Your company has learned that selling instructional videos presents a difficult business dilemma. For its first five
years of operation, the company had a generous return policy in which customers could return any DVD after 10
days, even if it had been opened. However, as return rates began to climb, management began to suspect that some
customers were abusing the policy by watching DVDs long enough to learn whatever they wanted to learn and then
returning them and asking for refunds. The company disliked penalizing the majority of its customer base by
changing the policy, but returns cost money, and the companys profits were taking a bigger and bigger hit every
year. Starting last year, Mr. Shivang garg, who is one the best employees in your department, a smart and hard
worker with a keen mind for business, suggested to accept returns only if the product packaging has not been
opened.
His upbeat attitude has helped the entire organization get through this rough time recently, and on a personal level,
his wise counsel helped your organization grow into a market leader. You generally welcome Mr. Gargs input on
the departments operations, and you have implemented several of his ideas to improve the companys marketing
efforts. However, the proposal he emailed you yesterday was not his best work, to put it mildly. He proposed that
the company dump the advertising agency it has used for a decade and replace it with some new agency youve
never heard of. The only reasons he offered were that the agency had become unresponsive and that a smaller
agency could meet our needs better. He failed to address any of the other criteria that are used to select
advertising agencies, such as costs, creative skills, technical abilities, geographic reach, research capabilities, and
media experience. This is the first youve heard any criticism of the agency, and in fact, their work has helped your
company increase sales every year.
Your task
Q1- Write the conversation between a service agent who assists customers with orders and returns and a customer
who purchased the Kickboxing Fundamentals DVD two weeks ago.
Q2- Draft a detailed email message to Mr. Shivang garg, rejecting his proposal. (Note that the message you are
drafting, you would want to discuss this with Joss in person. in a real-life setting).
