Montage
Description:

This is an inspirational montage blending three photos together

with added typography.

Date:
October 25, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 01
Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop & Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message.

Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks.
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image.
Apply typography principles.

Process:

I used Photoshop to darken the sky in the picture of the road. I put a mask
over the photo and brushed away the dark edits on the bottom half of the
picture. I brought in a cracked concrete texture and used the overlay edit to
make it blend in with my road picture. I took the original picture of a man
walking and used a filter to take away the blue tint it had. I used the quick select tool to cut him away from the rest of the picture and placed him on top of
the other pictures. I increased his size and decreased his opacity. I used the
brush tool to decrease the opacity of his feet more. I used multiple text boxes for the quote so that I could manipulate the size and placement of each
phrase in the quote. I used the transform tool to make the quote fit on the
road and I decreased the opacity of the words.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator & Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. One should be clipped in Photoshop and
text-wrapped in InDesign.
Write at least 250 words of original copy.

Process:

I first used Adobe Illustrator to make the logo. I used a water color brush to
make the mountains and I used the square tool to make the box and the lines
within the box. I then downloaded a text from online and flipped the A upside
down just to add something unique. I created the rest of the brochure using
Adobe InDesign. I used the pen tool to draw the triangles and then placed the
photos inside them by right clicking and pressing place image. I used
Photoshop to cut out the surfboard on the back and then used a text wrap to
shape the text around the photo. I indented my paragraphs and also adjusted
the line spacing.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate
layers for non-destructive editing.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in
Photoshop.

Process:

I took this picture with a Canon Powershot at Nature Park. I used

photoshop to crop the picture and straighten it out as well. I enhanced
the picture using the level and vibrance tools. Originally the subject in
the picture was wearing a blue shirt and he was sitting on a green bench.
I changed the color of the shirt and bench, using the brush tool, to fit a
complimentary color scheme. I then used the stamp tool in photoshop to
add some extra trees in the back ground. I created the box and quote in
photoshop as well. The box was originally over the subjects arm. I used
the quick select tool to copy his arm and place it above the white box.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adoobe Illustrator, TextWrangler

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

Acquire a working knowledge of HTML.
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.

Process:

I created this webpage using TextWrangler. I created a simple HTML

document on TextWrangler that consisted of a heading, an image, a
paragraph and an unordered list. I then attached a pre-made CSS
document to the HTML. Through the CSS document I changed the
text color and alignment. I added two different font styles. I changed the
background of the webpage and changed the shape of the box that the
text and logo is in. I used Adobe Photoshop to make a picture of water
that I found on the internet look more transparent. Then I added a light
blue box to the center. This made the text on the webpage more legible
once I placed the photo behind the text. I also used photoshop to make
my logo larger.

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign & Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Use the new logo to design a consistent layout for a business card.

Process:

I first created the logo using Adobe Illustrator. I used two different paint
brushes one to make the lines that frame the SR and the other to make the
SR. I then shaped the letters to give them a different thickness. I created the
business card and letter head in Adobe InDesign. I decided to make the
business cards square. I used a picture from the internet as the background
and lowered the opacity to make the logo more visible. On the back side I
color matched a pink from the flowers and then put a watermark of the logo
over the top and added the type. I found a font online that I really liked for
the the text.

Objectives:

Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Use the new logo to design a consistent layout for a letterhead.

Process:

I created this stationery in Adobe InDesign. I used the same font as the
previous business card for the clients name at the top and then drew a
line underneath it using the pen tool. I put a watermark of the logo on the
lower right hand corner of the page. To make the watermark I just
reduced the opacity to 2%

Oasis

Objectives:

Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal

image that will appeal to the audience.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.

Process:

All three logos were made on Adobe Illustrator. For the first one I created a circle
that allowed me to put the text in a half circle to look like a sunset. I then used a
water color brush to make the wave underneath it. For the second one I found
a font that I liked and adjusted the kearning. I used a different watercolor brush
to add the line underneath it. For the last logo created a circle and filled it with a
solid color of blue. Then I put a gradient mesh on it and used the lasso tool to
outline certain parts of the circle and color them different shades of blue. Then I
used the wrinkle tool to mix the colors together. I cleaned up the edges and cut
the circle down to give it a cleaner look and then created a text box and added
Oasis to the middle of the circle.

Adobe Indesign

Objectives:

Apply design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.

Process:

After I sketched a few designs I picked one that I wanted to work with and
began to develop it digitally in Adobe InDesign. I picked the picture of the
four students to put across the top of the flier and chose a more
simple logo for the bottom left corner. I used a thin black line and a
slightly thicker gray line to ad detail to the flier at the bottom of the picture
and then again at the bottom of the page. The title is centered to the left
of the page with the two lines running through it. The text on the right side
of the page is aligned so that it creates an invisible diagonal line separating the body text from the D-T-P.

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word

Objectives:

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.

Create a full-bleed design.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe
programs, including Photoshop.

Process:

I scanned the picture onto the computer and then used the word
cropping tool to crop the picture into a circle. I also used the corrections
button to lighten the photo. I chose three different shades of pink for
contrast and because pink is the color for Breast Cancer Awareness.
I used the Word shape tool to create the circles and then over lapped
them.
