to
provide
comprehensive
English

instruction for non-native English speakers in a

assist students in achieving language proficiency
goals for academic, professional, and social
purposes through multi-level language instruction.
The Center for ESL is dedicated to promoting
diversity and to providing reciprocal cultural
enrichment opportunities to the University, the

o Newport on the Levee. The following day, a group of the

Ecuadorian students ventured to Newport on the Levee in

Newport, Kentucky. Visiting the home of the Newport Aquarium,
several famous bars and restaurants, and views of Cincinnatis

the culture of Lexingtons neighboring big city.

The following four poems were written by the Ecuadorian students for a class
assignment in Hema Ramachandrans course, they wrote about their heritage

using the original poem Where Im From by George Ella Lyons as a template.
The resulting poems are thoughtful and inspiring. Because of time and space, we
were not able to include all of them in the last newsletter, but have been able to
submit the rest that were sent to us in this newsletter. They are all thoughtful
and meaningful works of poetry. Thank you to everyone who contributed their
poetry and thank you to Hema for facilitating the opportunity to share their
beautiful work.

Where Im From
By Caroll Posada
I am from coffee, from Dolca, and bananas.
I am from the kindness, friendship, and smiling.
I am from sugar, orchids, and cinnamon.
I am from remoteness, screaming, from Jose, Eugenia, Mara and Badar.
I am from living away and independent life.
From why father doesnt live with us, and why I dont have a joined family.
I am from only one God that can do it all, I am from Islam, from Prophet Mohammed,
and praying five times.
I am from Colombia, coffee, and rice.
From the mother that abandoned by her husband supported us, and taught us the
Worth of honesty and humility, the father that never lived with us, that brothers that
live and are spread across the world.
I am from the bedside table, and bookshelves, that always made that my mom cry and
feel depressed.

The WHERE IM FROM Temple

By Carmen Tadeo
I am from Teflon, from pots and pans
I am from the mud houses, small but nice and full of love,
where the laughter and birdsongs almost never stop
I am from the avocado tree which unique flavor gives more sense to our meals
I am from the weekends meetings of the complete family at my parents house
From black faces, from Gilberto and Hermencia and Rosa Mara
I am from the strong character and cheerful spirits,
from elders respect and help to the needy
I am from the Catholic Church, the infinite Gods love and his three Gods in one
I am from La Concepcin, from Africa, the yucca and beans
from my widow grandmothers who after their husbands death
had more children without marrying again, but they could raise all of them
from the hard and difficult farmers life of my parents and the teaching careers of all
my siblings and I
I am from the several family pictures on the walls of my living room, the TV family
time in my parents bedroom, my mothers CD recording with her own songs, my
nieces and nephews toys scattered on the floor.

Hello from the July Editor

Taking over the newsletter for the month of
the July, I wanted to say hello and take a few lines to
introduce myself to the readers. I have had
the privilege of working with each of the
GoTeacher Cohorts since the program began
in January 2013, making me the longest
lasting GoTeacher program assistant.
Alongside of working with the Center for
ESL at the University of Kentucky, I have
been studying for and recently graduated
with a Masters of Arts in Linguistics. Next, I
will start a PhD program in the nations
capital, Washington D.C., at Georgetown
University this Fall. While exciting, this
means my time in Lexington, at the
University of Kentucky, and working with
the ESL programs will come to an end when
the Ecuadarian students depart in August.
With my duties ranging from stocking
apartments with food to driving large vans
around the state, I have enjoyed working
with my fellow program assistants, my boss
(Jason!), and sharing the sites and wonders
of my home state with the Ecuadorian students.
