Battery collection
The council is to start trialling kerbside collections of
household batteries in the East Riding.
The trial areas will be announced in the March issue
of East Riding News. If successful, the service will be
rolled out across households in the East Riding.
The service is part of the council’s commitment
to helping residents reduce household waste and to
recycle and compost at least 45 per cent of what they
create.
Batteries contain chemicals such as lead, mercury
or cadmium which, when sent to landfill, can leak
and have to be contained and managed safely by the
landfill operator.
Recycling recovers some of the materials used in
the manufacture, such as nickel, cobalt and silver.
