Questions and answers about obtaining a security service worker license

My security service license has expired. What do I do now?

You must submit an application for a new security guard license. If your application is
submitted on or after June 1, 2011, you must also complete the new mandatory Alberta
Basic Security Training course before you can be issued a new license. A list of where you
can access this training can be found at:
www.solgps.alberta.ca/programs_and_services/public_security/private_security_programs/
Pages/TrainingandTesting.aspx.
What are the training requirements for security service workers?
Effective June 1, 2011 a security service worker must meet the following training
requirements before being able to get a license:

equivalent course approved or accredited by Solicitor General and Public Security; and
A score of 80 per cent or better on the provincial security service examination.

Which security service occupations require Alberta Basic Security training?
This course must be taken before a license can be issued for anyone wanting to work as a
security guard, bodyguard, loss prevention worker, patrol dog handler and a security alarm
responder.
I am a former police officer. Do I need to take the Alberta Basic Security training
course?
No. As a former police officer, you will have already received training and work experience
that either meets or exceeds the new standards.
Why is there this new training requirement?
The need for this training stems from the realization that security services workers must
possess the appropriate people and investigative skills, training, and/or experience to safely
and properly perform security work. The training also assures Albertans that security
personnel have the level of skill to perform their work well.
How long does it take to receive a security service license?
The average time to process an application is about six to eight weeks, but this may vary
depending on the volume of applications being processed at any given time.

How recent does my criminal background check have to be to get a security service
license?
The criminal background check must be submitted to the Solicitor Genera and Public
Security licensing department within 90 days of the time you receive the record check from
police. Any later, and you will need to get a new criminal record check.
I have a security license from another jurisdiction. Is it valid in Alberta?
No. However, be sure to include any training you have in your new security license
application. It will help us determine whether or not you need to take the Alberta Basic
Security training course before we issue you an Alberta security license.
