MAJOR CONCLUSIONS DRAWN? The central role of control in OCD and specifically the relationships
between need for control and compulsive rituals, which may be conceptualized as means for achieving
an illusory sense of control over stressful life events.
IMPLICATIONS OF STUDY? Our results underscore the importance of control in OCD and demonstrate a
link between illusion of control and repetitive control attempts. The causal relationships between these
factors cannot be determined by the present results. We can speculate, however, that a control cycle
may begin with the dread of uncontrollable life events. Individuals with OCD experience this dread as
unbearable and are strongly driven to attain a sense of control.
OPINION: STRENGTHS OF RESEARCH?
OPINION: LIMITATIONS OF RESEARCH? HOW COULD SAMPLE BE BIASED? Small sample size.
OPINION: VALUE OF RESEARCH? INFORMATIVE? In cognitive-behavior therapy with OCD patients,
identifying the processes involved in achieving an illusory sense of control may decrease the compulsive
efforts by defusing the critical meaning assigned to the substitute activity and simultaneously increasing
self-efficacy and a sense of control over real and relevant life areas.
