The following movie list is NOT strictly post apocalyptic. Some apocalyptic events are local
or regional and not world wide, some movies/shows have merely a post apocalyptic ‘feel’.
Also included are Animated Movies, Animated Series, TV movies and TV Series. Please
contact me if you see information you know to be in error or that you wish to add.

Genre Notes:
PA – Post Apocalyptic in the strictest sense
PA regional – for a small region, the world has ended as they know it
PA historical – Post Apocalyptic once upon a time, but now society is rebuilding
PA feel – NOT a Post Apocalyptic movie/show, but has that roasted PA smell and feel
PA fanciful – while strictly speaking is PA, it has either strange elements to its story or is
intended as satire or humor and has little to do with traditional PA themes.
PA adult – adult themes and images not suited for the kiddies.
PA ? – I haven’t seen it, and can’t tell from it’s description how to sort this one, so your
guess is as good as mine. Please do let me know for sure.

Deliberate Omissions: These are ‘marginal’ movies I felt just didn’t quite cut the mustard,
either in feel or in more substantive ways, like plot direction. You are more than welcome
to harbor your own standards of ‘acceptable’ material, as I know my decisions are arbitrary

Night of the Living Dead - The story follows a small group of survivors barricaded in a
home for one night. The civil authorities show up the following morning. There is no
general breakdown of society and it only affects a very small regional area.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes – simply put, absolutely nothing PA about this movie,
except it sets the background for the other Planet of the Apes movies and series.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes – Set in contemporary, but alternate timeline, nothing
to do with PA, but it does set some more of the background for the other Planet of the
Apes movies and series.

When Worlds Collide – deals with the apocalyptic events, not the ‘after effects’. There is a
book After Worlds Collide that is the direct sequel and is quite an interesting read.

Resident Evil – One giant underground facility gone bad does not seem ‘apocalyptic’
enough for me. It is more thriller/horror genre than anything else. PA elements too few.

12 Monkeys
Category : Drama/PA
Starring : Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt
Director : Terry Gilliam
Year : 1996

Description
Inspired by Chris Marker's acclaimed short film La Jetée (which is included on the DVD
Short 2: Dreams), 12 Monkeys combines intricate, intelligent storytelling with the uniquely
imaginative vision of director Terry Gilliam. The story opens in the wintry wasteland of the
year 2035, where a virulent plague has forced humans to live in a squalid, oppressively
regimented underground. Bruce Willis plays a societal outcast who is given the opportunity
to erase his criminal record by "volunteering" to time-travel into the past to obtain a pure
sample of the deadly virus that will help future scientists to develop a cure. But in bouncing
from 1918 to the early and mid-1990s, he undergoes an ordeal that forces him to question
his own perceptions of reality. Caught between the dangers of the past and the
devastation of the future, he encounters a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe) who is initially
convinced he's insane, and a wacky mental patient (Brad Pitt in a twitchy Oscar-nominated
role) with links to a radical group that may have unleashed the deadly virus. Equal parts
mystery, tragedy, psychological thriller, and apocalyptic drama, 12 Monkeys ranks as one
of the best science fiction films of the '90s, boosted by Gilliam's visual ingenuity and one of
the finest performances of Willis's career.

Category : Action/PA
Starring : Harrison Muller, Al Cliver
Director : Kevin Mancusco
Year : 1982

now as can be seen in the opening scenes when a gang of outlaws rape and murder
innocent nuns at a mission. They then crucify the priest. Their debauched reveling is
interrupted by roving rangers who engage the villains in a blood-soaked, bone crunching
fight. The rangers manage to save a terrified young woman from the melee, and the heroic

pass. The hero and the girl are married and she is pregnant. Trouble erupts when a
megalomaniacal Neo-Nazi dictator and his cruel minions attack the heavily fortified refinery

A Boy and His Dog

Category : Black Comedy/PA
Starring : Don Johnson, Jason Robards
Director : L.Q. Jones
Year : 1975
Description
Closely adapted from the acclaimed novella by Harlan Ellison, this postapocalyptic black
comedy has emerged as a cult favorite since its release in 1975, when Don Johnson was
a relative unknown and still years away from TV stardom on Miami Vice. Here Johnson
plays a young, libidinous loner named Vic who roams the postnuclear wasteland with his
loyal dog, Blood, a remarkable hound with keen intelligence and the ability to telepathically
communicate with his less-intelligent master. It's survival of the fittest, so food and sex are
Vic's highest priorities, and he gets plenty of both when recruited into a mysterious
underground society in desperate need of young fertile males. While Blood must fend for
himself on the unfriendly surface, Vic realizes that he's an exploited prisoner and must
escape to return to the canine friend he left behind. Thanks in large part to the sly wit of
Blood (whose sarcastic voice is splendidly provided by Tim McIntire), this clever and
disturbing film readily earns its lasting reputation as a low-budget classic, and features a
funny yet chilling supporting role for Jason Robards Jr. The DVD includes a full-length
commentary by director L.Q. Jones, cinematographer John Morrill, and film critic Charles
Champlin.

Andromeda
Category: TV Series/Space Genre/PA historical
Starring: Kevin Sorbo
Director: Jorge Montesi
Year: 2000
Description
The Glorious Commonwealth:
More than 3000 years ago, aliens from a planet called Tarn Vedra in the Andromeda
galaxy invented a way to travel across the stars almost instantaneously. They called it
Slipstream, and they used it to build a vast commonwealth of planets across six galaxies.
When Earth was ready, we were welcomed into it.
It was a vast, diverse group of cultures working together in peace, striving to spread
civilization across the Universe. Unfortunately, some factions came to disagree with the
Commonwealth's methods.
The Fall:
The Nietzscheans - a group of genetically engineered humans who follow a strict
interpretation of Nietzsche - felt that the Commonwealth was weak because it made
treaties with its greatest enemies - the Magog. So they formed a rebellion and attacked the
Commonwealth of which they were a part. The result was a civil war that plunged the
Universe into a new Dark Age.
One of the first casualties of that war was a Glorious Heritage Class starship called the
Andromeda Ascendant. Most of her crew abandoned ship, but her captain - Dylan Hunt -
remained on board as the ship fell dangerously close to a black hole.
The Long Night:
Three hundred years of darkness passed. The Commonwealth was gone. Interstellar
communication became undependable. Slipstream routes fell into disuse. Some still
traveled the stars, but the journey was full of piracy, unmarked dangers and people fighting
for their lives. Technology stopped developing and even reverted in some ways. A few
local governments held together, but most of them were brutal and fascist. The remnants
of the old Commonwealth decayed.
Andromeda Rescued:
A salvage vessel called the Eureka Maru then found the Andromeda Ascendant and pulled
her free. When they boarded the High Guard relic, they found that Dylan Hunt had
survived - the whole ship had been caught in severe time dilatation. From Dylan's
perspective, only a few moments had passed since his crew escaped. But outside the
black hole, darkness had fallen across his beloved Commonwealth.
Time to Rebuild:
Dylan once protected civilization, he now felt an obligation to rebuild what had been lost.
As someone who knew what it was like to live in a Universe that was for the most part safe
and at peace, he felt he and his ship could bring back the Commonwealth. He recruited
the crew of the Eureka Maru, and ever since they have been searching the galaxies for
worlds who are willing to join the New Commonwealth.

Army of Darkness
Category : Action/Comedy, Horror/PA feel
Starring : Bruce Campbell
Director : Sam Raimi
Year : 1993
Description
The third in director Sam Raimi's stylish, comic book-like horror trilogy that began with The
Evil Dead (1982), this tongue-in-cheek sequel offers equal parts sword and sorcery-style
action, gore, and comedy. Bruce Campbell returns as the one-armed Ash, now a
supermarket employee ("Shop Smart. . .Shop S-Mart") who is transported by the powers
of a mysterious book back in time with his Oldsmobile '88 to the 14th century medieval era.
armed only with a shotgun, his high school chemistry textbook and a chainsaw that
mounts where his missing appendage once resided, the square-jawed, brutally competent
Ash quickly establishes himself as a besieged kingdom's best hope against an "army of
darkness" currently plaguing the land. Since the skeleton warriors have been resurrected
with the aid of the Necronomicon (the same tome that can send Ash back to his own time)
he agrees to face the enemy in battle. Ash also finds romance of a sort along the way with
a beautiful damsel in distress, Sheila (Embeth Davidtz) and contends with his own
doppelganger after mangling an important incantation. This movie also has its original
apocalyptic ending.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes

Category : Action/PA
Starring : Roddy McDowall, Claude Akins
Director : J. Lee Thompson
Year : 1973
Description
The fifth and last of the series beginning with Planet of the Apes (to which this is a
"prequel") and the most disappointing. Established in their own Ape City after the near
destruction of mankind in WWIII, the social-democrat chimpanzee people, still led by
Caesar (from Escape from the Planet of the Apes), become involved in a three-way
struggle with a community of radiation-scarred human survivors and the militant gorilla
people. There is a feeling of pointlessness about this simplistic film's attempt to squeeze a
few more dollars from the series.

Beneath the Planet of the Apes
Category : Action/PA
Starring : James Franciscus, Roddy McDowall
Director : Ted Post
Year : 1970
Description:
In this first and best of four sequels to Planet of the Apes another time-warped astronaut
(Franciscus) crashlands on the ape world. Like his predecessor he is captured, befriended
by the sympathetic chimpanzee Zira (Hunter), and meets the girl savage (Harrison). But
when he escapes with her underground and discovers the remains of New York City the
film goes off in a blacker direction: he finds a race of deformed, telepathic mutants who
worship a nuclear Doomsday Bomb, and meets the astronaut hero (Heston) of the
previous film, now half-crazed and venomous, who ultimately detonates the bomb and
bring about a holocaust, wiping out apes, mutants and human alike. In its replacement of
whimsical satire by an altogether harsher judgment about the prospects for intelligent life
on Earth, this film is arguably stronger than its original.

Beowulf

Cherry 2000
Category : Action/PA feel
Starring : Melanie Griffith, David Andrews, Pamela Gidley
Director : Steve De Jarnatt
Year : 1988
Description
At long last, one of the seminal films of the Melanie Griffith oeuvre is now available. Cherry
2000 is the heartwarming tale of Sam Treadwell (David Andrews), who will stop at nothing
to find another model of his broken sex android. Griffith plays E. Johnson, the tough-as-
nails tracker who helps him track her down. As deliriously chowderheaded as the premise
of the movie sounds, it's actually not half bad and immensely fun to watch. The surprisingly
mature plot (nobody gets naked!) involves Treadwell's gradual discovery that there's more
to a good woman than a beautiful body and perfect subservience. Don't worry, there are
plenty of explosions to keep you from getting bored. Griffith absolutely owns the movie--
she looks like a complete badass handling surface-to-air missiles, though of course she
still sounds like she picked up diction tips from early Shirley Temple movies. The DVD
version includes the invaluable documentary "The Making of Cherry 2000" and the option
of watching the entire film dubbed into French.

Cyborg
Category : Action/PA
Starring : Jean-Claude Van Damme, Deborah Richter
Director : Albert Pyun
Year : 1989
Description
Jean-Claude Van Damme, a.k.a. "the Muscles from Brussels," had only a few movies to
his credit when he played the hero in this lame post apocalyptic action flick from 1989. It's
really just another martial-arts movie, dressed down with near-future trash and dirty sets
that have "low budget" written all over them. Van Damme plays the protective escort for a
half-human, half-cyborg woman whose programming contains a possible cure for a plague
that's threatening to wipe out the entire population of Earth. But the woman is kidnapped
by Van Damme's evil nemesis (is there any other kind?) while they are en route to her
Atlanta headquarters. That leads Van Damme right into a lion's den of sadomasochistic
torture and torment. If you've made it this far (and if you have, why?), you're probably a
founding member of the Jean-Claude Van Damme fan club. To everyone else: Don't say
you weren't warned--this is the kind of movie in which naming characters after electric
guitars (Van Damme's character is named "Gibson Rickenbacker") qualifies as clever
screenwriting.

for his only diversion he watches and listens to the Lady in the Radiator sing about finding
happiness in heaven. Henry has a girlfriend, Mary X, who has frequent spastic fits. Mary

sorts of sexual imagery into the depressive and chaotic mix.
Escape from New York
Category : Action/PA feel
Starring : Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef
Director : John Carpenter
Year : 1981
Description
Another John Carpenter cult classic, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK was one of the best
entries in the once popular post-apocalyptic genre which included ROAD WARRIOR and
THE TERMINATOR. In 1997, the island of Manhattan has been turned into the world's
largest maximum security prison, a place where the worst of humanity is sent to rot. The
U.S. Government finds itself in a major crisis when the president's plane crash lands in
New York only days before a vital peace summit between major warring nations is to take
place. The president survives the crash, but is taken hostage by the denizens of
Manhattan and held for ransom. Only war hero turned felon Snake Plissken can save the
day, and he is offered a simple deal for his work: save the president and live, fail to save
him and die. The one-eyed bandit sets to work, cutting a path of destruction to the
president that has to be seen to be believed. Kurt Russell creates the indelible character of
Snake Plissken as no other actor could have. Wisecracking and cool under the very worst
of pressures, Snake is the ultimate bad good guy. Often copied, but never duplicated,
ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK is full of the wit, energy and action that marks a John
Carpenter picture.

Escape from L.A.

Category : Action/PA feel
Starring : Kurt Russell, Steve Buscemi
Director : John Carpenter
Year : 1996
Description
When John Carpenter and Kurt Russell teamed up for this sequel to ESCAPE FROM
NEW YORK, the idea was to kick butt and have fun. They do just that in ESCAPE FROM
L.A., an explosive film that recalls the classic original in all the best ways. Infamous
adventurer Snake Plissken gets another raw deal when he is forced to rescue the
President's daughter from the new prison island of Los Angeles. Mayhem ensues as
Snake goes about his mission, leaving a wake of destruction behind him. Lighter and more
tounge in cheek than the original, ESCAPE FROM L.A. provides loud, violent fun for both
the fans of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK as well as newcomers to the films. There are
great cameos provided by Peter Fonda, Bruce Campbell, Pam Grier and many more that
give the film an extra layer of entertainment. Great special effects are a given in Carpenter
films, and this one is no exception. ESCAPE FROM L.A. is fun fare from a master
filmmaker.

Ever Since The World Ended

Category : Docufiction/PA
Starring : James Curry, Linda Noveroske
Director : Calum Grant, Joshua Atesh Litle
Year : 2001
Description
"Ever Since The World Ended" is a character-driven "social science fiction" film about life
after the end of the world. Twelve years after a devastating plague emptied the world of
people, two San Francisco filmmakers traverse the nearly deserted City with a camera and
a microphone. On a journey that will carry them far beyond the city limits and into the
wilderness beyond, they begin to uncover the secrets of their new world. In a series of
encounters and interviews with a handful of fellow survivors, they explore the harsh
realities of life after civilization, revealing the day-to-day struggles for survival, the shifting
moral imperatives, and the deep ideological rifts in a fledgling community trying to chart a
way forward. At once epic and intensely personal, the film explores the strange and often
humorous ways that people cope with devastating loss, the impatience of the younger
generation with their elders' apparently baffling customs, and the new sexual politics that
results from a catastrophic loss of population. Through the words of a ragtag collection of
survivors, "Ever Since The World Ended" is a sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic look
at society, humankind's hopes for the future, the legacy of history, and the tough choices
facing everyday people struggling to build a community on a large and lonely planet.

Director : Richard Stanley
Year : 1990
Description
Music video director Richard Stanley made his feature debut with this apocalyptic, post-
industrial nightmare set in the distant future. Dylan McDermott stars as Moses "Hard Mo"'
Baxter, a washed-up ex-soldier who spends most of his time in "The Zone" -- a scorched,
ochre-colored desert littered with the radioactive debris of an unspecified war (or wars).
Mo's recent Zone foray with war-buddy Shades (Jon Lynch) turns up an interesting find --
a pile of droid parts he purchases from a spooky "Zone Tripper" (Carl McCoy, frontman for
goth-rock's Fields of the Nephilim), which he carts home to his reclusive artist girlfriend Jill
(Stacy Travis) to serve as raw material for her latest work. Unbeknownst to them, the
dismantled robot is the prototype of a controversial new battle-droid dubbed the Mark 13,
which is designed to reassemble itself from available materials if damaged in combat. In
short order, the Mark 13 proceeds to do just that, tapping into the power grid in Jill's
fortress-like apartment and targeting her for death.

Category : Thriller/PA
Starring : Vincent Price
Director : Sidney Salkow
Year : 1964
Description
Based on Richard Matheson's SF thriller I AM LEGEND, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH is
about a man who survives a global plague only to be stalked nightly by zombie like victims
who call out his name. Vincent Price stars as Robert Morgan, a scientist who tried
desperately to come up with a cure for an airborne virus that was killing people around the
globe. Although he could not develop a serum in time to save his family, he himself seems
to be immune from the disease. Thus, he is left to wander the streets by day, staking
zombies, then barricading himself in his house each night as the zombies try to break in
and kill him. Price is excellent in the role, going about his horrible business as if it were just
another day: waking up and eating breakfast, putting on a suit, calmly staking the zombies,
making dinner, listening to records at night. But when he suddenly sees what looks like
another living soul out in the daylight, his world is suddenly turned inside out.

Logan's Run
Category : Thriller/PA
Starring : Michael York, Jenny Agutter
Director : Michael Anderson
Year : 1976
Description
If you can stifle the urge to laugh at its pastel unisex costumes and futuristic shopping-mall
décor, this extravagant science fiction film from 1976 is still visually fascinating and
provocatively entertaining. Set in the year 2274, when ecological disaster has driven
civilization to the protection of domed cities, the story revolves around a society that holds
a ceremonial death ritual for all citizens who reach the age of 30. In a diseaseless city
where free sex is encouraged and old age is virtually unknown, Logan (Michael York) is a
"sandman," one who enforces this radical method of population control (but he's about to
turn 30 and he doesn't want to die). Escaping from the domed city via a network of
underground passages, Logan is joined by another "runner" named Jessica (Jenny
Agutter), while his former sandman partner (Richard Jordan) is determined to terminate
Logan's rebellion. Using a variety of splendid matte paintings and miniatures, Logan's Run
earned a special Oscar for visual effects (images of a long-abandoned Washington, D.C.,
are particularly impressive), and in addition to fine performances by Jordan and Peter
Ustinov, the film features '70s poster babe Farrah Fawcett in a cheesy supporting role.
Jerry Goldsmith's semi-electronic score is still one of the prolific composer's best, and
Logan's Run remains an interesting example of '70s sci-fi that preceded Star Wars by less
than a year.

Mad Max
Category : Action/PA
Starring : Mel Gibson, Joanne Samuel, Tim Burns
Director : George Miller
Year : 1980
Description
The Road Warrior is already a classic, sans condescending genre distinctions like "sci-fi"
or "action." But the story of Mel Gibson's stately antihero begins in Mad Max, George
Miller's low-budget debut in which Max is a "Bronze" (cop) in an unspecified post
apocalyptic future with a buddy-partner and family. But unlike most films set in the
devastated future, Mad Max is especially notable because it is poised between our
industrialized world and total regression to medieval conditions. The scale tips towards
disintegration when the Glory Riders burn into town on their bikes like an over-amped
cadre of Brando's Wild Ones. Representing the active chaos that will eventually
overwhelm the dying vestiges of civil society, they take everything dear to Max, who will
exact due revenge. His flight into the same wilds that created the villains artfully sets up
the morally ambiguous character of the subsequent films.

Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior

Category : Action/PA
Starring : Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence
Director : George Miller
Year : 1982
Description
A strong candidate for the designation of most thrilling action movie ever made (the turbo-
charged exhilaration of its full-throttle highway chases has never been equaled), the
second part of George Miller's post-apocalyptic trilogy is also a magnificently imagined
movie myth. Like the Star Wars trilogy (by that other George) the Mad Max films draw their
inspiration from the works of mythologist Joseph Campbell. In the 1979 original, Max (Mel
Gibson) is a policeman, the last guardian of civilization and order in a devastated world
reduced to chaos. But when a leather-clad gang of sadomasochistic speed demons mows
down Max's family, his remaining connections to humanity are also permanently severed.
After brutally exacting his revenge, Max wanders off into the wasteland alone, "a burned
out shell of a man" who (to paraphrase The Searchers) is destined to wander forever
between the winds. In The Road Warrior, Max rediscovers a sliver of his shattered
humanity, and a spark of redemption, when he helps an embattled colony of pioneers fight
off the savages who are after that most precious of all commodities: "guzzline." Max is
transformed into a legendary hero, just as Mel Gibson was catapulted to international
movie stardom. With its final stirring images, The Road Warrior transcends its genre
(whatever that may be--science fiction? Western? action adventure?) and becomes
something timeless. It's a great movie.

Mad Max 3 Beyond Thunderdome

Category : Action/PA
Starring : Mel Gibson, Tina Turner
Director : George Miller
Year : 1985
Description
Although Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, the third part of George Miller's post-
apocalyptic Mad Max trilogy, is certainly the least of the bunch (Mad Max 2: The Road
Warrior is the undisputed masterpiece, and maybe the best action movie ever made), it
has still got a good share of imaginative industrial-wasteland-pastiche imagery. And
casting Tina Turner as Aunty Entity, the queen of Bartertown, was a masterstroke. Mel
Gibson's character Max is pitted in a battle to the death against the bizarre Master Blaster
in the Thunderdome, flying around on rubbery straps inside a sort of gigantic overturned
colander with bloodthirsty spectators clinging to the outside. Miller's producing partner,
Byron Kennedy, was killed in a helicopter crash while scouting locations for this film. Miller
was devastated, only agreeing to direct the action sequences--and, somehow, you feel his
heart wasn't entirely in it.

Matrix, The : I, II, III

Category : Action/PA
Starring : Keanu Reeves,Laurence Fishburne,Carrie-Anne Moss
Director : Andy Wachowski, Larry Wachowski
Year : 1999
Description
What if virtual reality wasn't just for fun, but was being used to imprison you? That's the
dilemma that faces mild-mannered computer jockey Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) in
The Matrix. It's the year 1999, and Anderson works in a cubicle, manning a computer and
doing a little hacking on the side. It's while engaged in the latter activity that Thomas
makes the acquaintance of Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who has some interesting
news for Mr. Anderson -- none of what's going on around him is real. The year is actually
closer to 2199, and it seems Thomas, like most people, is a victim of The Matrix, a
massive artificial intelligence system that has tapped into people's minds and created the
illusion of a real world, while using their brains and bodies for energy, tossing them away
like spent batteries when they're through. Morpheus, however, is convinced Thomas is
"Neo," the "one" who can crack open The Matrix and bring his people to both physical and
psychological freedom.

The New Women is a post-apocalyptic adventure about Lisa LaStrada (Mary Woronov)

is having an affair with her nemesis, Virginia Van Upp (Roma Maffia). A recovering
alcoholic, Lisa falls off the wagon and tries in vain to drown her sorrows in booze, drugs
and RV fantasies until one day, at a local barbeque, along comes a huge rainstorm that
quite literally puts everyone in the entire world to sleep. In a couple of days, slowly but
surely, all of the women wake up to a world that has come to a complete standstill. Well,
not a complete standstill, their men remain fast asleep in comas, getting erections every
forty-five minutes. There was definitely something in that rain! Now Lisa and her friends
struggle to rebuild their world (and face their issues of low self-esteem) until they realize by
degrees, as their men start dying and food starts to run out, that there's no hope for
survival in isolated Lacuna. So they hit the road following a shaky radio signal to find a
new model of society made by women for women called Elysium. But the brave new world
has way more out there than they bargained for. Will the new-age hippy chicks and angry,
jilted lady bikers they cross on the winding path to Elysium stand in our heroines' way of
true happiness? Or is Elysium, too, just another impossible dream?

Planet of the Apes

Category : Action/PA
Starring : Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter
Director : Franklin J. Schaffner
Year : 1968
Description
Astronauts crashland on a planet where intelligent apes of three species rule over human
savages. One astronaut is killed, one lobotomized, and the survivor (Heston) is put in a
zoo. There follows a long middle sequence whose satire, alternating between sharp and
heavy-handed, suffers from an attempt to have it both ways: sometimes ape society - in its
racism, its snobbery, its casual cruelty - is seen as a reflection of our own excesses; yet
sometimes the humans are seem as crass and insensitive alongside the apes, who
perhaps have made a better fist of things than we ever did. After unsuccessfully trying to
persuade his captors that he is an intelligent being, the astronauts is befriended by two
chimpanzee scientists (McDowall and Hunter) who accept his story; with their help he
escapes. The final sequence has him fleeing to the Forbidden Zone with a female
"savage" and - in a wonderful image (perhaps inspired by Hubert Roger's cover for
Asimov's Science Fiction magazine Feb 1941) - coming across the half-buried Statue of
Liberty projecting from a sandy beach. He realizes that he is still on Earth but in the far
future, having unknowningly passed through a time-warp.

Planet of the Apes (2001)

Category : Action/PA feel
Starring : Mark Wahlberg, Helena Bonham Carter
Director : Tim Burton
Year : 2001
Description
While attempting the space-pod retrieval of a chimpanzee test pilot, Major Leo Davidson
(Mark Wahlberg) enters a magnetic storm that propels him into the distant future, where he
crash-lands on the ape-ruled planet. Among the primitively civilized apes, treatment of
enslaved humans is a divisive issue: senator's daughter Ari (Helena Bonham Carter)
advocates equality while the ruthless General Thade (Tim Roth) promotes extermination.
While Davidson ignites a human rebellion, this conflict is explored with admirable depth
and emotion, and sharp dialogue allows Burton's exceptional cast to bring remarkable
expressiveness to their embattled ape characters, most notably in the comic relief of
orangutan slave trader Limbo (played to perfection by Paul Giamatti). Classic lines from
the original film are cleverly reversed (including an unbilled cameo for Charlton Heston, in
ape regalia as Thade's dying father), and while this tale of interspecies warfare leads to an
ironic conclusion that's not altogether satisfying, it still bears the ripe fruit of a timeless
what-if idea

Roddy McDowall returns from the successful films as the star of this television series
which had a very short life of 14 episodes. All are included in this collection of the
underrated science fiction program. At its best, this series presented thoughtful stories in
which the fugitives bridged the human-ape gap ("The Deception"). Of special interest is the
episode "The Liberators," which was never broadcast during the series' fleeting run.
Notable guest stars include Marc "Beastmaster" Singer ("The Gladiators"), Roscoe Lee
Browne ("Tomorrow's Tide"), Sondra Locke ("The Cure"), and a pre-Bad News Bears
Jackie Earle Haley ("The Legacy").

Reign of Fire
Category : Action/PA
Starring : Christian Bale, Matthew McConaughey
Director : Rob Bowman
Year : 2002
Description
The Road Warrior meets Dragonslayer in the briskly entertaining post-apocalyptic action
thriller Reign of Fire. Reign of Fire exists primarily to give us a bigger and better dragon
than the Vermithrax Pejorative of 1981's classic Dragonslayer, and in that regard, the
special effects are mightily impressive; the reptilian fire-breathers are stupendously
convincing. While the earlier film offers a richer, more whimsical medieval adventure,
Reign of Fire is a fast-moving tale of man versus dragon that takes place in the charred
England of 2020, after Earth has been scorched by rapidly multiplying dragons and the
aftermath of a futile nuclear counterstrike. Mixing high-tech gadgetry with primitive
survivalism, X-Files alumnus Rob Bowman makes the most of his midlevel budget,
establishing a lavish castle base for the rugged, adversarial teaming of Christian Bale and

Director : Donald Jackson
Year : 1994

were placed on the special Frogtown Mutant Reservation. The story begins as the leader

Jones who is injected by the lovely Nurse Cloris. To save Jones from a terrible fate, fellow
rocketeers send out the courageous Ranger Sam Hell to save them.

Sacrifice, The
Category : Drama/PA fanciful
Starring : Erland Josephson, Susan Fleetwood
Director : Andrei Tarkovsky
Year : 1986
Description
Set in Sweden, Andrei Tarkovsky's last film follows the travails of wealthy patriarch
Alexander (Erland Josephson), a former actor and critic who lives in a remote home on the
edge of the Baltic Sea. One year on his birthday, a sudden television announcement
interrupts the celebration with news of a nuclear holocaust. His family and guests suffer
through violent fits of hysteria and emotional turmoil in the ensuing days, but the previously
troubled Alexander finds a clearness of mind when he makes a pact with God--offering
himself as a sacrifice in order to redeem the fallen earth for his cherished son. Supremely
poetic, THE SACRIFICE is filled with achingly beautiful images, expertly shot by Ingmar
Bergman's trusted cinematographer Sven Nykvist. As Alexander goes from self-contented
ease to crippling animal fear and existential anguish and finally to spiritual abandon, the
troubled journey is illustrated with a haunting succession of images, tableaus, objects,
dreams, and gestures--all sewn together in a seamlessly elliptical vision. As in all of
Tarkovsky's haunting and mystical films, the characters are forced to come to terms with
their own physical and spiritual existence, with redemption coming through faith--in this
case, Alexander's faith in his love for his young son.

Terminator, The
Category : Action/PA feel
Starring : Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton
Director : James Cameron
Year : 1984
Description
James Cameron's THE TERMINATOR is one of the tightest, tensest sci-fi films ever made
and a landmark in the genre. In the year 2029, battles rage between the superintelligent
machines that rule the world and the last vestiges of humanity. In late-20th-century Los
Angeles, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) suddenly finds herself stalked by an unstoppable
killing machine--a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) sent from the future to kill her and
her unconceived son, John Connor, the future leader of the human resistance. Sarah can
rely only on Reese (Michael Biehn), a soldier sent from the future to protect her from the
seemingly indestructible Terminator and save humanity. This low-budget masterpiece was
the breakthrough film for director Cameron, who weds special effects, thrills, and
understated romance to create one of the finest action films of the 1980s, which spawned
many imitations but few equals. Science fiction author Harlan Ellison sued over the film's
similarities to his own works, especially the OUTER LIMITS episode "Demon with a Glass
Hand," and won acknowledgement in the film's credits. Schwarzenegger will forever be
known as the relentless Terminator, a heartless killing machine who returns (in a kinder,
gentler form) in 1991's TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY.

shocking gravity that is undiminished by time. Using County Kent as the backdrop, a highly

Wizards
Category : Animation/PA fanciful
Starring : Mark Hamill, Richard Romanus, Bob Holt
Director : Ralph Bakshi
Year : 1977
Description
This uniquely 1970s blend of swords, sorcery, science fiction, kung-fu, fascism, and
nuclear holocaust was director Ralph Bakshi's first venture into fantasy after his grim urban
epics STREETFIGHT and HEAVY TRAFFIC. In a post apocalyptic future that appears as
a blend of World War II Europe and J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, a pint-size wizard
named Avatar (Bob Holt, sounding like Peter Falk) must save the world from a band of
fascist mutants controlled by his evil twin brother, Blackwolf (Steve Gravers), who likes to
confuse enemy armies by projecting films of Adolf Hitler speeches during attacks. Painted
live-action footage of advancing Nazi armies contrasts with Saturday-morning-cartoon-
style animation of fairies and elves as Avatar travels through various magical and
radioactive realms on his quest. Aiding him are a sexually promiscuous fairy queen (Jesse
Wells), a hot-blooded warrior elf (Mark Hamill, fresh from his role in STAR WARS) and
Peace (David Proval), a misunderstood robot rebelling against his Blackwolf-controlled
programming. A bizarre and psychedelic meditation on magic vs. technology, this cult film
still finds an audience on college campuses and will prove quite rewarding to viewers in
the right frame of mind.

the neanderthal Brutals, since in 2293, with most of the Earth's surface off-limits as a
polluted Outlands, industrial society has been abandoned. All worship Zardoz, a huge
flying stone head who makes periodic visits to Earth to pick up grain consignments and
issue bizarre statements involving the male anatomy through the voice of Arthur Frayn
(Niall Buggy). An increasingly skeptical Zed decides to stow away inside the head, which
deposits him in the Vortex, a commune of scientists and intellectuals who are ruled by the
ever-youthful and asexual Eternals. They capture Zed, allowing geneticist May (Sara
Kestleman) to use him as a research subject for a limited period, but he begins to arouse
more than scientific curiosity in the commune's supposedly nonsexual female population.
