By New Revert Muslim

Asalaam Alaikum (Peace be upon you)

This is just a quick introduction to ourselves, our names are Aisha and Ruqayah we are both
British born reverts to Islam, we have been Muslims now for around 5 years, we met only a year
ago via the internet, our journey hasn’t been easy at times but We have helped and supported
each other and feel we can do the same for other Reverts to Islam as we understand many of the
difficulties new Muslims face such as family issues, understanding Islam, Islamic dress etc.
We were both brought up as Christians but we got interested in Islam after finding out how
caring and sharing the religion is. The interesting thing about Islam was that it gives an
individual autonomy to choose and is not forced upon people. Throughout, our child hood we
use to think that women are oppressed and have no rights as Muslims, but this was not the case,
infact the women are respected in Islam and have a high status in Islam as the Prophet (pbuh)
states “Jannah (paradise) lies under the feet of the mother”. Since our conversion, we found out
many interesting facts about various things, One example of that is when we started to read about
how Quran describing scientific facts, although it is not a book of science. The teachings and
factual information in Quran made our faith more stronger and we started to ponder and look into
the religion more.
We knew that by converting to Islam, some people may treat us differently or it may have an
impact on our relationship with families, however, as our knowledge about Islam progressed, we
became more interested in following the truth and that truth is Islam. The Quran teaches people
positive values and morals and through this we were able to follow the religion. One interesting
aspect in our lives was that after the conversion, our parents saw a positive change in us and
rather than getting upset, they were supportive, which made it easier for us to learn further about
Islam.
In terms of help from others, we read a lot of information from the books and had limited help
from others in terms of learning Islam, this was a hurdle for us as we needed to learn more.
Nevertheless, we started to develop a detailed insight into the five pillars of Islam and since that
we have been able to learn a lot of information. At present, we are trying to obtain as much help
as we can from the relevant people and we would like many reverts to join this site to share their
experiences as life is a learning experience and we learn from each other. We would also like to
educate non muslims about Islam as it is our duty ordained by Allah.
Allahu Akbar (God is Great)
