Jotun Paints, Flixborough

Jotun Paints is among the world's leaders in the development, manufacture and supply of advanced
protective coatings. Jotun products include high-performance coatings for the marine, offshore and
industrial sectors, together with powder coatings, a range of decorative paints and the 'Steelmaster'
intumescent coatings, for the protection of steelwork against fire.
There are Jotun companies in more that 50 countries worldwide, with production plants in more
than 20, all manufacturing is to ISO quality standard 9002. All Steelmaster products are
manufactured at Jotuns 20 million litres per year production facility based in Flixborough, North
Lincolnshire, England. Jotun is well known for the high quality of technical services with which it
supports its products and its customers. Such services can include project assessment, problem
solving, specification preparation, on-site monitoring and report-back.
The range of Jotun products available and the comprehensiveness of the Jotun services demonstrates that Jotun Paints is well positioned to offer, from a single source - with all its practical
advantages - complete protection for steel structures and concrete surfaces. Protection against fire,
protection against corrosion, and protection for floors.
'Steelmaster' intumescent coatings for fire protection are the main subjects of this brochure.
As a result of its long fight against corrosion for customers in the marine and offshore industries,
Jotun Paints has developed an expertise and range of anti-corrosion coatings that are probably
unique. With this accumulated wisdom available globally throughout the Jotun organisation, anticorrosion systems can be designed and supplied to solve particular problems worldwide.
Regarding floor protection, new coatings with advantages ranging from economy through to
exceptional adhesion and wear resistance, have recently been added to the Jotun range of floor
treatments. Jotun solutions are therefore readily available to provide answers to floor protection
problems throughout the construction industries. Separate information on these products is
available on request.
Protection against fire. Protection against corrosion. Protection for floors.
The Jotun armoury of products for the protection of steelwork and concrete can offer single-source
solutions to many problems otherwise needing the involvement of a number of suppliers.

One-stop supply means better control.

Steelwork needs protection - against fire!

At a temperature of around 550C, steelwork loses its load bearing capacity. Unprotected
steelwork could attain this temperature within minutes of a fire breaking out. However, building
regulations/legislation usually demands some form of fire protection is necessary to upgrade the
fire resistance of the structure - allowing the fire brigade sufficient time to bring the fire under
control. Intumescent coatings are one method of attaining this additional fire protection.

Where to use Steelmaster?

Modern design often involves the steel being expressed as an architectural feature. When
steelwork is exhibited in this manner, intumescent is often the preferred choice of fire protection.

How to specify Steelmaster

Increasing environmental awareness combined with legislative pressures such as EPA (Environmental
Protection Act) and CDM (Construction, Design and Management) regulations place a demanding
burden on the specifier. The Jotun technical team can give advice about and recommend the
Steelmaster products that are most suitable for your project. Factors that need to be considered are
not only the design of the structure but also conditions during application and exposure conditions
after application. The table below gives environment categories and corrosivity grades.

Pictured above, top: Skypark,

(Britains first robot operated car
park) 7000m2 structural steel

Loadings
To calculate the appropriate Steelmaster loading, it is necessary to first determine the period of fire
resistance required. Several further factors need to be considered including:q Shape of the steel and the number of sides exposed
q Whether a steel beam (supporting concrete floor) or supporting column
q Its Hp/A value or Section Factor value (refer to figure 1)
q The choice of Steelmaster product
The appropriate Steelmaster loading can then be calculated from the current Steelmaster
loading tables.
Should you require assistance, please contact Jotun.
Fire Engineering
This service can be offered at the initial design or tender stages of the building. Once the design
load on the steel structure is determined, the collapse temperature of the steel in a fire situation
can be calculated by using BS5950 Part 8 method. From these calculations, reduced film
thicknesses of the Steelmaster coating can be used. This will often show considerable cost savings
in the fire protection package in the building.

How intumescence provides
fire protection
Jotuns Steelmaster fire resistant
coatings appear identical to
conventional paint finishes. However
in a fire they swell to become a
meringue-like substance which
provides vital insulation for the
structural steelwork.
The degree of fire protection needed
is normally defined by building
regulations and the thickness of the
coating is specified to satisfy those
requirements.

Why Specify Steelmaster

q

Jotun is a global player who can offer a "one stop" range of fire and corrosion protection
products and services.

Steelmaster solvent based products are suitable for both on site and innovative offsite
application.

Where Steelmaster products are specified, Jotun offer a free of charge "spot" check service
designed to assist the applicators to achieve a satisfactory specified standard.

This does not in anyway imply liability or absolve the contractor from their
contractual obligations.

Jotun offer a Fire Integrity Certification Scheme which means that you will receive a quality
control service at each stage of the project, from concept to completion, ensuring that the
services offered culminate in the issue of a Certificate of Fire Safety Integrity. This service will
involve a fee to be agreed prior to project commencement. Jotun believe that this
Certification Scheme is unique in its comprehensiveness.

Jotun offer a designated Intumescent Paint School for both specifiers and contractors which
can be held in house or at our premises.
