If w e go bac k in time, over a hundred years

ago, the fantasies of science-fiction writers
like Jules Verne were laughed at. Now we
take their predictions a lot more seriously.
Feature films and TV series not only
ent ert ain the public, they also inspire serious
novelists.

2
The exploration of outer space or astronauts
landing on th e moon is already old history.
Spaceships circle the earth and other
missions have gone to Mars. Robots are no
longer a new phenomenon and the arrival of
replicants - genetically engineered humans is almost with us. Whether these
developments represent our best hope of a
br ight future or a terrifying nightmare is a
matter of opinion . What they all have in
common is the fact that they first appeared
on the cinema screen .

10

3
Does all this mean that th e planet will soon
be under threat from an evil empire of
deadly aliens or that robots will want to
destroy their masters? Most scientists think
not. But even if we haven't yet matched the
dreams of some science fiction writers,
progress is fast and we can expe ct to see an
incredible number of exciting new th ings in
th e next 20 years.
4

Remember the transporter machine in Star

Trek? Scientists at Stanford University in
California have succeeded in transporting a
small object to the other side of town. What
they actually made was a three-dimensional
copy, but it is still a great achievement. We
often thin k that time travel, as in the film
Back to the Future, is just a fantasy. However,
this could be a reality in the not too distant
future.

True stories are often the best and the story of Apollo 13 is no
exception. Although the story of the unlucky thirteenth Apollo
mission was made into a successful Hollywood feature film. It
is the tale of a mission that it went horribly wrong after just two
days in the space. The crew had just finished a TV broadcast
when the pilot pressed a button for a routine exercise. There was
a loud explosion and the spacecraft has went out of control. For
the next six hours the crew desperately tried to work out what
had gone wrong. They would had to work fast because they
knew if they ran out of oxygen and for electricity, they were
finished . They also needed water, not even for themselves, but to
cool the spaceship's electronic systems. With the help of the
engineers at NASA, they got over the ship back under control
and were guided it back to earth. When the parachutes finally
brought the module back, nobody could to believe that they had
really done it. It was a tale of incredible imagination and
intelligence - absolutely very perfect for a film.

D Fast forward

On the night of 30 March 1990, both the

Belgian police and NATO picked up a UFO on
their radar screens. Two fighter jets were sent
to investigate. The planes followed the object
on their radar, but it moved away at
incredible speed. After a 75 minute chase, the
UFO disappeared completely.
The event was seen by many people. They all
agreed that they had seen a triangle of
coloured lights on the bottom of a huge space
ship. The Belgian government admitted that it
had no idea what it was. Research teams in
Europe have still found no logical explanation
for what happened, and many people are
sure that it was an alien ship.

had got married just the day before and had flown to
America for their honeymoon. The skii ng con ditions were
perfect, but they decided to stop to admire the view and
take some photos. They took off their skis and had
started taking photos when Angela suddenly notice d
another skier, dressed all in blue, coming down the
mountain towards them. He was completely out of
control.
Angela tried to get out of the way, but could not move
fast without her skis. The next th ing she felt was a rush of
air and a sensation of the blue skier passing right through
her.
Immediately afte rwards, the skier disappeared from view.
Angela found she could not move. She looked around her,
but John was nowhere to be seen. Then, in the distance
through the trees, she saw the blue skie r and called out
to him. He called back and she felt another rush of air
pass through her body. The sky seemed suddenly black,
but behind her a bright blue light lit up the forest. 'Come
with me,' he called again. 'I have waited six moons for
you.'
Angela has never been seen again. And now, 20 years
later, John is still in the mountains of Colorado, waiting
for the return of the blue skier and the only woman he
has ever loved.

Reading
FeE practice: Part 3

Read this magazine article about the problems of global warming. Four paragraphs have been
removed from the text. Choose from the paragraphs A-E the one which best fits each gap 1-4.
There is one extra paragraph which you do not need to use .

Even optimistic people cannot hide from the

fact that the planet is warming up. One of the
signs of this greenhouse effect is an increase
in the number of natural disasters: hurricanes
and tornadoes, snowstorms and extremely
heavy rain, and, everywhere you go, record
temperatures. The cost of such disasters,
both economically and in terms of human
lives, is already enormous.

1
Disagreements of this kind cannot be
avoided. We simply do not understand
enough about our climate to predict
accurately what will happen next. But if
countries cannot agree, we may be foolish
enough to miss the opportunity to do
something about it now. The gods of nature
may not be happy to wait for us to make a
decision.

2
Nowadays, we should all know what this
means. We should all be aware of the
benefits of recycling. Avoid wasting natural

22

resources. If driving isn't totally necessary,

don't take the car. It's the little things that
matter. When you learn that six per cent of
the pollution in Los Angeles is caused by
cigarettes and barbecue smoke, you may
decide to change your habits.

3
There may also be positive side-effects to a
lowering of temperatures. High temperatures
change the way we behave. When the
temperature rises, the FBI expect more
cases of murder and other crimes than in
cooler months. One boiling month in New
York, the number of murders went up 75 per
cent. It appears that the cooler we are, the
calmer we are.

4
Whichever way we look at it, it is clear that
we cannot sit back and do nothing. Even if
the future of our planet is not at risk, it is
important that we all play a part. We may not
understand all of what is taking place, but we
know enough!

FeE practice: Part 2

o Read the article. and for questions 1-6, choose the correct answer A, B, C or D.

eo r sc
About 90 years ago, the American naturalist
and fur trader, Clarence Birdseye, observed
Indians fishing in sub-zero temperatures. He
noticed that the frozen fish were fresh enough
to eat many days later when they were thawed.
It was in this way that a whole new industry
began which many of us would now find hard
to live without. He could never have imagined
that the next stage in the science and industry
he started would be the freezing, not of food,
but of human beings.
At minus 1300 C. life comes to a complete stop
and a living cell can be stored and preserved for
a thousand years. This new science of deep
freezing - or cryogenics, as it is called - is
already turning into big business. People are
queuing up to have their bodies frozen after
death, in the hope that future generations will
have developed the technology to bring them
back to life.
When a person is pronounced dead, the blood
circulation is restarted artificially and the body
is gradually cooled in liquid nitrogen, taking
the temperature down as low as minus 200 0 C.
The Alcor Foundation in Arizona has been
carrying out research for over 20 years and the
techniques they have developed have now
become routine.

28

However, suggestions in some newspaper

articles that cryogenics already provides the
secret of eternal life are misleading. The main
problem with cryogenic preservation is that
when cells are frozen, water turns to ice and
this forms crystals which can damage the cells.
Even if the brain can be preserved, at the
moment it is impossible to keep the body in
good condition.
In spite of these problems, people are prepared
to pay up to $120,000 to be put into cold
storage in Alcor laboratories. New
developments in the science of cloning mean
that it may soon be possible to make identical
copies of cells that have been damaged by ice.
lf this happens, the high cost of cryogenic
storage may seem worth it.
Of course, there has been some debate about
the ethics of cryogenics, but, generally, there is
less anxiety about this than there is about
cloning. It has not provoked the same sort of
reaction as Dolly the sheep and there have
been few suggestions that the process should
be banned. Cryogenics looks like it will remain
a cool science.

The secrets of science

1 How did Clarence Birdseye get the idea to freeze food?
A He watched Indians fishing in cold temperatures.
B He noticed that the fish were fresher in cold water.
C He saw that the fish could still be eaten several days later.
D He knew that we wouldn't be able to live withou t froz en food .
2 Why has cryogenics become so popular?
A Because it is big bu siness.
B Because people can live for a tho usand year s.
C Because futur e gen erations will n eed it.
D Because people wa nt to return to life late r.
3 Wh en are bod ies frozen?
A Just before they die.
B When the Alcor Foundation has done its research .
C When the temperature is minus 2000 C.
D After they die .
4 Why may people need new bod ies?
A Because the newspapers are wrong.
B Beca use the cells are fro zen.
C Because th e brain is no t in good condition .
D Becau se ice crystals destroy the cells.
5 Wh at does this (pa rag raph 5, line 7 ) refer to ?
A The h igh cost of cryogen ic sto rage .
B Progress in clon ing techniqu es.
C Payi ng a lot for cold storage.

A light tan will make you look younger and
healthier, but there is increasing evidence that
sunbathing and using sunbeds are directly linked
to skin cancer. In the long term, it also ages the
skin. If you want a tan, you may do better getting
it out of a bottle.

34

If you want to change the colour of your hair,

why not just do it? A quick visit to the hairdresser
can make you sunnier, more attractive and
improve your self-image a great deal. The
problem is how long it will last When the dark

Doctor McWhale was a famous

zoologist from Canada who specialized ~
in the psychological problems of
animals that were kept in locked cages.
I
Within the circus world he
had become quite famous for solving
the problems that many of these
animals faced. However, despite
McWhale's understanding of animal
behaviour, he had never actually seen
any wild animals in their natural
environment. One day he was invited
to speak at a conference in Kampala.

some time on safari afterwards. It was

By the time the conference finished,

McWhale only had a few days left before
he had to fly back to Montreal. For a while.
he was te mpted to enjoy himself in
Kampala, chatting with colleagues, strolling
ro und the town and enjoying his temporary
fame. 2
With a certain regret he
left the city and set off fo r the game
reserve with a Ugandan he had met at the
conference who happened to be a guide.
After eight hou rs of walking through the
forest, they still hadn't seen any wild
animals. In fact, the only animal they had
seen was an old grey donkey which
followed them and started to bray so
loudly that no other animals would come
near. The guide suggested that he went on
ahead to see what he could find and to see
if he could get rid of the donkey. 3
Two hours later. the guide had st ill not
come back, the sun was beginning to set
and McWhale was beginning to get
worried. 4
Ten minutes later he

had fallen asleep. He wo ke up suddenly

when he heard a deep growl , which seemed
to be coming from very nearby.
He put on his glasses and glanced aro und
him to see what was making the strange
noise. He could see nothing. 5
50 m in front of him. was the biggest gorilla
he had ever seen. Not only that, but the
gorilla was dressed up in a clown 's costume.
When he saw McW hale, the gorilla began
striding towards the bush where he was
hiding. McWhale , frightened out of his skin,
jumped out of the bush and ran for his life.
McWhale later lea rnt that this was the sixth
gorilla to be seen wearing clown clothes.
The authorities have still not found the
strange individual responsible for dressing
the gorillas up in this way. Psychologists are
unable to explain why this individual might
do this. McWhale will never forget the
experience, but is sure of one thing. A polar
bear locked in a cage is very normal
compared to some human beings.

OLYMPIC HEROES
Most people have no problem remembering the last
O lympic Games and many of us look forward to
the next Games with great excitement. But it's easy
to forget the heroes of the last part of th e 20th
century. Who were those sports men and wo me n
who we re the greatest influences on t he athletes of
today?
In the athletics stadium, perhaps the grea st star of
all was Carl Lewis. He became an immediate
favourite with the fans after winning four gold
medals at Los Angeles in 1984, the year wRen the
Russians did not send a team. This was partly
because the Americans had not sent a team to
Moscow four years earlier. l.ewis's Olympic career
lasted for another I2 years until 1996 when he won
his ninth gold medal in Atlanta. He could have won
a tenth in the 4 x 100 m relay but he wasn't picked
for the team. It is this last medal that Lewis is most
proud of.

100 and 200 m? Her sister; [ackie. followed in her
footsteps by winning t he long jump. But perhaps the
mo significant event that year was when Car l
Lewis's great rival, Ben Johnson, lost his gold medal
for the 100 m after failing a dr ugs test.
The Barcelona Games of I992 were perhaps the
friendhest Games in recent times and this t ime it
was a gymnast,Vitaly Scherbo from Belorus, who
~as in the limelight after winning four golds. At the
next games, th e medals for gymnastics were shared,
with no single competitor do minating. Europeans
will remember Melissanidis taking the gold for
Greece in the floor exerc ises and the Ukrainian, Lilia
Podkopayeva, winning the women's event.

Nowadays, such parks can be found all over

the world: indeed, it is becoming hard to
avoid them. Parks that are successful can
make millions and the creators are
desperately looking for ways to improve
their attractions. Special events, such as
unforgettable firework displays, are
organized in order to bring in the crowds.
Creating a theme park involves huge
amounts of money, and the managers
cannot afford to relax.

For people like myself who find it very easy

to resist the more frightening rides, there
are plenty of other ways to pass the time.
At the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas, there is a
glass copy of the tomb of Tutankhamun. Or
rather, the hotel is inside the tomb! There
are shops and restaurants and imitation
temples, but best of all there is the
possibility of a boat trip down the Nile.
How's that for a way of getting rid of the
memory of that awful roller coaster?

A trip to a fun park is not complete without

something to really scare you. A 360 0 roller
coaster is nothing special these days. For
real thrills, try the Euro-Mir in Germany
which is a roller coaster that looks like a
space station. Or there's Oblivion, at Alton

headfirst into a dark hole filled with smoke.

For centuries, Christopher Columbus has

monaged to copture the public imaginotion ond
is remembered in history as the man who
discovered America. Despite the foct that this is
clearly not true, it has become impossible to turn
this 'history' on its head. Columbus had actuolly
set off in search of India and it is clear from his
diary that this is what he thought he had found.
Moreover, people had been living in America. the
lond he 'discovered', for many thousands of years
before he arrived. It is difficult to know why his
reputation has survived so long.

Conditions in the new homeland were harder

than they had expected. The journey from Iceland
to the new colony was disastrous and at least ten
ships sank during the voyage. Once they had
arrived, they built farms. They made warm clothes
out of animal skins and fur but there was not
enough wood for building or burning. They had to
trade things with the people from Iceland but
there was no certainty that the trading ships
would ever arrive. They found their attempts to
survive becoming increasingly desperate.

They continued their journey and, in the end,
reached gentler, greener lands where they spent
the winter. Now that Leif had found a route to a
land which promised an easier life , other Vikings
set off from Iceland to join the new colonies. His

However, the peace did not last long. Some of

the Vikings were Christians and others were not,
and there was fighting between them. During the
first winter, there was a terrible lack of food and
the colonists had to live under the threat of
attacks from the Indians. War soon broke out.
4
It is in this light that we should judge the
achievements of Columbus. In many ways he was
certainly a hero, but the fact remains that he is
famous for something that was achieved by
someone 500 years before.

From Columbus to Concorde

A Eirik's son, Leif, was determined to find
anather solutian. Now with 35 men. he
sailed west, further than any European had
ever travelled before. However. they found
they had exchanged the hard life on
Greenland far something even worse. The
coast of Labrador where they had landed
was a freezing land of cold winds and icy
mountains.
B The Indians kept the Vikings trapped in
their calonies, unable to develop a strategy
for survival. After three winters. the new
Viking nation could no longer support itself.
The Vikings decided to go back to
Greenland, never to return to the New
World.

The Viking nation was divided into three

groups: chiefs, free men and slaves. Towards
the end of the Viking period, the
introductian of Christianity had a positive
influence on Viking culture, and increasing
numbers of slaves were given their freedom.

E The new settlers soon found that the land

was inhabited. They found the Indians

primitive. but, unlike 500 years later. the
settlers did not try to impose their religion
on the new civilization they had discovered.
They began trading, receiving coloured cloth
in return for the furs they brought from the
north.

C Columbus wasn 't even the first European to

reach America. That had already happened

500 years before. In 982, Eirik the Red, chief
of the Viking tribes on the island of Iceland,
set sail and with the many people who
went with him. set up a colony on the coast
of Greenland.

When a logo becomes an essential item of

Whether it
is through advertising or sponsorship of
fashionable sports, a company's image is
always represented by its logo. One that
becomes so popular that people will steal it
will increase the sales of the product it
represents.
We see the black horse of Ferrari or the
golden arches of Macdonalds and we
recognize them immediately. 3
Rather than telling us in advertisements how
good their products are, companies often
prefer to pay for their logo to be displayed

on a Formula One car or on the stage of a

pop concert. The media knows that people
will link the logo with the car or the concert,
and be influenced by this.
In this highly competitive world , advertisers
will do anything to make their logos more
well-known than those of rival brands. A
technology is now being developed to put

anything at all. You know thattheir
teachers have shown them lots of

but they have such a negative

'A lot of people often forget that the
oral exam is designed to test
communicative ability. Candidates
come in andthey don't hear
anything you say. When they do
finally begin to talk, you can hear
that they aresaying things they have

Stealing money from old people who are

unable to defend themselves has always
been a particularly unpleasant crime. But
one case that got a lot of publicity in the
press recently was about an amateur thief
called Peter Raymond. He was going for a
walk when he saw an old lady getting out of
her car. He walked over to her, pulled out a
knife and demanded money. The woman,
Betty Hooper, 74, got out her gun, locked
the thief in the back of her car and drove to
the police station.
2

A group of thieves in Colombia were

involved in a very curious robbery two
years ago . In the middle of the night, they
broke into a shoe shop and stole 756 shoes.
So far, so good, but if the thieves had
looked more closely at the shoes, they
would have realized that they were all for
the right foot. The left shoes had been
locked in another room as a security
measure.
