

They are businessfolk who often own

their business. If not they are
generally well-liked managers (manos
= hands, Budha) in larger concerns.
Look to the role of Budha in radix to
establish the type and success of
business.

Simha navamsha folk

are often professionally involved in

luxuries, including food: wealth,
banking, fashion design, interior
architecture, ornaments and articles
for women, perfumes, fine oils and
wines, delicious edibles of all kinds
(Vrishabha = the cows and the fields)
beautiful song and musical
instruments, matters of face such as
teeth, jaw, eyes, hair, and face;
anything to do with the accumulation
and maintenance of luxurious values
(Laxmi).
They can also be academics charged
with maintenance of large knowledge
collections (Saraswati) such as
historical libraries, musical
recordings, and museum art
collections.
Shukra can be a custodian of capital
wealth hoards without necessarily
owning the stash; sometimes the
method of ownership is educated
ability to appreciate = put a price upon
valuable goods.

navamsha. If Radix L-10 is well-disposed
within the navamsha the career goes well with

Regarding the relationship of the spouse's
navamsha to one's own, or in general to the
relationship between the nativities of married
partners, here is what I usually look for to
"prove" the marriage.

As a general rule, the rashi of the

spouse's radix moon should match
one's own navamsha (1) 1-7 axis, or
(2) Rahu-Ketu axis, or (3) in rare
cases, the woman's radix moon rashi
will match one pole of the axis of the
man's navamsha Shukra. (3) is a
stretch of the principle and frankly I
do not see this very often.
The reason I mention this matching of
each partner's natal Chandra rashi with
the other partner's navamsha axes of
either D-9 lagna or D-9 nodes, is that
in rectification cases if the spouse's
Chandra rashi does not match the
native 's navamsha Rahu-Ketu axis,
and the navamsha lagna is unknown,
then the rashi of the spouse's radix
Chandra is a likely match for the
missing navamsha 1-7.

spouse's milestone events

Events in the spouse's life can be timed using

one's own navamsha.

If there has been a notable event in the

spouse's life such as receiving
university diploma, death of the
spouse's parent, significant illness or
injury -- these should all be
corroborated in the partner's
navamsha.

For example, I recently saw a woman whose

husband's father died during her Shani bhukti.
In her navamsha, Shani in lord of 7th (death)
from 9th (father) from Guru (Guru = karaka
for male mate in the nativity of a married
woman). In her case, Guru was also the lord
of the 7th navamsha, so Guru gains extra
power to represent the life events of her
husband.

If your wife's life thus far has

produced notable milestones, try to
justify those milestones using Simha
lagna for yourself or Kanya; one of
these rashi-lagna usually will give a
better result than the other.

RE: the method by which the correct lagna is
properly determined, it involves looking at
the role each graha would play if lagna-1
were correct, then looking at the role each
graha would play if lagna-2 were correct.
For example, the bhava of the Sun should
indicate the social position-profession of the
father while the bhava of the Moon should
indicate the social position-profession of the
mother.
Identifying the correct lagna is not an exercise
in psychological typology ("Sag fits me
better") but rather a comparative analysis of
the two possible arrangements of the 12
bhava matched to your family relationships,
profession, mate, health situation, and
biographical life events as predicted by the
Vimshottari Dasha.
Even if you're not ready to do a complete
verification of birth time, at least you can be
certain that DST did apply in Iowa in August

of 1961!
Unfortunately, Jyotisha software written
outside USA may not be accurate for US
births before 1966. (1966 was the year that
the US Congress finally legislated a standard
DST system for the entire country. Before
that, there were hundreds of state and county
time-keeping variations and it was a huge
record-keeping mess.)
If you are interested in Jyotisha, it's a good
idea to invest in some *reputable* Jyotisha
software which correctly calculates the arcane
rules of American DST.
I recommended Shri Jyoti Star but I'm happy
to say that there are several good Jyotisha
software packages to suit different tastes now
available in the marketplace. Narasimha Rao's
excellent and accurate Jagannatha Hora s/w
is completely free .

by "my nakshatra" do you mean Nakshatra of
radical lagna or Nakshatra of Chandra? Are
you calculating the kundali using an accurateto-the-minute time of birth? (ideally, from
your hospital birth certificate) For both
Nakshatra of radical lagna and Nakshatra of
Chandra, an accurate birth time is required.
USA federal law standardized DST for all
states in 1966 and Indianapolis did not change

after 1966. However, Indiana births can be

tricky because even after 1966 there were
numerous time-zone exceptions in the NW
and SW corners of the state of Indiana in
counties which need to coordinate with
Illinois for economic reasons. (Illinois is
central time and Indiana is eastern time,
except for these special counties.) Even
though Indianapolis births after 1966 are not
troublesome for DST calculations, the Sept11 date that you quote is near the boundary of
autumn DST time-change.
Jyotisha software calculations must be
properly programmed to adjust for DST.
Therefore I recommend for USA births that
occur near the stop-start boundaries of DST,
try to use Jyotisha software coded in the USA
and not the websites hosted in India and
elsewhere.
American DST rules are somewhat peculiar
(OK, very peculiar) and Daylight-SavingTime rules are sometimes not properly coded
into the internationally programmed s/w .
However the DST rules with all their
peculiarities are usually correctly rendered in
USA-coded s/w. People who live here in
USA realize that while DST is annoying the
rules have to be coded properly to yield
correct results.
But even perfect software doesn't take all of
the guesswork out of it. While state law might
officially require all births to be recorded in
standard time, the birth-assisting nurses might
have recorded the local time showing on their
wristwatch. Even with superb software (I use
Shri Jyoti Star) rectification might be needed
due to the vicissitudes of American DST.

Ch. 18. Effects of 7th House

1. O excellent of the Brahmins, listen to me, detailing the effects of the 7th House.
If 7th Lord is in his own Ri, or in exaltation, one will derive full happiness
through his wife (and marriage).2. Sick wife. Should 7th Lord be in 6th, 8th, or
12th, the wife will be sickly. This however does not apply to own House, or
exaltation placement, as above.

3. Excessive Libidinousness/Death of Wife. If Venus is in 7th, the native will be

exceedingly libidinous. If Venus conjunct a malefic in any House, it will cause
loss of wife.
4-5. The 7th lord. Should 7th Lord be endowed with strength and be conjunct
with, or be aspected by a benefic, the native will be wealthy, honourable, happy
and fortunate. Conversely, if 7th Lord is in fall, or is combust, or is in an enemy
Ri, one will acquire sick wives and many wives.
6. Plurality of wives If 7th Lord is in a Ri of Saturn, or of Venus and be
aspected by a benefic, there will be many wives. Should 7th Lord be particularly
in exaltation, the same effects will come to pass.
7-8. Miscellaneous matters. The native will befriend barren females, if Sun is in
7th. Moon therein will cause association with such female, as corresponding to
the Ri, becoming 7th. Mars, placed in 7th, will denote association with
marriageable girls (those with menses), or with barren females. Mercury
indicates harlots, mean females and females, belonging to traders community.
Wife of a Brahmin, or a pregnant female will be in the natives association, if
Jupiter is in 7th. Base females and females, having attained their courses, are
denoted by Saturn, Rahu/Ketu in 7th.
8-9. Mars denotes a female with attractive breasts. Saturn indicates sick and
weak spouse. Jupiter will bring a spouse with hard and prominent breasts.
Venus will bring one with bulky and excellent breasts.
10-13. Malefics in 12th and 7th, while decreasing Moon is in 5th denote, that the
native will be controlled by spouse, who will be inimical to the race (or family). If
7th House is occupied, or owned by Saturn/Mars, the native will beget a harlot,
as his spouse, or he will be attached to other illegally. Should Venus be in a
Navamsa of Mars, or in a Rasi of Mars, or receive a Aspect from, or be conjunct
with Mars, the native will kiss the private parts of the female. If Venus is so
related to Saturn, the native will kiss the private parts of the male.
14-15. Worthy spouse. The native will beget a spouse endowed with (the seven
principal) virtues, who will expand his dynasty by sons and grandsons, if the 7th
Lord is exalted, while 7th is occupied by strong Lagna Lord and a benefic.
16. Evils to spouse. If 7th House, or its Lord is conjunct with a malefic the natives
wife will incur evils, especially, if 7th House, or its Lord is bereft of strength.

17. Loss of spouse. If 7th Lord is devoid of strength and is relegated to 6th, 8th,
or 12th, or, if 7th Lord is in fall, the natives wife will be destroyed (i.e. she will
die early).
18. Lack of conjugal felicity. If Moon is in 7th, as 7th Lord is in 12th and the
Karaka (indicator Venus) is bereft of strength, the native will not be endowed
with marital happiness.
19-21. Plurality of wives. One will have two wives, if 7th Lord is in fall, or in a
malefic Ri along with a malefic, while 7th House, or the 7th Navamsa belong to
a eunuch planet. If Mars and Venus are in 7th, or, if Saturn is 7th, while the
Lord of Lagna is in 8th, the native will have 3 wives. There will be many wives, if
Venus is in a Dual Ri, while its Lord is in exaltation, as 7th Lord is endowed
with strength.
22. Timing of marriage (upto Sloka 34). If 7th Lord is in a benefics House (or in
9th, as Subha Ri so means), while Venus is exalted, or is in own Ri, the native
will marry at the age of 5, or 9.
23. If Sun is in 7th, while his depositor is conjunct with Venus, there will be
marriage at 7th, or 11th year of age.
24. Venus in 2nd, while 7th Lord is in 11th will give marriage at the age of 10, or
16.
25. Marriage will take place during the 11th year, if Venus is in an angle from
Lagna, while Lagna Lord is in Capricorn, or Aquarius.
26. The native will marry at 12, or l9, if Venus is in an angle from the Lagna,
while Saturn is in 7th counted from Venus.
27. Should Venus be in 7th from Moon, while Saturn is in 7th from Venus,
marriage will be in the 18th year.
28. Marriage will be in the 15th year, if 2nd Lord is in 11th, while Lagna Lord is
in 10th.
29. An exchange between the Lords of 2nd and 11th will bring marriage 13 years
after birth.
30. Ones 22nd/27th year will confer marriage, if Venus is in 7th from the 8th
House (i.e. 2nd from Lagna), while his depositor is conjunct with Mars.

31. Should 7th Lord be in 12th, while the natal Lord is in 7th in Navamsa,
marriage will be in 23rd/26th year of age.
32. Either the 25th year, or the 33rd year will bring marriage, if 8th Lord is in
7th, as Venus is in Navamsa Lagna.
33. Should Venus be in 9th from 9th (i.e. in 5th House), while Rahu is in one of
the said Houses (i.e. in 5th/9th), marriage will take place during 31st, or 33rd
year.
34. The native will marry at 30, or 27, if Venus is in Lagna, while the 7th Lord is
in 7th itself.
35-39. Timing of wifes death. Loss of wife will occur in the 18th year, or 33rd
year of age of the native, if 7th Lord is in fall, while Venus is in 8th. One will lose
his spouse in his 19th year, if 7th Lord is in the 8th, while 12th Lord is in 7th.
The natives wife will die within three days of marriage due to snake bite, if the
native has Rahu in 2nd and Mars in 7th. If Venus is in 8th, while his depositor is
in a Ri of Saturn, death of wife will take place during the natives 12th, or 21st
year of age. Should the ascendat Lord be in his Ri of debilitation, as 2nd Lord
is in 8th, loss of wife will occur in the 13th year of age.
40-41. Three marriages. Should Moon be in 7th from Venus, while Mercury is in
7th from Moon and 8th Lord is in 5th (from the Lagna), there will be marriage
in 10th year followed by another in the 22nd year and yet another in the 33rd
year.
42. Death of wife. lf 6th, 7th and 8th are in their order occupied by Mars, Rahu
and Saturn, the natives wife will not live (long).
Ch. 20. Effects of 9th House
(1) Combinations for Fortunes. O Brahmin, now listen to the effects of 9th
House. One will be fortunate (or affluent), if 9ths Lord is in 9th House with
strength.
(2) Should Jupiter be in 9th House, while 9ths Lord is in an angle and Lagnas
Lord is endowed with strength, one will be extremely fortunate.
3. Fortunate (Affluent) Father. If 9ths Lord is with strength, as Venus is in 9th,
while Jupiter is in an angle from 1st House, the natives father is fortunate.

4. Indigent Father. If 9ths Lord is debilitated, while the 2nd and/or the 4th from
9th House is occupied by Mars, the natives father is poor.
5. Long-living Father. Should 9ths Lord be in deep exaltation, while Venus is in
an angle from 1st House and Jupiter is in the 9th from Navma Lagna, the
father of the native will enjoy a long span of life.
6. Royal Status for Father. If 9ths Lord is an angle and receives a Aspect from
Jupiter, the natives father will be a king endowed with conveyances, or be equal
to a king.
7. Wealthy and Famous Father. Should 9ths Lord be in 10th House, while 10ths
Lord receives a Aspect from a benefic the natives father will be very rich and
famous.
8-9. Virtuous and Devoted to Father. Should Sun be in deep exaltation, as 9ths
Lord is in 11th House, the native will be virtuous, dear to the king and devoted to
father. If Sun is in a trine from Lagna, while 9ths Lord is in 7th in conjunct with,
or receiving a Aspect from Jupiter, the native will be devoted to his father.
10. Fortunes etc. Acquisition of fortunes, conveyances and fame will follow the
32nd year of age, if 9ths Lord is in 2nd, while 2nds Lord is in 9th.
11. Inimical to Father. There will be mutual enmity between the father and the
native, if Lagnas Lord is in 9th House, but with the Lord of 6th. Further, the
natives father will be of contemptible disposition.
12. Begged Food. If 10ths Lord and 3rds Lord are bereft of strength, while 9ths
Lord is in fall, or combust the native will go begging for his food.
13-25. Combinations for Fathers Death. The father of the native would have
passed away prior to the natives birth, if Sun is in 6th, 8th, or 12th House, as 8ths
Lord is in 9th House, 12ths Lord is in 1st House and 6ths Lord is in 5th House.
Should Sun be in 8th House, while 8ths Lord is in 9th, the natives father will pass
away within a year of his birth. If the Lord of 12th House is in 9th House, while
9ths Lord is in its debilitation Navma, the natives father will face his end
during the 3rd, or the 16th year of the native. Death of father will occur in the
2nd, or the 12th year, if Lagnas Lord is in 8th House, as 8ths Lord is with Sun.
Should Rahu be in the 8th from 9th, as Sun is in the 9th from 9th, death of father
will take place in the 16th, or the 18th year of the native. If Saturn is in the 9th
from Moon, as Sun is with Rahu, the natives father will die in the 7th, or the 19th
year of the native. The native in his 44th year will lose his father, if 9ths Lord is

in 12th, as 12ths Lord is in 9th. If Lagnas Lord is in 8th House, as Moon is in

Suns Navma, the native in his 35th, or 41st year will lose his father. One will
lose his father in the 50th year, if Sun, being the Lord of 9th, is conjunct Mars
and Saturn. If Sun is in the 7th from 9th House, as Rahu is in the 7th from 3rd
House, the 6th, or 25th year of the native will be fatal for father. If Saturn is in
the 7th from 8th House, as Sun is in the 7th from Saturn, the ages of 21, 26, or 30
will be fatal for the father. If 9ths Lord is in its debilitation Ri, while his
depositor is in 9th House, the native will lose his father at the age of 26, or 30.
Thus the Jyotishyais may know the effects.
26. Fortunes. One will enjoy abundant fortunes, if Venus is in deep exaltation
and be in the company of 9ths Lord, as Saturn is in 3rd.
27-28. Fortunate Periods. Abundant fortunes be acquired after the 20th year, if
9th has Jupiter in it, as its Lord is in an angle from Lagna. Should Mercury be in
his deep exaltation, as 9ths Lord is in 9th itself, abundant fortunes will be earned
after the 36th year.
29. Should Lagnas Lord be in 9th, as 9ths Lord is in Lagna and Jupiter is in 7th,
there will be gains of wealth and conveyances.
30. Lack of Fortunes. If Rahu is in the 9th from 9th House, as his depositor is in
8th House and 9ths Lord is in fall, the native be devoid of fortunes.
31. Food by Begging. Should Saturn be in 9th House along with Moon, as Lagnas
Lord is in fall, the native will acquire food by begging.
32. O Brahmin, these are the effects related to 9th House. I have explained
briefly. These may be estimated with the help of the state of the Lords of Lagna
and 9th House and in other manners as well.
Ch. 19. Effects of 8th House
1. Long Life. O excellent of the Brahmins, listen to me speak on the effects of 8th
House. If 8ths Lord is in an angle, long life is indicated.
2. Short Life. Should 8ths Lord join Lagnas Lord, or a malefic and be in 8th
itself, the native will be short lived.
3. Saturn and 10ths Lord about Longevity. Similarly consider Saturn and 10ths
Lord in the matter of longevity. 10ths Lord is in 8th along with a malefic Planet
and/or Lagnas Lord.

4-7. Long Life. There will be long life, if 6ths Lord is in 12th, or, if 6ths Lord is in
6th, as 12ths Lord is in 12th, or, if 6ths Lord and 12ths Lord are in Lagna and
8th. If the Lords of 5th, 8th and 1st House are in own Navmaas, own Ris, or
in friendly Ris, the native will enjoy a long span of life. Should the Lords of
Lagna, 8th and 10th House and Saturn are all disposed severally in an angle, in a
trine, or in 11th House, the subject will live long. Like these, there are many
other Yogas, dealing with the issue of longevity. The strength and weakness of
the Planets concerned be estimated in deciding longevity.
8-13. Short Life. Ones span of life will be between 20 and 32 years, if Lagnas
Lord is weak, while 8ths Lord is an angle. The native will only be short-lived, if
8ths Lord is in fall, while 8th House has a malefic in it and 1st House is bereft of
strength. Death will be instant at birth, if 8th House, 8ths Lord and 12th House
are all conjunct malefics. Malefics in angles and/or trines and benefics in 6th
and/or 8th House, while 1st House has in it 8ths Lord in fall: this Yoga will cause
immediate end. If 5th and 8th House and 8ths Lord are all conjunct malefics, the
life span will be very brief. Within a month of birth, death will befall the child, if
8ths Lord is in 8th itself, while Moon is with malefics and be bereft of beneficial
Aspect.
14-15. Long Life (again). One will be long-lived, if Lagnas Lord is in exaltation,
while Moon and Jupiter are, respectively, in 11th and 8th House. If Lagnas Lord
is exceedingly strong and receives a Aspect from a benefic, which is placed in an
angle, the person concerned will be wealthy, virtuous and long-lived.
