An ammonia system operating with an evaporating temperature of

30C and a condensing temperature of 35C separates flash gas at
a temperature of 2C and delivers it to the condenser through a
separate compressor. If the refrigerating capacity is 200kW, what

A commercial refrigerator operates with R-12 between 1.2368 bar and

13.672 bar. The vapour is dry and saturated at the compressor inlet.
Assuming isentropic compression, determine the theoretical C.O.P of the
plant. The isentropic discharge temperature is 64.86C. If the actual
C.O.P. of the plant is 80 % of the theoretical, calculate the power required
to run the compressor to obtain a refrigerating capacity of 1 TR. If the
liquid is sub-cooled through 10C after condensation, calculate the power
required. The properties of R-12 are given below :

(i)

A single cylinder, single acting reciprocating compressor using R-12

as refrigerant has a bore 80 mm and stroke 60mm. The compressor
runs at 1450 rpm. If the condensing temperature is 40C, find the
mass of refrigerant circulated per minute and the refrigerating
capacity of the compressor when the evaporating or suction
temperatures is (1) 10C and (2) 10C. Assume the simple cycle of
operating and no clearance. Also determine the change in results
when the clearance factor of 8 % is considered and the index of
isentropic compression is 1.12.
