Handling precautions

Connection to battery

Power
The power source is 12V DC (Direct Current). Use a battery with
nominal voltage of between 12V and 14.4V.
Unspecified power source (such as AC 100-240V for household or 24V
DC available on board the vessel) cannot be used.
DO NOT ever use a battery charger.
When using a power source fixed to the boat, ensure voltage is DC
between 12V and 14.4V. (When using the boats batteries, do not
connect directly to a 12V source. Instead, use a DC-DC converter to
change from 24V to 12V. If battery terminals are rusted this may
affect the reels performance. Always remove rust before use.

Caution: When many electrical reels are being simultaneously powered from the boats power source, there is
a risk of damage to the retrieval action.
Use only fully charged batteries.
After fishing, protect battery life by charging before storing. Before your next trip, charge again for optimum
performance.
Charging capacity may deteriorate if used only for short spells. In that case, replace battery only.

Cord
For connecting to battery, always use genuine Shimano cord. Failure to do so may mean the reel not performing
as expected. Never misuse power cord. If you step on it, fold it, or bend it, damage may occur.

* For explanation purpose, the direction of

connector recess is facing the opposite side.

Various techniques (Introduction: A must read if you want to improve your catch significantly)

For a fast drop.

Application 1

How to cancel the automatic casting function

The automatic casting function will be enabled
when you connect to a power source. If you want
to cancel this due to ring resistance or backlash,
follow the procedure below.

Normally, by tightening the spool control knob,

free-spinning becomes a bit sluggish. Depending on
vessels up-down movement, backlash can be
prevented.

1. With the motor stopped, and in standard

mode, press the menu button twice.
Casting [] begins to blink.

However, to drop the hook faster use your finger

instead of the spool control knob.

2. If you press the Enter button, the

light
turns OFF. (canceling casting)
To re-enable the function, repeat the process.

The following methods can also be used.

Try the DENDOU-MARU 4000HP-As automatic
casting function. When lowering the hook 5m or
more past the position of the tip ring, the motor
automatically starts. As a reaction, the spool will
turn in the direction at which the line comes out.
When you return the clutch, the motor will stop
automatically.

For detailed instructions on how to use the menu

button, refer to page 4 Operating the menu
button.

1 Blinking

If you disengage the clutch, turn the technical lever

to ON and start the motor. Forced casting is thus
enabled, allowing the hook to drop faster.
Caution: When performing forced casting, turning
the clutch ON without turning the motor OFF will
tangle the line. Be sure to turn the motor OFF (turn
the technical lever OFF) before engaging the clutch.

Zero-setting (Always do this before you start fishing)

To reach the ideal fishing depth exactly.

18

To improve results, it is essential to get to the rack (the ideal fishing depth) exactly. To do that, select zero-setting. This means setting 0Meter when the hook is on the waters surface.
The rack depth can be now be reached with precision as the rack position depth is displayed.

Bearings

Stops at the gunnel automatically

Bringing you even smoother

spool movement.

A corrosion-resistant metal is densely packed onto the surface of

both ends of the spool using surface reforming technique. This
creates a stable immoveable layer that ensures constant
protection.
Due to highly rust-resistant bearings (A-RB) inside the unit,
lowering the hook has become even easier.
Thats why even simple float fishing, said to be troublesome with
an electronic reel, can be conquered.
We have also achieved the ideal balance between the safety bar
and the level wind, to completely avoid notorious and unwanted
line tangles at this crucial point.

A-RB (Anti-Rust Bearings)

Gunnel stop

After motorised up-winding has stopped,

when the rod is assembled the hook will
automatically stop in front of you.

* When connected to a power source for the first time only, the gunnel stop is at
6m. From the next occasion onwards, the gunnel stopping position becomes that
at which the line stopped for 5 seconds or more. This is automatically remembered
by the computer. (This function only occurs within the range of 1m to 6m. When
the depth is negative, set to 1m for safety reasons.)
One Point Advice
When fishing with a short rod from the bow of the boat, where the floor level is higher, setting
the water level at 0 would mean the 1 6m range requirement of the gunnel stopping function
would not be met. In this case, bring the hook to the tip of the rod and press 0-set at this
position. The hook will now come back into your reach. In this situation, the 0-setting is not at
the level of the water surface, so the distance given from the tip of the rod to the water surface
will not be accurate.

When the hook reaches the memorized depth the memory alarm notifies you.

Beep

24

Beep

When lowering the hook, the alarm rings 4m before the hook reaches set
memory depth then every 2m thereafter.

Beep beep

At the memorized depth (in this case 100m) the alarm makes two short
beeps.
The alarm rings only once per cast/retrieval. If the hook is reeled in once to within
6.0m, or 0-set is pressed, the alarm will again inform you of memorized depth.

Two-way handling of rack: from top and bottom

Top-down
Bottom-up

For convenience,
You can choose from top or bottom

To improve catches, you must drop the hook to the exact point where most fish are (the rack).
The latest high-performance fish group sensor can detect exact depth in which fish are lying.
Normally, the vessel captain will advise the position of this rack. In this case, depending on fishing
area, method and the catch expected, the rack can be indicated from the water surface or from the
bottom (ocean floor).
The NEW DENDOU-MARU 4000HP-A has both the convenient top-down mode to indicate from
water surface, or the equally convenient bottom-up mode to indicate from the bottom. Alternate
these modes to suit your own requirements.

Mode Switching ...

When the power is connected it turns to top-down
mode. To change mode, do the following.
1. With the motor stopped, and in standard
mode, press the menu button once.
bottom [] begins to blink.
2. Press the Enter button to light up the
mark, and change to bottom-up mode.
To return to top-down mode, repeat the process.
For detailed instructions on how to use the menu
button, refer to page 4 Operating the menu

RakuRaku Mode
RakuRaku
mode

What is this?

RakuRaku mode is the function which attempts to consistently maintain the tension you
have specified. The reel senses the tension (load) in the line and retrieves the line
automatically, adjusting speed of rotation in response to the pull of the fish.

In other words,
This feature avoids instantaneous
high-tension tug-of-wars between
motor and fish.

It is particularly useful when the waves

are big and you cannot maintain
steady tension with the rod.

When tension suddenly increases due

to the fish rushing away or the boat
suddenly lifting, the motor speed
slows to adjust.

When tension decreases due to lowering

of the rod during pumping, or the boat
dipping in the swell, the motor speeds
up in response to avoid slack line.

This makes it easier but feels just like hand-reeling,

giving you peace of mind.

28

And it also has these advantages ...

If the momentary tug-of-wars between the motor
and fish stop, RakuRaku return the reel to the
original setting.
(Try testing which is stronger, jerking the main line
once, or gradually pulling on it.)
When doing so, please wear gloves and
be careful not to injure yourself.

How to set RakuRaku mode

The line retrieval settings can be set to 30 different levels. The technical lever setting is
displayed on the counter. (Diagram to the right)
Settings 1 to 4 enable a slow, consistent mode, perfect for when you want to entice
fish to bite.
Settings 5 to 30 are RakuRaku mode, ideal for fighting with fish.

Usage Instructions / Safety features

DENDOU-MARU is built with precision components, so please pay attention to the
following when handling it. And after your fishing trip, always take care of it to ensure
long life use.

Taking care of the reel

1. Remove dirt with a sponge and tap water.
* Do not immerse in water to wash.
2. Pour some water over it to remove dirt.
Hose down between spool and unit,
then disengage clutch and pull out 23m of line. (Refer to drawing on the
right). Salt deposits which can sticks to
spool bearings will be removed.
3. Dry it thoroughly.
* Precautions
Anti-rust ball bearings (A-RB) used in your reel are designed to be corrosion
resistant for use in high salinity environments. They do not protect against seizing
due to salt build-up.
* Bearing seizure due to salt build-up
Failure to perform regular care and maintenance as advised above can result in a
build-up of salt residue inside ball bearings which, when dry, can cause them to
seize. Though not the result of rust, symptoms such as rolling or grinding sounds
are a warning. Once the salt has dried it is almost impossible to wipe away. Even
with A-RB bearings, the only complete fix for the problem is to replace with new
ones. You have been warned!

30

Taking care of the reel

(When the rotational performance of the spool has worsened)
When the spools rotation action does not feel smooth despite performing
normal care and maintenance, this indicates the bearings on the handle-side
reel have accumulated salt.
1. Immerse the reels handle-side in water
up to the space between spool and main
body. (refer to the diagram on the right.
Do not immerse the whole reel in water)
Rotate the spool to remove the salt
amongst the bearings. The action should
become smoother.

Immerse
up to here

2. Raise the reel and let the water drain,

keeping the handle side facing upwards until all drips cease.

Precautions for Use

If the line becomes snagged while fishing, do not try to forcibly free it using the
rod or reel. Instead protect your hands with a towel or glove then pull in the line,
leaving as little as possible behind.
Handle the reel carefully. When shifting position, especially when packing away,
take care not to cause damage due to friction.
Do not drop or bump the reel against solid objects.
When short of space on board, do not subject the back side of the reel and power
cord to shock. Never fold or bend the cord, especially when between the reel and
gunnel.
When wearing certain type of polarizing sunglasses, the counter LCD screen may
not always be clear.

If only the backlight is lit and the liquid crystal screen has no display, despite
power connected via the electric cord, disconnect the power cord connector or
the alligator clip. Reattach it and the screen should appear.
CAUTION:
Whilst the components in this product are designed to function properly at
temperatures between -10C & +50C, failure at temperatures below 0C could
occur if water inside the reel freezes. To prevent this, please keep the reel as dry
as possible in freezing conditions.

How to maintain
To prevent rust on the connector, cover it up when not in use with the cap
supplied.
Do not dismantle the reel. Inside are motor, breaker and other electrical
components which are easily damaged.
Do not apply oil to the drag area.
Long term storage in high temperature and high humidity may cause the lines
shape to change and strength to deteriorate. Always seek a location with good
ventilation.
The reel unit, especially the counter, should not be
immersed in water. (The counter is water-proof
under normal specification, but to avoid trouble do
not immerse).
The reel you have is built for long service, with special maintenance grease made
for that purpose. Apply this through the six holes of power cord terminal as
shown in the drawing. Application on the reels main body side is most effective.

Safety features
Self-recovering breaker
If the motor becomes overloaded, the breaker will cut
in to protect it. When this occurs, all indicators will
blink as shown on the right.
* Caution: If this occurs, for the protection of the motor, let it rest for at least 5
minutes without turning the motor switch ON or OFF. If this occurs, even if you
wind line in via the handle or disengage the clutch, retrieval learning will be
preserved and the counter will work normally once you resume motor operation.
When the blinking light turns to a constant light, the breaker has returned to
working order.
Battery detection indicator
If the battery voltage falls below 10.5V, or the contact
between the cord and the connector becomes poor,
the battery pictograph will light up.
* If the following
displays appear, do not let the line in or out.
Retrieval learning will become inaccurate.
If the voltage is too high
If the voltage becomes higher than DC 20V the
screen shown in the diagram to the right will appear.

LCD totally black,

all characters appear.

When exposed to high temperature environment (i.e. car boots), this may happen.
Reduced the temperature and it will return to normal.

The LCD display doesnt appear

Check if battery, power cords (+) and (--) terminals are connected properly.
Also check for sufficient battery capacity.

The LCD display doesnt appear

(When using in extreme cold)

A characteristic of LCD screens is that if left in temperatures below --15 C, even if you connect to power, it wont turn
on for a short period.
(Once the power has been turned on, the display only appears once the board inside the counter has warmed up.)
When using in extreme cold, we recommend you either store the reel in the cabin or fit the cover and protect it until
you reach the fishing spot.

Line winding learning is not set.

Its a bit troublesome, but return to learning and check.

P.7-13

Even if line has been delivered,

the counter does not move.

Again, return to learning, and check.

P.7-13

The error is large.

Return to learning, and check.

P.7-13

The counter display and line water

depth colour do not match.

Depending on type of line, there can be some difference.

Also, due to line stretch during use it may not match counter display.

The gunnel stop position is different.

It may be caused by up-winding tension and line stretch. Do zero-setting on the surface.
And for the set that can memorize gunnel, the range is 1-6m.
Sets that has 0-1m setting range should be set at 1m for safety reason.

P.6

There is display on LCD,

but motor does not work.

Motor stops in midst of up-winding.

Check battery capacity is sufficient.

* If it works when motor speed is low, but not when high, this may be due to battery capacity. Check again after
battery re-charge. If it still doesnt work, battery is probably too old. Use new battery and check again.
Motor stop functioning in sub-zero temperatures.
When using in extreme cold, we recommend you either store the electric reel in the cabin or leave power on until you
reach the fishing spot.
Check screw and/or power connector are properly tightened.
The terminals of vessel power source and reel/power cord connector may be rusted, causing poor connection.
Check again after removing the rust.
