Past perfect
The past perfect is formed with had + past participle.
In many ways it is simply the past equivalent of the present perfect.
I had just seen Mary. (not long before a specific time in the past)
They hadn 't been to school that week. (for a period of time up to and including a specific time in the past)
He had been in prison. (it was one of his life experiences)
It is used in narratives to indicate which event happened first.
