part

no.

230-365-001-101 (MAI P/N 44540-1) to 230-365-001-103 (MAI P/N 44540-2).

Background:

Meggitt Airdynamics Inc. (formerly Howden Airdynamics, Inc) has improved part
no. 44540-1 blower assembly. The newly improved blower part no. is 44540-2.
Improvements were performed to enhance blower overload capability upon Bell
Helicopters request.

The oil cooler blower contains a torque overload shear section in the drive shaft. The
shear section was increased to provide higher overload torque capability. Possibility
of drive shaft shearing in normal operation is reduced with this improvement.

Blower air flow performance, form, fit, and function are not affected by the
enhancement. Fan input requirements are not affected.

Upgradeability:

Existing 44540-1 blowers are capable of being upgraded to 44540-2 assemblies in

lieu of purchasing new blowers. Upgrade of existing units does not alter performance
characteristics, input requirements, or mounting configuration. Blower upgrade is
accomplished by installing repair kit part no. 44584-1 in accordance with overhaul
manual instructions. Upgrade may be performed at MAI or in the field.

Recommendation:

Replacing the existing 44540-1 blower is not mandatory, but is recommended to

enhance overload torque capability. Replacement can be accomplished by upgrading
existing 44540-1 units or by installing new 44540-2 units.

MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS
The Fan Assembly requires only one maintenance action, which is replacement of the
sealed shaft bearings after 3000 hours of flight operation. See Section 5.0 for instructions
on removal and replacement of bearings.

4.0

IN-SERVICE INSPECTION
The Fan Assembly is considered "on-condition", except for the bearing replacement
outlined in para 5.0. The Fan Assembly should be visually inspected every 100 hours of
operation for obvious damage, failed shear section in drive shaft, excessive vibration, or
unusual noises.

During the 3000 hour refurbishment, the impeller and drive shaft shall be thoroughly
inspected for the following:

Impeller
Any indication of damage due to foreign objects being ingested into the Fan Assembly.
Any visible indications of cracks.
Erosion of blade tips which exceeds 50% of blade surface.
Excessive visible erosion of the impeller's leading or trailing edges.

Drive Shaft
Inspect for cracks or impending failure using magnetic particle inspection.

The replacement of the impeller assembly requires performance testing and is considered a
supplier repair, therefore, the assembly should be returned to MAI for repair/replacement
and retesting.

Replacement of drive shaft requires reshimming of adapter to maintain a controlled

distance to inlet shroud.

BEARING REPLACEMENT
(Refer to Appendix A for Illustrated Parts Breakdown)

5.1

Disassembly and Bearing Removal

a) Restrict adapter (Item 12) from rotating using tool T10550, while loosening nut (Item
22). Remove nut and washer (Item 21), allowing adapter and shims (Items 26-28) to
slip off end of the drive (quill) shaft.
b) Remove the internal retaining ring (Item 15) with standard snap ring pliers. Drive shaft
(quill shaft, Item 11 or 34) and bearing assembly will now slide forward and can be
removed. Discard bearing (Item 14, QTY 1).
c) Remove four (4) screws (Item 24), and separate inlet housing (Item 1) from fan
housing.
d) Restrict impeller from rotating by inserting a wooden dowel between impeller blades
and housing vanes and loosen nut (Item 19). Remove nut, washer (Item 18), and
spacer (Item 5). Impeller/shaft assembly can now be removed by sliding assembly out
of the main bearings.
e) Remove and discard lockwire (reference Item 31) from either end of housing. Remove
screws (Items 23 & 17), retainers (Items 10 & 8), and slide bearings (Item 14, QTY 2)

PERFORMANCE VERIFICATION
Install the Fan Assembly on a test stand capable of providing 10 Hp at 9545 RPM.
Support the housing at the mounting flange with an aluminum adapter during testing.
Rotate the fan by hand CCW viewed from inlet to determine if there is any interference
with the housing or excessive bearing drag or noise. Slowly accelerate the fan to 9000
500 RPM (less than 5,000 RPM/min). Fast acceleration will fail the shear section. Assure
there is no abnormal audible noise (grinding) or vibration (oscillations). Operate for 3
minutes.

SCOPE
This specification covers the general requirements for installing and handling ball bearings
used in P/N 44540-1 and 44540-2 vaneaxial blowers.

2.0

HANDLING

2.1

Cleanliness
Small amounts of contamination can ruin bearings quickly, so precautions must be taken to
keep bearings clean during the manufacturing processes.

2.1.1

Containers
Bearings should be left in the protective containers or wrapping as long as possible. Do
not store unwrapped bearings in work or stockroom areas.

2.1.2

Work Area
Work benches and other areas used for installing bearings should be cleaned just before
beginning to install bearings. Remove "dust makers" such as shop cloths, dusty papers,
etc. Do not use air blowers near work areas when bearings are being installed, use only
"lint free" wipers.

2.2

Using Force
Always use extreme caution when applying force to get a bearing into or out of an
assembly. Always apply force to the race being assembled; that is, push on the inner race
to place bearing on a shaft and push on the outer race to place bearing in a bearing bore.
NEVER HIT, POUND, HAMMER, or otherwise shock a bearing with force applied across
the ball train. This will dent the balls and races and ruin the bearing. If force must be
applied across the ball train during assembly, it must not exceed a light hand push. When
mechanical force across the ball train, such as a bearing puller or arbor press, must be used
to disassemble a bearing, the bearing so affected shall be discarded. Discarded bearings
shall be marked and handled in a manner to ensure that they will not be re-used in
assemblies.

Anti-Fret

2.3.1

Material

DOCUMENT:
REVISION:

PAGE:

R-92-81
A
2004/03/08
B-2

Use MIL-G-81322 (Item 33, Mobil 28) grease as an anti-fret lubricant.

2.3.2

Application
Wipe a thin film of Mobil 28 grease onto the surface of the housing bore before installing
bearings. Use this on all greased bearings at the time of assembly.

2.3.3

Looseness
If installed bearings seem unusually loose in bores or on shafts, check bearing and part
dimensions.

2.4

Orientation
Always refer to the assembly print for proper installation. Some bearings have preferential
direction and will fail if installed backwards.

2.4.1

Identification
Unless otherwise designated on the assembly drawing, all ball bearings shall be installed
with the manufacturers identification markings facing toward the shoulder of the shaft.
