SPECIALISTS IN LIFE SKILLS CLASSROOMS


Speech-Language Pathology Support in Life Skills
Classrooms

Identifies appropriate developmental language concepts (e.g., colors,


shapes, directions, categories, sequencing, verbs) and vocabulary
pertaining to the provided curriculum and consults with teacher and
support staff on how to implement those concepts and vocabulary into
the provided curriculum.
Consults on material adaptation (consults jointly w/ staff and other
specialists, as warranted to modify presentation of materials that have
been created by the teacher related to the curriculum).
Provides training to classroom staff on specific software applications
and other language-based resources that support the curriculum (e.g.,
ProloQuo2Go, Intellitools, BoardMaker).
Identifies pragmatic (social-based) communicative concepts/strategies
(e.g., joint attention taking turns, following directions, listening skills)
pertaining to the provided curriculum and consults with teacher and
support staff on implementation of those concepts/strategies.
Provides increased individual therapy w/ those students who have a
specific speech-language disorder (articulation, phonology) as
evidenced by a 50 (Communication Disorder) eligibility on their IEP w/
accompanying supportive documentation (i.e., standardized
assessments, written speech language reports).

Augmentative Communication Support in Life Skills


Classrooms

Identifies and facilitates access for participation in curriculum (e.g.,


determines what student needs physically to participate in computer
activities, leisure activities, and other curriculum activities directed by
the teacher).
Identifies programs, trains implementation strategies for
communicative access to the classroom curriculum (e.g., suggesting a
programmable switch such as the Big Mac or programming
communication device w/ specific messages for individual
participation).
Consults on material adaptation (consults jointly w/ staff and other
specialists, as warranted to modify presentation of materials that have
been created by the teacher related to the curriculum).

Provides specific training and assists to support staff on accessing


equipment/communication devices/implementation strategies (trains
staff so they are familiar w/ devices and their features and basic
programming) as it relates to the classroom curriculum.
Provides training to classroom staff on specific software applications
and other language-based resources that support the curriculum (e.g.,
ProloQuo2Go, Intellitools, BoardMaker).

Aug Comm and Speech-Language services will (and should) overlap in


certain areas.
A student qualifies for specially-designed speech-language services
when he/she has a specific speech-language disorder that is not
related to another eligibility (e.g., ID, ASD). Most Life Skills participants
do not qualify for specially-designed speech-language services are
appropriately served under consult for services for speech-language.
