SPECIFICATION DATA
Eagle Quantum
Fire and Gas
Detection/Releasing System

APPLICATION
Eagle Quantum combines a flame detection/extinguishing agent release system with a hazardous gas
monitoring system, integrated on a fault tolerant digital communication network. The system continuously
monitors analog process signals such as combustible
or toxic gas concentrations as well as flame detectors
and discrete contact closure type devices such as
manual fire alarm call boxes and heat detectors. The
sensor outputs are communicated to the control unit
for executing the fire suppression logic, controlling
the extinguishing agent release, signaling and annunciating output actuation, and communicating with an
external operator interface station for system configuration, monitoring, and event logging purposes.

(silence, acknowledge, reset, isolate), annunciation relays, and a
local information display. The LON/SLC starts and
ends its loop at the LCU and two serial communication ports allow configuration and system monitoring.
An isolation module provides ground fault monitoring
for LON/SLC and serial port wiring.
The LCU consists of a three position rack that houses
the Communication Gateway, Logic Controller, and
Isolation Module. These three modules plug into the
LCU backplane.
The Communication Gateway is used
in conjunction with Det-Tronics software
to configure the system as well as to
provide information on an ongoing basis
to external systems such as PLCs and

FIRE
SUPPRESSION
D1889

The LIOU is part of the fire detection portion of the Eagle Quantum
system and performs functions
such as fire suppression agent
release and notification. The
LIOU consists of a card rack containing up to six output modules, mounted in a NEMA 4 enclosure.

through two serial ports using Modbus RTU and/or

Allen Bradley DF1 protocols. It also provides local
display and four programmable relay outputs. In
addition, the gateway provides a heartbeat signal that
is used to test for LON/SLC integrity, to provide time
and date information to field devices, and to monitor
for the continued presence of all configured field
devices.

The LIOU is controlled and supervised by the LCU

using an RS-485 serial communication link. Up to
four LIOUs can be controlled by the LCU, allowing up
to 24 output modules in the system.

The Logic Controller provides the

control function for the fire detection
portion of the system. It continuously
monitors messages from the field
devices on the loop and performs the
logic functions needed to generate the
appropriate output(s).

Available LIOU modules include a Relay Module, a

Release Module, and a Signal Audible Module. A
maximum of 8 modules of any one type can be
installed in the system.
The Relay Module provides four
unsupervised relay outputs. The
relays are independently programmable and can be used for
control of auxiliary functions such
as fan shutdown and damper control. Each relay has
SPDT contacts, rated 2 amperes at 24 vdc or 1
ampere at 120 vac.

The logic controller receives configuration information

from the gateway through its serial connection to the
Operator Interface Station (OIS). It also communicates with the output modules located in the Local
Output Unit or on the LON/SLC, controlling system
functions such as alarm signaling, agent release and
relay actuation.

The Release Module provides signaling and agent release capability. Its supervised outputs include
one programmable release circuit

and three Style Y signaling circuits. The release circuit is compatible with a variety of solenoid or initiator
based suppression systems.

The EQ2100PSM Power Supply

Monitor and EQ2200IDCGF
Initiating Device Circuit Ground
Fault module monitor the system
power supply and immediately report any detected
power related trouble to the LCU.

The Signal Audible Module provides four indicating circuits for

controlling UL Listed 24 vdc polarized audible/visual indicating
appliances. Each output circuit
delivers up to 2 amperes at 24 vdc and is independently programmable to allow annunciation of separate events.

The EQ2200UV UV Flame

Detector is a unitized UV flame
detector, equipped with both
automatic and manual optical
integrity (oi) test capability. When
a fire is detected, a fire alarm
message is immediately sent to the Logic Controller.
Detector status is indicated by red LEDs that are visible through the detectors viewing window.

Intelligent Field Devices on the LON/SLC

The LON/SLC is a fault tolerant, two wire, digital communication network, arranged in a loop that starts and
ends at the Local Control Unit. In its base configuration, the LON/SLC supports up to 60 intelligent field
devices spread over a distance of up to 2000 meters
(up to 244 field devices and 10,000 meters of wiring
using network extenders). Devices on the network
can consist of a combination of Flame Detectors,
Initiating Device Circuits (IDCs), Digital
Communication Units (DCUs), Agent Release
Modules and Signal Audible Modules.

The detector is equipped with a special arc rejection

feature that enables it to prevent nuisance fire alarms
caused by UV from short-duration electrical arcs or
electrostatic discharge, while maintaining the ability to
reliably detect the UV given off by a flame. Typical
applications that benefit from arc rejection logic
include electrostatic coating processes and uncontrolled environments where transient UV sources can
be present, such as many typical outdoor applications.

Alarm/Calibration Log
Each network device maintains an alarm log in nonvolatile memory, recording the time and date for the
last 8 alarms. In addition, the DCU keeps a calibration log that can be used by the operator to evaluate
the remaining life of the sensor. This log includes the
zero, span, date and time for each successful calibration.

To enhance detector versatility, different levels of arc

rejection, as well as sensitivity and time delay are field
selectable.
The EQ2200UVHT High Temperature UV Flame Detector is rated
for continuous duty high temperature applications, such as turbine
compartments, enclosures, generator rooms, etc. where ambient
temperatures can continuously exceed +75C
(+167F), up to 125C (+257F).

Fault Tolerant Network

The Eagle Quantum system utilizes a unique patented
technique for detecting problems in the network
wiring. This feature minimizes the possibility of a communication breakdown in the event of a wiring fault
and can also serve as an aid in troubleshooting.

It consists of an electronic module that is used with a

high temperature rated UV detector. The two devices
are mounted in separate enclosures and can be separated up to 165 feet (50 meters) using high temperature rated shielded cable.

Each device on the LON/SLC contains both the hardware and software necessary to isolate and re-route
communication in the event of a network wiring fault.
When a problem occurs somewhere within the network wiring, the gateway annunciates the fault, while
the fault isolation circuitry in the affected nodes isolates the section of the network where the fault has
occurred. Communication is thereby ensured and will
continue over the network. See Figure 2.

The EQ2200UVIR Flame Detector

provides reliable fire protection in
applications where the use of
either UV or IR detectors alone can
result in false alarms. The device
combines both a UV and an IR
sensor in a single detector and requires simultaneous
response of both sensors to generate a fire alarm.
This enables it to respond to a real fire while ignoring
potential false alarm sources such as arc welding, xrays, or hot vibrating objects.
The microprocessor based detector is equipped with
advanced fault detection and diagnostic capabilities.
A pair of red LEDs that are visible through the viewing
window of the UV sensor provide a visual indication of
detector status.
The detector offers software selectable options such
as variable sensitivity and time delay, standard or arc
rejection mode, automatic or manual oi, and latching
fire output.
The EQ2200IDC Initiating Device
Circuit (IDC) accepts two dry contact
inputs for use with devices such as
relays, pushbuttons, key switches, etc.
The IDC supports ANSI/NFPA 72 Class
B Style B supervised input circuits.
When an input is activated, an alarm
message is immediately sent to the Logic Controller.
The EQ2200DCU Digital Communication Unit (DCU) digitizes a 4 to 20
ma analog signal and transmits the
value as a process variable to the
LCU.
The DCU is approved for use with a
variety of Det-Tronics sensors including catalytic
combustible gas sensors, the PointWatch IR gas
detector, and the hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) electrochemical sensor. It will also accept any sensor with a
linear 4 to 20 ma output signal and allows for one person non-intrusive calibration.

which are energized together. It is compatible with a
variety of solenoid or initiator based suppression systems.
The release circuit is supervised for open circuit conditions. If an open circuit occurs, a trouble condition
will be indicated.
The EQ2500SAM Signal Audible
Module (SAM) provides two indicating
circuits for controlling UL Listed 24
vdc polarized audible/visual indicating
appliances. Each output circuit is
independently programmable to allow
annunciation of separate events. The
outputs operate in the reverse polarity fashion when
activated. Each output delivers up to 2 amperes at
24 vdc.
The Signal Audible Module is located on the
LON/SLC and is controlled by programmable logic in
the Logic Controller. Each output circuit is supervised for open and short circuit conditions. If a wiring
fault occurs, a trouble condition will be indicated.
The EQ2400NE Network Extender
allows for expansion of the communication network. The base system
can accommodate up to 60 nodes
and up to 2,000 meters of wiring. By
adding the appropriate number of network extenders,
this can be increased to 244 network devices and up
to 10,000 meters of wiring.
