Program/Tools
Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign
Objectives
Find meaningful employment related to my fields of study.
Process
I revised my resume using Microsoft Word. It had been ten years since I last updated it; so it
took considerable time to find and organize all of the relevant information. After my resume
was up to date, I copied the text into InDesign. I used contrasting fonts, alignment, grouping,
and a format consistent with my portfolio.

Program/Tools
Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign
Objectives
Create a new logo to fit a company. Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a
letterhead. Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white
space. Include contact information: name, address, phone, and email.
Process
I created the logo using Adobe Illustrator. I made the sides of the dice using the the ellipse
tool. I inserted each side of the dice into the symbols palette. I made a square using the
rectangle tool. I used the 3D > Extrude and Bevel effect to convert the square into a 3D object.
I added each side to the cube from my list of symbols. I rotated the cube to make side I wanted
to show more visible. I used Expand Appearance to convert the cube back into a 2d object. I
added a radial gradient to give the die more depth and a more polished look. I repeated these
steps for each of the dice.
I embedded and linked my logo into an InDesign document. I placed the logo in the top-left
of the stationery. I added contact information on the top-right using the same font as the dice
letters and horizontally aligned it with the logo. I made my name larger, bold, and the same
red used for the dice. I inserted a large die with only numbers onto the bottom of the page as a
watermark. I decreased the opacity of the watermark so that it doesnt interfere with text.

Business Card

Program/Tools
Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign
Objectives
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Use the new logo to design consistent
layouts for a business card. The business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a
vertical page. Apply typography rules, keeping small copy. Keep designs simple with plenty of
white space. Include contact information: name, address, phone, and email on each piece. Use
periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.
Process
I created two 3.5 x 2 inch rectangles for the frames of each side of the business card. I used the
same logo, fonts, and contact information that I used for the stationery. I reduced the size of
the logo until there was enough negative space. I decided the text looked better left-aligned on
the business card instead of right-aligned as it is on the stationery. I copied the same die used
for the stationery watermark onto the back of the card, reduced the size to allow for negative
space, and this time used no transparency.

Objectives
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together). Find, scan and import a
high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that
work for your message and audience. Learn to use only Word design features without using
any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.
Process
I began this project by drawing several sketches with pencil and paper. I used Photoshop to
get a high quality scan of the cover of Put me in the Zoo by Robert Lopshire. I then created
a digital design using only Word 2013. I created spots, like the ones in the image, and used the
eyedropper tool to match the original colors. I made two of the spots larger, made them red
and orange, and used them to emphasize the title. I left-aligned the body text with the title.
I made the title large and bold and used a different, smaller font for my body copy to create
contrast. I made sure to have plenty of negative space and avoided placing elements too close
together. I created all of the content, with the exception of the scanned image.

Objectives
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow. Unify a layout with a
consistent theme and dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or more images together
gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple
elements. Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image. Apply typography principles.
Select good quality images.
Process
I set the the mountain photo as the background. I created a copy of the background so I could
make non-destructive edits. I re-sized and cropped the image so that it fits in a 8.5 x 11 inch
area. I selected the angel Moroni statue, moved it into the background, and added a mask. I
used a black, soft-edged brush with 100% opacity to remove edges. I used a black, soft-edged
brush with 20-30% opacity to blend the statue into the background. I inserted some text, taken
from Isaiah 2:2. I used a contrasting font for some of the text and added overlay and drop
shadow filters. I changed the color of the smaller text and darkened the background to make it
more legible.

Program/Tools
Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop
Objectives
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original logo and use it in a
brochure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images. One should be
clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the
image. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex.
Process
I created a new logo for this project using Adobe Illustrator. Since nerds often wear glasses
and/or bow-ties and since penguins are such nerdy-looking creatures, I combined these
elements together for my logo.
I created my brochure with Adobe InDesign. I made two pages and divided each page into
three sections, using guides to mark where the fold lines would be. I found a teal colored
texture that matched my color scheme and placed it in the background.
I found images online that represented each service that my company, Nerd Design, is going
to offer. I use a hand print to represent print design with the text wrapping around the hand to
create visual interest. I have an image of a film strip going across the bottom that helps unify
the inside sections by stretching across each of them.

Three logo variations for Nerd Design.

Program/Tools
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will
appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs. Use only the
Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.
Process
The first nerd-symbol I thought of was a pair of glasses which I used to wear before I
transformed myself from Clark Kent into Superman. I used the pen tool to draw the glasses
based on designs I found online. I also used elements from the periodic table as a symbol of
nerdiness. I used the eyedropper tool to extract colors from the color wheel to create all my
colors. I created the smile by making an invisible circle and added text with the Type on a Path
tool. I also used the Type on a Path tool to place the text around the pencil. I used contrasting
fonts and varied the size and color to create more contrast.

Objectives
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target
audience. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. Identify hex colors to match logo, using
Photoshop color picker.
Process
I inserted my Nerd Design logo using the <img> tag and centered it using CSS. I added my
content and then adjusted the padding for each of my elements to make sure I have enough
negative space throughout the web page. I used the eyedropper tool in Adobe PhotoShop to
extract colors from the logo so I could use them elsewhere on the page.
On previous web projects, I used web-safe fonts. However, this time I wanted to use the same
two fonts used in my logo. I was able to achieve this by embedding my fonts and using @fontface in my CSS.
Finally, I validated my HTML code using the http://validator.w3.org/ service and my CSS code
using http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/.

Process
My goal was to use my photography and Photoshop skills in combination with my nerdy
interest in space and science fiction. I began by making several sketches with pencil and paper.
I decided to use the idea of a large, planet-like eye in space. I set my camera to Macro mode
and took a closeup, high resolution photo of my eye. However, I had trouble coming up with
an effective color scheme that worked with my brown eye so I used a blue eye from someone
else. I used Photoshop to crop the eye. I made several other adjustments to the eye, including
an increase to the vibrancy. I created an image of stars in space using an online tutorial. I used
a tetradic color scheme consisting of blue, orange, purple, and yellow. I used the eyedropper
tool to extract a color from the eye and made a blue border. I placed a white rectangle below
the border to add contrast with the black space and to made the text more readable. Lastly, I
created a misty halo effect around the eye, using the Gaussian blur filter.

Objectives
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills
to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project
folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.
Process
I began this project by drawing several sketches with pencil and paper. I then created a digital
design with Adobe InDesign using my favorite sketch. I horizontally and vertically aligned
the elements on the design. I inserted black bars above and below the body copy to strengthen
the alignment of the left and right columns of the page. I broke away from the alignment
with the word, graduate, in the title which protrudes boldly into the negative space. I made
the title large and bold and used a different, smaller font for my body copy to create contrast,
making the title a focal point. I made sure to have plenty of negative space between elements,
with a little less white space between elements that I wanted to group together. I was given the
content for the flier. I selected the photo and logo from a collection that was also given to me.
