Business Card
Description:

A full bleed, color business card designed for a company

Date:

November 8, 2014

Course/Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 08

Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:

Illustrator and InDesign

Objectives:

- Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.

- Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image without using photos or live trace.
- Use the logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
- Keep designs simple with light watermards and drop shadoes and plenty of white space.

Process:

The logo was created using Adobe Illustrator. I used the pencil tool to create the chopsticks
and the spiral shape for the sushi roll and circle shapes for the center of the sushi. I then used
InDesign to design my business card and stationery page and placed the logo in the document.
I downloaded fonts from Dafont.com to match my logo.

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word

Objectives:

- Comprehend image sizing.

- Find, scan, and import a high-quality image.
- Create a full-bleed design.
- Choose a color scheme and typeface that work for the message and audience.
- Learn to use only Microsoft Word disgn features without using any Adobe programs.

Process:

I scanned the image of the cookie dough from a text book. I then used the image as the base
for my color scheme in the design. I used text boxes and filled them with color to create the
design pattern. I cropped and used a Word image effect to take the bowl of chocolate chips and
sugar to add them at the bottom. I used the shapes tool to create the cookies. I tried to incorporate repetition and rhythm as well as the rule of thirds. The only programs I used to create
this ad was Microsoft Word, Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner, and an online jpg converter.

InDesign

Objectives:

- Apply design principles and use appropriate typography.

- Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.

Process:

I started by creating 4 separate sketches for possible ideas. I then chose my favorite sketch and
created a shape map using Adobe InDesign. Once that was finished, I began inserting the text

principles. I asked my classmates and peers to critique my design, and I used their suggestions
to improve my final outcome.

I found the picture online. I used PhotoShop and started with the picture of the footprints in
the sand. I used the Guassian blur filter to blur the footprints in the upper right corner. I put the
picture of Christ holding the persons hand on top of the beach picture and used the masking
effect to fade the picture around the edges so that the focus was on the hands. I used a quote
that I felt complimented the picture and the message I was trying to convey. I used contrasting
fonts to bring attention to the words I felt were important.
