Brochure

Description: This project allowed me to make a brochure for the city of Portland for potential visitors and
locals.
Programs: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop
Date: December 6th, 2014
Course: Joel Judkins. Visual Media. Section #4
Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process: I started out by making the logo for this project in Illustrator. I wanted to keep it simple. I knew for
the front I wanted to incorporate a bride from Portland. This would be the visual focus. On the inside, I
wanted fun easy pictures that showed what our city is all about. I used the text tool to wrap around certain
images, and chose the fonts that looked best. I made the front middle opaque to be a subtle background.

Foods To Try

available
toppings including fruit loops,
bubble gum, Oreos, and their
best seller- the bacon
maple bar. Dont forget
to pick up a dozen and try the
citys official doughnut,
The Portland Crme!

Places to See

Welcome to Portland

History
This city began in the year 1843 on the Willamette River.
Then, it was known as Oregon Country.
Pettygrove, a major landowner, and Lovejoy, a
lawyer from Boston chose the name Portland based on
Portland, Maine. Portland was a large port in the Pacific
Northwest throughout the 19th Century until direct railroads began to be built. Today, the Portland metropolitan area is home to more than 2,000,000 people.

Pioneer Square

Pioneer Square or the popularly

nicknamed Portlands Living Room holds
events throughout the entire year. Come to
sit on the brick steps to chat, or see the citys
largest Christmas tree with more than 3,000
gleaming lights. Its located in the heart of
downtown on SW 6th Avenue. Come to
shop at the Pioneer Place Mall, or enjoy a
hot chocolate from Starbucks. When youre
here, youre home.

Waterfront Park
The Waterfront Park is 36.6 acres located
right on the side of the Willamette River.
It was opened in 1978 and today remains
an integral part of the city. Come to jog,
walk, bike, play in the fountains,
eat lunch, play basketball,
or enjoy the scenery
of the boats on
the river.

Letterhead
Business Card
Description: This is an example of a letter head and business card for a flower shop called Fiore.
Programs: Illustrator, InDesign
Date: November 8th, 2014
Course: Joel Judkins. Visual Media. Section #4
Objectives: Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, and email on each piece.
Process: I first designed the logo in Illustrator. I knew I wanted to create a flower shape as part of the
logo, so I used the elliptical tool to create an oval. Then I took the pen tool and created a more
petal-like shape. I rotated the petal around a radius and used three petals for the design. I kept
the business cards simple and elegant. I also wanted to incorporate color with the logo so I chose
green and purple. For the letter head, I simply added the logo and text at the top, and aligned
them on the left. I wanted to use the petals throughout the whole paper, so I made them transparent.
I downloaded a font that I thought related to the essence of beautiful flowers.

Logos
Description: I created three logos for a company called Pizza Planet. I wanted to incorporate fun
colors and pizza so that its easy for the audience to understand what the logo is for.
Programs: Illustrator
Date: November 1st, 2014
Course: Joel Judkins. Visual Media. Section #4
Objectives: Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that
will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.Gather opinions from at least ten people
about which logo appeals most to them.
Process: For the first logo, I knew I wanted to utilize the words along with slices of pizza. I found a font
that I liked, and began to place the words together. I used the trace tool to trace a pizza clipart from
google images, and then ungrouped the letters. I removed each letter A and placed in the pizza. I
also used the paint tool and shape tool to create and fill in the rest of the pizza. The second logo
I created was based around a planet. I wanted to showcase that part of the company name, and
filled it in with a green vertical line to give it a unique element. I used the rounded text tool to place
the writing on top, and I made the pizza a rocket ship. My last logo was black and white to stand out
and showcase the name of the company, and I wanted to utilize the planet part again. I made this
logo into the sun using pizzas to rotate around the circle.

Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Process: I used the css document and the html document to code for this webpage. For my logo, I used illustrator
to design it. I downloaded a font that I liked. Then I used the elliptical tool to create the flower. I copied and
rotated the petal around the center then chose colors that flowed well.

Montage
Description: A spiritual poster with an uplifting message about Thanksgiving
Programs: Photoshop
Date: October 25th, 2014
Instructor: Joel Judkins. Visual Media. Section #4
Objectives: Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)
Select good quality images
Process: I opened photoshop and opened up each image I used. I copied the background layer
so I could make it more transparent. I then put on a mask to the family image so that I could blur the
edges and make them blend in with the background. That way, the edges look less hard. I then added the text on an opaque rectangle and made it overlay, so the background would show through
each letter. I wanted the theme to be Thanksgiving and praising God for all that he has given us.

Event Ad

Description: I created an ad for an event featuring The Beatles merchandise. The ad was to promote the sale and
donate the proceeds to The American Red Cross.
Programs: Microsoft Word
Date: October 11th, 2014
Course: Joel Judkins. Visual Media. Section #4
Objectives: Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and
audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.
Process: I created this ad in word processor and began with the image I scanned. The scanned image is the back
of the ad. I created the text boxes for the words and information. I lined them up to create visual flow. I also added
image of buttons to show case the theme of the event. I tried to keep the color schemes similar to the background. I
decided to put the Memorabilia Sale on the side to give it a different element. Also grouped similar items together.

Photo Design

Description: In this project, we were to take different pictures showing photography principles (lead room, rule of thirds,
foreground/background focus, outside/inside light) and edit them in Photoshop. We had to choose one image for the
poster, choose a color scheme, and incorporate color swatches.
Programs: Photoshop
Date: October 18th, 2014
Course: Joel Judkins. Visual Media. Section #4
Objectives: Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Process: After I edited my chosen image in photoshop, I started to think what color scheme I wanted to utilize in this design. I chose an analogous color scheme because it made the color on the leaves pop. I created different rectangles of
these colors (used the eye dropper tool to find the colors directly from the image). I then began to place them in order
to create a visual flow. I chose the words I wanted to have at the bottom, and made sure they were aligned on the right. I
tried to give the image a good balance while I maintained a good use of white space.

Flier

Description: Flier promoting a graduate leadership conference

Programs: InDesign
Date: October 4th, 2014
Course: Joel Judkins. Visual Media. Section #4
Objectives: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.
Process: I first started my design process by making sketches on a piece of paper. Then, I chose the image I wanted to
use and figured out where I wanted the different elements to line up. I chose to make the title with a black box around it
to show contrast, and create a visual focal point. The viewers eyes start at the top, then go downward. I tried to group
like things together to create visual flow and easy to read for the viewer. I left some white space before the logo and the
website at the bottom.

Personal Project
Description: A Halloween costume award certificate
Programs: InDesing, Photoshop
Date: October 20th
Process: I designed this certificate for a Halloween party I was in charge of planning. I found a border to use,
then I found the fonts that I wanted to incorporate. I then placed the different elements in the places I wanted
them. I just wanted a fun and bright certificate that would stand out.
