HECKER QUOTE

The souls attention must be withdrawn from external,

created things, and turned inward towards God exclusively
before its union with Him; and this transformation is a
great, painful, and wonderful work, and so much the more
difficult and painful as the souls attention has been
attracted and attached to transitory things. (On the
Guidance of the Holy Spirit, PV 133)
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person
who is ill, and you believe something miraculous has happened,
please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP, at (202) 269-2519 and tell
him your story.

COLLECTION FOR CHRISTMAS FLOWERS

There is still time to give donations for Christmas flowers.
If you wish to donate in memory of someone, write their
name on the envelope. Envelopes are located on the back
counter of the church. Many thanks to those who have
already donated.

We are in the process of planning a new fundraiser, a crab

dinner in Feb. or Mar. We need volunteers to help with
this event. There will be minimum kitchen prep all food
will be pre-cooked/purchased. We will need help to
recruit & direct volunteers, direct kitchen work, clean up &
set up, decorations, dishwashing, & ticket sales. We also
need input on the many details: dinner only or dinner & a
dance, childcare, and others. There is a basic plan to
begin working with, but we need your ideas to help make
this a wonderful FUNraiser as well as a FUNDraiser.
COME HELP US PLAN! Sunday, Dec. 28, 10:45am,
Carvlin Hall.

WERE GLAD YOU ARE HERE!

If you are new to the parish, visiting from across town, across the country, or from other parts of the world, welcome & thank
you for worshiping with us! Fill out one of the Welcome Cards in the pew racks and drop it in the collection basket or give to
one of the priests. Stop by after Mass and introduce yourself.
If you have any questions, please contact anyone on staff.

HECKER QUOTE

To bring back into the fold of the

Church a people who once were
in it, & have strayed from it, is a
more difficult task than to convert
a people who are ignorant of
Christianity. (Egypt, PV, 249)

Day

BAMBINELLI BLESSING

Blessing the Bambinelli (Italian for Jesus figurine) is a great Christmas

tradition. This year we are inviting everyone who attends the 6pm Family
Mass on Christmas Eve to bring the baby Jesus from their home crche to
be blessed.

Pastoral Corner
Isaac Hecker says of the incarnation, "Thus the Catholic Savior is not an abstract Savior, nor a dead savior, separated
from us by nineteen centuries, but a real living, personal savior, dwelling in the midst of us, even in our very hearts our hearts' life!"
One of the signs of Christmas is the decoration of colored lights on trees, on homes, even on the tops of construction
cranes. When I look at these lights I think of each of our souls shining brightly in the darkness. As believers in Christ
we bring warmth into the lives of those around us. As in the holy family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph the love we share in
our families reaches out across space and time to touch others.
Soon it will be Christmas, the season in which remember that we have a living savior, as Isaac Hecker says, which
makes everything we do vested with eternal significance. Every little act of kindness, every sincere apology, every act
of understanding in our family is joined to the love of the living savior in our midst. It is like a brightly colored light in
the darkness.
Have a blessed Christmas.
Fr. Bill

Year-end giving is beneficial to both the donor from the

tax benefits received while at the same time providing
the parish with a gift that affirms our priorities and
values. We have many reasons to invest in the parishs
future. Being a good steward recognized that we offer
thanksgiving to God and help to maintain a parish
community that advances the Paulist mission and
provides the spiritual growth we all embrace as part of
our Catholic faith. Charitable gift annuities, stocks and
bonds, real property, charitable remainder trust,
employee match, and a bequest in your will and/or
estate plans are just some of the ways to provide St.
Philip Neri with a gift. It is by giving what we are able
that we demonstrate care for our parish family that
reaps the rewards form our gifts. The Paulist Fathers,
staff and the entire parish community offers its
appreciation for gifts of time, talent and treasure
throughout the year as well as those who are able to
provide a year-end gift. It is in giving to our faith
community through time, talent, and treasure that
brings us together and exemplifies the unified sense of
responsibility we have for the parish. If you have
questions, please speak with Fr. Charlie or contact
Jeanne at the parish business office at 503-231-4955,
ext. 103. Thank you.
