Newtons Laws of Motion

ASSERTION REASON TYPE

1. Assertion: When walking on ice, it is better to take short steps.
Reason: Frictional force depends on the normal reaction and normal reaction
depends on the inclination of the reaction of the ground to the vertical.
2. A: A rocket moves forward by pushing the surrounding air backwards.
R: To every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
3. A: There is a limit beyond which the polishing of a surface increases frictional
resistance rather than decreasing.
R: It is reasonable to expect the coefficient of friction to exceed unity.
4. A: we can predict the direction of motion of a body from the direction of the force
acting on it.
R: The rate of change of momentum is equal to the net force acting on it.
5. A: A monkey holds one end of a mass less rope, which passes over a frictionless
pulley. A mirror, which has the same weight as the monkey is attached to the other
end of the rope at the monkeys level. The monkey while climbing up or down, it
can see its image.
R: If the monkey goes up with acceleration, the tension in the rope must be
greater than the weight of the monkey and the same tension will be effective on
the mirror.
6. A: A helium balloon in a closed car moves to the back of the car when the car
accelerates.
R: Every body continues in its state of rest or in motion unless acted by an
unbalance force.
7. A: A table cloth can be pulled from a table without dislodging the dishes.
R: To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
8. A: When a body tends to slide down an inclined plane, force of friction acts up the
plane.
R: Friction always opposes the relative motion.
9. A: A block of mass 10 kg when suspended by two light spring balances in series
shows 5 kg in both.
R: The tension in the springs is same.
10. A: A reference frame attached to earth is non-inertial.
R: Since the earth undergoes rotation and revolution, frame cannot be inertial.
11. A: A particle at rest in one frame is found to be moving with a constant velocity
when seen from the other frame.
R: Both the frames are inertial in nature.
12. A: Angle of repose is equal to the angle of limiting friction.
R: when the body is just at the point of motion, the force of friction this stage is
called as limiting friction.
13. A: A large crate is placed on the bed of a truck, but not tied down. As the truck
accelerates forward, the crate remains at rest relative to the truck.
R: The crate accelerates due to frictional force exerted by the floor of the truck on
the crate.
14. A: In question 13, the driver suddenly applies brakes and crate moves forward.
R: If the driver applies brakes, the crate will not move forward due to friction.
