BUSINESS CARD
Description:

Business cards using a personally created logo.

Programs used:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Date:

10/07/2014

Course # & Section:

Comm 130 Section 02

Instructor name:
Cory Kerr

Objective:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process:

I first started out by creating a monkeys head in Adobe Illustrator to resemble the name of the company,
Three Monkeys Cafe. I used the same coffee cup from the letterhead project to create unity between
the two. I added in the text and placed three verticle lines that vary in the color scheme on the front of
the business card. I wanted to give the business card a little more than just information and contact, so I
implemented the monkey heads to be used as a way to create more business for the company. With the
color scheme, I chose to keep it simple so it creates the visual of a coffee shop. I then took all the different
design elements that were created in Illustrator and placed them into a InDesign file to bring it al together.

Objective:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process:

I first started out by deciding on the business, Three Monkeys Cafe. From there I create a coffee cup in
Adobe Illustrator to personally create a logo for this company. The stationary, I used the coffee cup logo
and placed it at the top of the page. I wanted it to be simplistic so I added a solid brown line using the
line tool and place the text on the right side of the page. After I had created the logos, I then went in to
Adobe InDesign and placed the coffee cup and title on the left side while leaving all business contact
information right aligned to bring it all together to give it a unified look.

Objective:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page

Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML.
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:

I first started out by creating this webpage using a simple text editor, TextWrangler. I first started out
by putting in all of my content into the HTML file and organized it so that they had the proper tags and
were in the proper order. From there, I opened up the pre-made CSS file and connected it to my HTML
document. From there I was able to make corrections and changes in order to create my webpage. I placed
my image on the left side of my webpage so that I could have my first paragraph aligned on the right side
of it, and the rest of my content underneath that. I used the eyedropper tool in Photoshop to get the hex
color number in order to change the color of the text and background to match my logo color scheme. I
used padding around the logo, the paragraphs, and H1 and H2 so that it would not be too close to the edge
of the webpage and text and give it better alignment. I also changed the size of the fonts and the font itself
to create contrast in the text.

BROCHURE
Description:

Two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Programs used:

Comm 130 Section 02

Instructor name:
Cory Kerr

Objective:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and sub headers.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:

I first started by created a few mock designs to see what kind of fold would work best for my brochure.
I used those measurements and used the program Adobe InDesign to set up the fold. I split up my layout
into three sections with the concept that the first and second section of my brochure would be displayed
on the outside, and then the third outside flap would be folded into my brochure and be the first flap you
see when opened. I used Adobe Illustrator to create my logo. I wanted to keep it simple and to describe the
certain breast cancer organization that I was promoting for in my brochure. To create the ribbon, I used
the pen tool and made it thicker to give the essence of a ribbon. I then used noteworthy font to resemble
this organizations font. I used Adobe Photoshop to clip part of my middle image where it says, Become
a survivor. There was another lady in the image that was out of focus and didnt go with the scheme of
images I wanted in my brochure.

Process:

I first began by creating several sketches of my layout. I then chose one of my sketches and used it as a
guide to create a layout in Adobe InDesign. I emphasized my title to create the focal point of the page. I
left the body copy small and then aligned it with the image to leave white space. I was given the image,
content, and logo for this flier.

LOGOS
Description:

Three logo variations for the company, Three Monkeys Caf.

Programs used:
Adobe Illustrator

Date:

Course # & Section:

Comm 130 Section 02

Instructor name:
Cory Kerr

Objective:

Create three original logos to fit a company or personal image.

Use the basic tools of Illustrator to create logos.

Process:

I first started out by deciding on a company that I wanted to create logos for. I then decided on one of my
favorite caf I often visited when I lived in Australia, Three Monkeys Caf. Next I sketched different ideas
I had for potential logos. After finally deciding which logos I would sketch, I used Adobe Illustrator to
help bring these logos to life. I started out by using the ellipse tool to create different shapes of the monkey
heads and the monkey body. Then I used the curvature tool to help bring dimension into the monkeys
body to create the arms, legs, hands and the rest of the body, this helped the monkey all come together.
From there I used the line tool to create the different parts of the face and tail of the monkey and steam of
the cup.

Objective:

Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together.)

Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
Use Word design features without using any Adobe programs.

Process:

In designing this project, I had multiple ideas of how I could best incorporate this look-a-like model for
a fashion show. I decided that she most closely resembled Lady Gaga and wanted to show case her for a
charity fashion show. I found this picture in a design magazine and scanned it into Photoshop and placed it
into Microsoft Word. I had several sketches of how I would place the image. I used a monochromatic color
scheme. I also kept the black as the background in order to best contrast the red and used different tints of
red in the text. I then started in by placing the image first then added text boxes for the title and body copy
into the image. I used the line tool in order to break each part of the text groupings.

IMAGING
Description:

Personal photo taken that has been edited and formatted using Photoshop, with a design and uplifting
quote.

Programs used:
Adobe Photoshop
Canon SX40 HS

Date:

Course # & Section:

Comm 130 Section 02

Instructor name:
Cory Kerr

Objective:

Learn basic photography skills.

Incorporate a color scheme with image used.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE. Size and crop the
image.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.

Process:

I first started out by taking my picture on Rexburg Campus. I used a Canon SX40 HS camera. I had to find
a good angle to where I could focus in on the house and wait until there was better lighting that wouldnt
cast too many shadows on the house. Once I had the picture, I uploaded it into Photoshop where I used
basic editing tools where I changed the level, saturation, color balance and the sharpen tool within the
photo. Then I designed the layout to be landscape where I inserted my image, text and different shapes
to create a repeating pattern. I also included and incorporated the color scheme title and color swatches
within my design.

MONTAGE
Description:

A spiritual montage made by blending two images and the use of typography.

Programs used:
Photoshop

Date:
10/26/2014

Course # & Section:

Comm 130 Section 02

Instructor name:
Cory Kerr

Objective:

Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks.

Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image.
Apply typography principles

Process:

I started out by deciding what message I wanted to portray. From there I found pictures that were taken
from my wedding. I had a hard time deciding what I would use as my background and which picture
I would mask into that background. Using Adobe Photoshop, I cropped the background image to
11x8.5 inches. I changed the levels of the background picture to bring out more color in the image.
I selected a part of the second image and placed it on the right bottom corner of the background image
in order to create part of the rule of thirds. I painted the hard edges away and the entire image as a
whole using a brush between 30% to 100% Opacity. I blended the hard edges of the second image
to take away the background of that image. Once I had blended it the way I wanted it, I placed the
quote by Elder David A Bednar in the upper left hand corner. For the color of the text color, I used the
eyedropper tool to closely match the color of the brick to match the brush.
