How to Create Your Own System of Self

Defense
Many styles of martial arts exist, but not all of them are practical for self defense. Those that are
effective have certain techniques that would benefit anyone looking to develop their personal
system of self defense. Here are four effective fighting systems that can take your self defense to
the next level.
S.P.E.A.R. System
The S.P.E.A.R system is a fighting system developed by Tony Blaeur that focuses on using ones
instinctive reflexes (such as flinching) to defend against an aggressor. The system appears to be a
combination of the unbendable arm technique found in Aikido and the Fence technique created
by Geoff Thompson, but taken to the next level. The S.P.E.A.R system focuses on preemptive
techniques that quickly dispatches an attacker before he strikes. It is an effective system in those
situations where you are confronted by someone, but your are not sure if their intention is to yell
at you or punch you in the face.
Favorite techniques: The spear is a great way to cut off an attack and bridge smoothly into your
own fighting techniques. Keeping ones hands up and pointed out like a spear is an effective way
to keep distance between you and your possible aggressor while you access the situation without
leaving yourself open to an attack.
Keysi Fighting Method/ Defence Lab
The Keysi fighting method was a fighting system created by Andy Norman and Justo Dieguez
that mixes Spanish martial arts and other fighting techniques. However, after the split between
the two founders, Andy Norman created Defence Lab, an evolved system based off the Keysi
fighting method. In either case, both systems are know for their close range strikes, double arm
cover over the head and the cultivation of natural instinctive movements for self defense.
Keysi/Defence Lab is also one of the few fighting systems that teaches you how to fight from a
losing position and deal with multiple attackers.
Favorite Techniques: The predominant use of head-butts, hammer punches and elbow strikes are
effective for anyone no matter their size or gender.
Krav Maga
Krav Maga, translated as Contact Combat. is an Israeli self defense system developed by Imi
Lichtenfeld as a as a means of defending the Jewish quarter against fascist groups in Bratislava.
Krav Maga does a great job of training practitioners to focus. understand and use their
surroundings to their advantage. The system is also one of the few that focus on defending agains
multiple attackers, guns, knives and the proverbial kitchen sink!

Favorite techniques: Krav Maga has the most savage groin strikes I have ever seen. If you are
going to take anything from this system, incorporate the groin strikes.
Non-Classical Kungfu
Non-Classical Kungfu (N.C.K.F) is a fighting system developed by Jesse Glover, Bruce Lees
first student. It is a simple, yet effective system that incorporates Wing Chun traditional
techniques, such as trapping and chain punching, closing the gap and eye strikes with
nontraditional techniques such as backhand slaps, and non-telegraphed heavy punches. Like the
S.P.E.A.R method, N.C.K.F also focuses on preemptive attacks.
Favorite Techniques: This system uses effective eye strikes and trapping techniques. The chain
punching is also a great way overwhelm your opponent before landing heavier and more
damaging punches.
When it comes to developing your personal system of self defense, what matters most is
adopting what works best for you. . Using the Razor Fighting Dynamics Scientific Fighting
Method, you should be able to develop and explore these systems taking what is useful and
throwing away what is left.
What are other some of the self defense systems do you incorporate into your personal system.
