Logos
Description: Three varying logos designed for the same

company.
Date: November 2, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 08 / Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator
Objectives: Create three completely different, original
logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to
the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous
designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.
Process: I first began with sketches, ultimately drawing out
about nine varying designs. Using my favorite designs, I began
creating them via Adobe Illustrator. It was initially difficult
to figure out how to use each tool to get the desired effect.
However, I feel as though I was successful in creating these
final designs.

Photodesign
Description: A design created via Photoshop, utilizing a self-

taken image.
Date: October 19, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 08 / Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop
Objectives: Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then
incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on
separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in
Photoshop.
Process: I used only a camera that I borrowed from the campus
library and Photoshop. No other program was used in this
design.

Web Page
Description: A basic web page design intended to display

and explain a logo and company.

Date: November 22, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 08 / Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools: Notepad ++, Adobe Photoshop
Objectives: Acquire a working knowledge of CSS and
HTML.
Process: To create this webpage, I used TextWrangler
for Mac, as well as Notepad++ for PC. I combined what
I did in those programs with a CSS document to format
the webpage. We were given a format that was already put
together, but I altered it so that the design would look the
way I wanted it to. I came up with the content, inserted the
logo that I had previously designed, and changed the colors
of the webpage. In order to draw from colors that were used
in the logo, I opened Photoshop and used the eyedropper
tool to get the correct hex codes.

Event Ad
Description: A flier designed to advertise an event.
Date: October 12, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 08 / Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools: Microsoft Word
Objectives: Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and

inches work together) Find, scan and import a high-quality

image.Create a full-bleed design. Choose a color scheme and
typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Learn
to use only Word design features without using any Adobe
programs, including Photoshop.
Process: I first established the image that I wanted to use
for this ad. The original image that I had wanted to use was
too small to scan, so I had to switch to an entirely different
image. This worked out, however, and I was able to come up
with a design that I was happy with. I inserted the image into
the document first, adding the text boxes and logos later. It
took a little adjusting to reach a design that I was happy with,
as I found complications with the clarity of my body copy
font. However, I finally arrived at a final product that I can be
proud of.

Business Card
Description: Matching business cards and letterhead using

an original logo.
Date: November 10, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 08 / Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
Objectives: Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do
not imitate existing logos or use previous designs. Use the
new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and
letterhead.
Process: I first began with sketching out novel logos to use
for these designs. I had to keep in mind the targeted audience,
as well as stay away from previous designs that I have created.
After creating the logo in Adobe Illustrator, I transferred the
images over to Adobe InDesign where I created the layouts
for both the business cards and the stationery. This was a very
tedious process that took a lot of time to get right.

Stationery

Montage
Description: An inspirational message conveyed via the

blending of multiple images and use of typography.

Date: October 25, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 08 / Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop
Objectives: Unify a layout with a consistent theme and
dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or more
images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more
advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements.
WW
Process: I began with searching for images online, keeping
in mind the message that I chose to convey. After finding and
saving two large-sized images, I opened them up in Adobe
Photoshop and combined them. Via the lasso tool, I was able
to cut and paste the image of the hands onto the background
image of the Salt Lake City Temple. Achieving the right blend
was the most time-consuming, as I found it difficult to decide
how prominent I wanted the image of the hands to be. I chose
to emphasize the words family and forever by using a
different and larger font than I used for the rest of the text. For
effect, I applied the Grain filter to the background image. As a

Flier
Description: A flier intended to advertise a leadership

conference for graduates.

Date: Oct. 5, 2014
Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 08 / Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign

Objectives: Apply the design principles and use appropriate

typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic

flier layout.
Process: I began with four sketches, ultimately going with a
variation of my first sketch. As this was my first time working
with Adobe InDesign, I spent time learning how to do the basics.
I created the outline, placed shapes where I wanted them, and
made sure to leave breathable white space. I applied contrast
within the mirrored shapes, as well as gradient within the
squares. The text, image, and logo were given to me for this flier.

Brochure
Description: A brochure design intended to display and

explain a company, utilizing a novel logo.

Date: December 15, 2015
Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 08 / Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator
Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality
images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in
Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows
the cutout shape of the image.
Process: This project was the most difficult for me, as
it required me to draw on everything I had learned this
semester. I first established what I was designing for, and
settled on a fictional writing organization. I created a logo in
Adobe Illustrator, then set up a tri-fold brochure in InDesign.
I created a grid, made the layout, then inserted the text that
I had previously typed. I printed multiple times until I was
satisfied with the product.
