D400 FPGA Firmware and BIOS Update

Technical Note

This document describes the procedure required to update the FPGA firmware and BIOS settings required for R3.20 and onwards.

Prerequisites:
The following items are required for the FPGA firmware update:
D400 with KVM card
1GHz main module: 520-0205,
Substation chassis: 500-0340,
Power supply: 520-0217.
KVM card: 520-0206.

Computer monitor.

USB keyboard.

Stand-Alone Quartus II Programmer software (Altera 11.1sp1 Build 216).

Terasic USB BLASTER CABLE ().

FPGA firmware 0500AR2v02_CS_0146FCFC.pof

BIOS Setting Update Procedure


1.

Connect the USB keyboard and computer monitor to the D400.

2.

Power ON the D400.

3.

Press the Delete key during start up to enter BIOS.


Result: The BIOS menu appears.

4.

Select Power Management Setup menu option.

5.

Set the ACPI Function parameter to Disable,

6.

Press the ESC key.


Result: The main menu appears.

7.

Select the PNP/PCI Configurations menu option.

8.

Set the Resources Controlled By parameter to Manual,

9.

Select the IRQ Resources menu option.

10. Set the IRQ9 assigned to parameter to Legacy ISA,


11. Press the F10 key to exit,
Result: The SAVE to CMOS and EXIT appears.
12. Press the (Y) key and the Enter key to exit the BIOS setup.

FPGA Firmware Update Procedure


1.

Install the Quartus II Programmer software on your computer.

2.

Power OFF the D400.

3.

Remove the main module.

4.

Connect the USB cable to a USB port on the computer and to the USB Blaster.

5.

If Windows is not able to install the USB Blaster device driver:


a.

Manually install the device driver by going to System Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> USBBLASTER -> General -> Update Driver -> Browse computer -> location of Quartus II Programmer software. (e.g.,
C:\altera\11.1sp1\qprogrammer\drivers).
Result: The Hardware Installation warning appears.

b.

Click Continue Anyway.

if the USB Blaster device driver is successfully installed go to step 6.


6.

Connect the USB Blaster 10-pin header to the D400 main module assembly and reinstall the main module into the D400
chassis.

Note the header location and orientation,

b.

Ensure that the 10-pin header is fully inserted.

Ensure that the 10-pin harness is not pinched during main module installation.

7.

Power ON the D400.

8.

Launch the Quartus II 11.1sp1 Programmer on the computer.

9.

Click Hardware Setup

10. Double click USB-Blaster. The currently selected hardware: will change from No Hardware to USB-Blaster [USB-0].

11. Click Close.


12. From the Mode: pull down menu select Active Serial Programming.

13. Click Add File and navigate to 0500AR2v02_CS_0146FCFC.pof.

14. Confirm that the:

Checksum value matches that of file (suffix of file name),

Device is EPCS1.

Program/Configure, Verify, and Blank-Check checkboxes are selected.

15. Click Start, and wait for Progress: to display 100%.

16. The FPGA firmware update is complete.


17. Power OFF the D400.
18. Remove the main module from the D400.
19. Remove the USB Blaster 10-pin header.
20. Reinstall the main module into the D400 chassis.
